Guardians Up, Captain Down at the Saturn Awards

The Saturn Awards, which began in the 1970s, get increasingly more confusing each decade. When they first began they were very sci-fi/fantasy niche and now they regularly seem to honor films that don't have anything at all to do with once geeky now mainstream genres like that. Consider that they have nine best picture type categories and they're expansive enough in their definitions that at least half of Oscar's Best Picture nominees were nominated for something and Whiplash and The Theory of Everything even get to be Best Film winners -- neither of which seem at all "genre" though I suppose The Theory of Everything is kinda cosmic in that it has a genre icon in Stephen Hawkings as its subject.

The big winners at the annual event were Interstellar and Guardians of the Galaxy. The big loser was Captain America: Winter Soldier which had the most nominations of all (11) and managed to lose them each one. Complete list of winners after the jump...

(Somehow beating Snowpiercer of all things which totally fits within the Saturn Awards realm... and, hilariously, Inherent Vice is nominated for "Action/Adventure")

Best International Film: The Theory of Everything
(Beating a truly random selection of films which have extremely tenuous connections or none at all to genre fare including: Bird People, Calvary, Force Majeure, Mood Indigo, and The Railway Man)
Best Independent Film: Whiplash
(Beating a truly random selection of films which have extremely tenous connections or none at all to genre fare including I Origins, A Most Violent Year, The One I Love, Grand Piano, and The Two Faces of January --- why do they have this category?)

Best Actress: Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl
Best Supporting Actor: Richard Armitage, The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies (do you think Lee Pace toasted him at home?)

Best Performance by a Younger Actor: MacKenzie Foy, Interstellar (she played the young Jessica Chastain)

Truth: Saturn is obsessed with Luke Evans. Last year, his movie Fast & Furious 6 won in the action category (but Hobbit 2 lost to Her). This year, both his films in 2014 won Best Picture in two different categories.

I actually wanted Dracula: Untold nominated for the Oscar for Costume Design (seriously beautiful work), so I can't complain about it winning here.

I can complain about it beating two of the best films of the year for Horror. No. Bad Saturn Awards. Go to your room.
