Open Thread. What did I miss?

THE LEFTOVERS just gets better and better. how phenomenal is Ann Dowd any way?It occurred to me yesterday while making an exceedingly poor attempt to fully recuperate from TIFF madness (I should have been resting my strained eyeballs but instead I was emptying the DVR) that I had missed two whole weeks of regular news. I joked about this on twitter but I'm 150% sure that I missed something I'd actually like to have known about!

It's easy to miss things, even if you're fully immersed in the industry. (An example: I was talking to Felicity Jones at that Theory of Everything party about her scenes with Charlie Cox, who is so sweetly crush-worthy in the movie, and she somehow hadn't heard that he was the new Daredevil for Netflix!)

What movie things, besides TIFF and the standard Oscar buzz, have been on your mind these past couple of weeks?

Catch me back up. Fill me in.

I spent a good 10-12 minutes of would-be billable hours staring at the Ursula gif currently headlining your comment du jour section.

Finally watched Fault in Our Stars. Liked Ansel Elgort more than I thought I would; liked Shailene less (she's a lovely young woman, but not sure she has "it" in either range or star magnetism; her performances in all of her recent films seem VERY similar.) Did enjoy Laura Dern as the mom, but mostly because I liked seeing her in a movie again.

Annoyed with the movies showing at the theaters nearby, but too lazy to drive to see anything better. And I hate the Sunday NYTimes last week for going over the entire new movie and theater schedule, knowing that I'll probably not get to see anything anytime soon! Super jealous of all the cool kids in NY and LA.

Starting watching a Danish TV show on Netflix called Rita with Mille Dinesen. Enjoying it quite a bit. That's all.

Can juli Moore really pull off an Oscar win?

I'm really happy that The Skeleton Twins is killing it in limited release; the writer/director is a friend and this success couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

What movie things, besides TIFF and the standard Oscar buzz, have been on your mind these past couple of weeks?

André Benjamin as Jimi Hendrix.
The contemporary charms of Keira Knightley.
Viola Davis.
Joan Rivers' funeral.

To everyone. Go watch "The Leftovers" right now! Incredible acting all around. Tony nominee Carrie Coon is phenomenal. She will play Ben Affleck´s sister in "Gone Girl" as well. Her first movie role. Very very excited about that. Especially the women on this show are very complex. Ann Dowd and Amy Brenneman are mind blowing.
And there is some beautiful music by fellow german Max Richter.

If this was reported on the blog I missed it, but Lily Tomlin and Tom Hanks (as well as Sting, Al Green, and Patricia McBride) were chosen as this year's Kennedy Center honorees.

Also, George Clooney won the DeMille.

And the Gossip rags are soiling their collective panties on where/when George will tie the knot.

I just found out that Parker Posey will be in the next Woody Allen film. (Am I the only one who hadn't picked up on this yet?) Parker fucking Posey. Love love love her. Damn, why isn't she cast in more things?!

Also, after looking at cast pictures from the next season of American Horror Story, I was thinking how a fantastic feature film could be made if they took the entire new season and edited it down into 2 hours or so. I mean look at that incredible cast of actresses! I would PAY to go see a movie version of Freak Show!

George Clooney for the Cecil B. DeMille? Wow, the Globes will really do anything to starf*ck around. Incredible. For a sort of lifetime achievement award. Fantastic. Jodie Foster I could understand, she almost never appears on screen nowadays, it's a semi-retirement. But Clooney is still going at it... No sense at all.
