Laura Benanti Predicting "Supergirl" in 2013

We're celebrating 1979 this month so let's talk about one of its most underused / overtalented showbiz babies: LAURA BENANTI.

She's a Tony Winner (Gypsy) with great pipes, Broadway's Queen of Twitter (giving her 71 thousand followers more joy with hilarity than you can fathom if you don't follow her), and this decade she's been making inroads to television stardom with recurring characters on several shows including "Nurse Jackie" and "Nashville" but she's still without a big leading role which she more than obviously deserves!

She'll next be seen as Supergirl's birthmother in the pilot of "Supergirl" (2015) - currently having pirating problems -- so add psychic to her many gifts. See, In 2013 she stripped down into Supergirl costume at a Skivvies* concert! See the video after the jump...

There's a really good interview wither over at Playbill in which she talks about her career, the upcoming She Loves Me Broadway revival, her TV roles, and the weird non-momentum from her success as the Baroness in The Sound of Music Live

I really thought after “The Sound of Music" they were going to be like, “What musical would you like to do, Laura Benanti?” But that didn't happen.

and icymi the much discussed trailer to "Supergirl" which looks too CW generic for me (I'm aware it's on CBS) but which many people find exciting

*For those who are unfamiliar The Skivvies are a musical duo, Lauren Molina and Nick Cearley, who perform in their underwear, often at 54 Below, and always have celebrity guest stars.

I was all on Twitter going "Is that Laura Benanti as Supergirl's mother?" when the trailer came out and the response was crickets. Thank you for confirming I'm not (that) crazy.

I met her last year at the annual gala for the Ford's Theatre in D.C. (photographic evidence proves it), and she's was so sweet and genuine and more attractive in person than on the screen -- not to mention her lovely voice.

I've never seen a performance, soundbite, interview question etc. from Laura Benanti that wasn't wickedly funny and/or moving. I do think Laura gets cast quite a bit but the projects themselves often aren't worthy of her (The Playboy Club, Women On The Verge, etc).

Laura is the type who makes me long for the old time variety shows where the leading lady would have to do it all. I particularly think she'd be great on a live show since she seems significantly quick witted. Why isn't she on Jimmy Fallon all the time?

I guess my only career advice to her would be to play some concert dates in LA and NYC. As much as I love Audra, and like Kristin, I really don't want to see them at the Hollywood Bowl again.

She's an absolute favourite of mine, she's great on Nashville, but left early this season to do Radio City Music Hall. Don't forget her Good Wife appearances as wife of Colin Sweeney.
Or her funny videos, or her hosting of the upcoming Drama Desk Awards, she's always funny and fabulous.
Hey CBS or HBO - do 6 episodes of a variety show with Benanti and guests every season. Guaranteed to be great, critically approved, and an absolute treasure.
We don't need another fantasy show, give us a Broadway revue show with Benanti please.

I fell in love with her on the Matthew Perry sitcom Go On, and my love was cemented with her appearance on the Tonys several years ago when she did that number with Megan Hilty and Andrew Rannels about starring in canceled TV shows. Pure brilliance and charm.

Melissa Benoist has WAY more personality than all the bland starlets on CW shows, so I'm actually looking forward to this.

And Laura Benanti is my new fav--she's only one of a handful of celebrity types I follow on Twitter because she is so hilarious! I hope when NPH actually puts a variety show together, she'll be like Harvey Korman to his Carol Burnett.

And is Greg Berlanti the new king of the world? He has, like, 10 shows still in production. Is he Irving Thalberg, Jr. reincarnated?
