Yes, No, Maybe So : The Huntsman Winters War
Here's Murtada deconstructing the trailer for the ridiculously titled The Huntsman Winters War.
YES
- The actresses of course. Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, Charlize Theron = a formidable trio.
- Chastain as a the Warrior. Yes!
- Blunt and Theron as dueling evil sisters. Yes again! May campiness rule the day.
- The oversize gestures of Blunt and Theron as they wreak havoc. Give me more!
- So it’s obviously all about the actresses. Oh and the possibility of a shirtless Chris Hemsworth.
NO
- From the producer of Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland….. NOOOOOOO.
- Hemsworth gets top billing?? I guess he's The Hunstman.
- The CGI doesn't look very convincing.
- “Men have forgotten what it means to be afraid. We will bring fear”. Hmmm cheesy line. It could be fun if the tone is over the top campy. The trailer is playing it straight so we are dubious.
MAYBE SO
- Does Blunt’s ice crown look odd above her face? It certainly is not as fierce as Theron’s crown. Is Colleen Atwood showing favorites?
- No enough Shirtless Chris. Will it be just the one scene like in Thor?
- Chastain is almost mute in the trailer. Only one line. More Warrior Jessica!
- Will we get enough of the British supporting cast of Nick Frost, Rob Brydon and Alexandra Roach as supposedly the dwarfs. They are hardly in the trailer.
It's a maybe so despite the fabulous trio of actresses. What’s your verdict?

Yeah, same. I wish a movie with Blunt, Chastain and Theron were GANGBUSTERS, but I'm not seeing it based on this trailer. A bit too hammy to compete with LotR, but too cold and normal to compete with Warcraft.
Looks awful.
This made me giddy in a today's version of "The Witches of Eastwick" kind of way. I can't really think of many movies that has such a wonderful triumvirate of actresses lately. Can I suggest a blog on that?
it would've been repetitious to once again cast Cate Blanchett in a role that would've stolen the movie away from the rest of the cast.
I'm glad Jessica is not doing a camp character as I have mixed feeling about her Crimson Peak role.
Theron is not experimenting enough with her face or her face simply doesn't have that innate flexibility, I guess that's why we need the Cate/Close/Streep trio to save the day.
Blunt's character is probably going to be the most complex of them them all; here's me betting she starts evil but ends up good while the rest of the main characters are left with limited circumstances.
Surprise - I can confidently say NO without even watching the trailer!
I believe the actual title is The Huntsman: Winter's War, which is a little less ridiculous but too reminiscent of a Marvel franchise entry.
If it's as good as "The Witches of Eastwick" - I would gladly see that !
3 actresses in the same movie - what a concept.
Theron and Blunt look good here, I wish they would go some other redhead besides Jessica Chastain. I know that's heresy on this blog, but with due respect I would just like a little more variety from the casting people.
reminds me of Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters.
Jessica Chastain, again she is NOT a film star,a competent actress but no way a film star.
MARK: Blunt's not a movie star and Theron's not a bankable actress.
/3rtful -- Charlize actually has a pretty good box office track record.
ladyedith -- it is never heresy to ask for more variety from casting people. It's one of the worst aspects of Hollywood. they take actors and just wear them out with the public by casting them constantly even if they're not right for projects and then they move on to the next person and do that all over again. I'd rather all stars only made like 1 or 2 max movies a year. think of how much more variety we'd have in our cinema.
Nat: Absolutely true. As just one example, between Suffragette, Disney thinking a second attempt at Alice in Wonderland as an action movie was a good idea (and it kind of is, just not with those central two cast members), Chastain in this and Cotillard as "Jeremy Irons' daughter" in Assassin's Creed? I get that her getting all of them would just be the same problem with a different face, but Katie Jarvis getting none of those opportunities is PATHETIC.
Theron is looking more and more like Sharon Stone. Sigh. I miss the Stone Age.
@Nathaniel - thanks for your support on this - I honestly think Chastain is doing too many films at this time. Seeing this trailer just reminds me that a lot of films are less interesting because of the lack of surprise I feel when I see the cast. Films should heed the lesson of Game of Thrones - choose the unknown and unexpected.
Exactly,She looks like she doesn't even want to be in the trailer, she is mute with shock.
Yes! They brought back the best elements of the first movie - the Wicked Queen and The Huntsman.
I mean, if you're going to make a sequel to a SNOW WHITE people and not have Snow White in it, I guess the least you can do is cast two extra actresses in main roles in her place. Well done on that. Hemsworth doesn't even seem to be in it much? And the Blunt stuff is *so* FROZEN. I have no doubt that that is intentional.
" The CGI doesn't look very convincing."
Neither did it in the original, yet it got an Oscar nomination for it.
Chastain is miscast as hell in this...which is often the case with her.
@Ez I totally agreed!!! If it wasn't stated, I wld've thot its Sharon Stone too, come to tink o it, she'd hav been a good choice!! lol
Theron looks super scary w her bloody mouth!!!
Is this supposed to b the prequel or sequel to Snow White & The Huntsman??
Yes, I'm going to rush out the first weekend, and hope a horde of others do, to bump the numbers up. Of course, even with good box office, they're likely to say ( not that 3 great actresses are a draw) but that Chris Hemsworth can really pack audiences in.
The movie may be no better than a standard action flick, but I daydream in those anyway. At least in this one, my musings will be full of Charlize, Emily, and Jessica.
I regard it as a good sign for a movie that Jessica is cast. I love her. I agree that casting needs to be more adventurous, but I'd hope they'd replace some of those male-gaze generic competent-enough actresses, not the lively enthusiastic talented ones like Chastain.
I just feel the trailer at least was selling whatever it is. Trashy crazy silly fun. Anyone wants to get so serious about it after watching the first one, is kind of not making too much sense to start with.
Just to have 3 actresses headlining a blockbuster movie is quite celebratory for a pace change already.
So whatever, I'm in.
Seems like an odd project for Chastain.
Movie looks kind of bad but maybe fun in a hate watch kind of way.
