And Your Golden Globe Host Is... Ricky Gervais

Hi everyone. Coco here, wondering how you guys feel about this year's Golden Globe host announcement.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association made the announcement yesterday on Twitter: Ricky Gervais will return to host the Golden Globes for a fourth time.

Gervais is back after a three year hiatus. Those three years, of course, are what we common folk refer to as the "Tina and Amy Era". And with good reason. Sure, their third time hosting was a relative letdown compared to the first two glorious times, but ask anyone on the street and they'll agree Tina and Amy are still among the best Award Show hosts of the past ten years or so. But let's go back to Ricky.

Gervais has an interesting history with the Globes. He was the first person to host the ceremony since 1995 (when John Larroquette and Janine Turner shared the honors), and he made headlines thanks to his unsavory jokes. Every entertainment outlet seemd to be talking about how Gervais poked fun at Robert Downey Jr. and Mel Gibson's histories of substance abuse, and for a while there, people tuned in to the Globes to see what inaproppriate thing Gervais was going to say next, instead of tuning in for the right reasons (which, by the way, are the fashion and the opportunity to see drunk celebrities interact with each other).

But just like anything that coasts on shock value, Gervais's popularity could only last for so long. By the time Gervais hosted for the third time, his schtick was old news.

But what do you think? Is Gervais's comeback a boring choice? Or are you actually excited about his return?

Gervais was so bad, I can't imagine the rationale for bringing him back. A truly uninspired choice.

Now seems as good a time as any to remind people that you do not need to watch the Golden Globes. They are not the Oscars. They are not awarded by critics or peers. You'll see a lot of the same speeches at the Oscars anyway. You'll see all the dresses here...

I don't understand who is making these decisions. Chris Rock was unfunny at the last Oscars, so why not bring him back? Gervais was unfunny at the last Globes, so why not bring him back?

The reality is that the Globes don't need a host-they just need a good bartender to be entertaining.

Inexplicable choice, and one that just makes everyone groan at the thought.
If they are this bad at picking a host, maybe Oscar prognosticators shouldn't give the GG's as much weight as they do...

Ricky Gervais has gotten a little too self-congratulatory for my tastes. Couldn't they find a fresher host than Gervais?

I like Ricky and Rock. And I believe they'll be a highlight above the potential slate of nominees and winners for both shows.

Oh for fuck's sake. Ricky Gervais again? It should have gone to Amy Schumer easily. Hope she said no to these clowns.

Why is no one considering Amy Schumer ?

October 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Ugh. The thing is, he CAN be funny, but he's so in love with his "naughtiness," which we know by his constant giggling at his own jokes, that he's become fairly intolerable.

I wouldn't be surprised if Schumer hosts the Critics Choice Awards. I don't think that either the HFPA or the Academy are quite in a Amy Schumer place just yet.

Everyone: If they wanted to give it to someone British, why not give Pegg and Frost a shot? That at least might be a little more interesting and, if they do well enough, maybe the Academy's show producers take note and work to give them the big show.

Yes!

I will say in defense of Chris Rock: Jon Stewart and Ellen DeGeneres both improved considerably on their second time hosting, so maybe Rock will be good.

Amy Schumer would be so much worse than Ricky Gervais. She is not funny. Her SNL hosting gig was TERRIBLE. To be fair SNL is also terrible, but it's saying something when the host is worse

I'm sure the globes wanted Schumer, but it's not like she ain't busy. She'll be there and will present, no doubt. Gervais is a bit boring, but oh well whatever why do they even need a host?

I think it was Robert Downey Jr who referred to Gervais's last Globes as "mean spirited" and I agreed.
I think awards shows should honor nominees not mock them. But I also think celebrity roasts should only be done in private by fully informed, consenting comedians.

Gervais never did anything for me exempt vaguely bore me. He seems to have all the fun.

October 27, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

@Vaus This was the same Downey Jr who then proceeded to leer over the actress nominees, and saying how he'd like to bone them all...

October 28, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJ

Amy Schumer is juvenile humor, I'm still not sure why anyone finds her funny.

They should just keep bringing back Tina & Amy till we're bored of them, or maybe Kristen Wiig & Maya Rudolph?

Anyways, I don't mind Gervais, I like that he's obviously willing to take stinging shots at celebs, which some of them don't like.

This is the best news!!! I saw the highlights of his hosting duties yesterday and I cannot wait for the horror and silence around the audience. God bless De Niro for laughing along with those who safely laugh at home where no one can judge them.

Truthfully Ricky stole the show last year just presenting Best Comedy actress - it was funnier than everythiing Tina and Amy did

October 28, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersati

i don't think anyone can top Tina & Amy but Ricky Gervais is not NEARLY as bad as everyone on here is griping about. His shots at The Tourist getting three golden globe nominations is one of my favorite awards show moments. He knows when to call out Hollywood's bullshit...and frankly I think we can thank him for The Globes' much more respectable nominees in the past few years after he called them out on their starfucking (seriously, we've had more Greta Gerwig/Frances Ha worthiness and less Alice in Wonderland and Burlesque for best picture atrocities).

October 28, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

I like him.. It doesn't matter if he's shock value or not shock value because he's good
