Months of Meryl: THE RIVER WILD

"Great post and comments. Yes, Streep had to navigate the rough waters of being in her 40's! I do think she smashed through the glass ceiling for women since she persevered and then became an even bigger star in her 50's." - Sister Rona

"One of my favourite movies from my teen years - I'm shocked at how long ago this was released. It was Meryl that sold this movie for me and is the reason I saw it. At the time, and I still feel this way, she is the reason to watch and believe this film." -Filmboymichael

campaign for her Honorary Oscar!

I used to holiday in Bantry, Co Cork from time to time. She was living in Glengarrif (the next harbor over) and could be seen from time to time doing her shopping in Bantry or hanging at the hardware store where she was friends with the owner. She was always so sweet to everyone.

She with the freckles in her temper! That red hair is no lie. Love Maureen so much. I'd also love to see an Honorary Oscar happen for her.

tom & tb -- we've tried here! But we also know how AMPAS is for Honorarys. Only the men or the women who already have Oscars most of the time, you know?

At least they managed to shell one out for Angela Lansbury. I thought that might never happen. How nice would it be if that wasn't a fluke, and they started honoring women every year?

For other Maureen lovers, I highly recommend listening to the commentary she does on The Quiet Man DVD. She's as spry and candid talking about the movies as she was in the movies. Great stories.

Poor Maureen, I think the problem with the academy and her cinematic reputation is that she was seen as a very reliable support for the male leading movie star. She was hot, she was funny, she was also not likely to overshadow John Wayne or Tyrone Power or Jimmy Stewart or...

Being the hot wife is usually never enough for the Academy, but The Quiet Man and The Parent Trap is enough for me to love her forever!

As editor and designer of Maureen's website and Facebook page, "Maureen O'Hara Magazine" as well as her archivist for over 20 years, I always look forward to St. Patrick's Day. I talked with Maureen this afternoon and she sends her best wishes to all for a "Happy, Happy St. Patrick's Day"
