Meryl Sings "Cold One" - A Best Original Song Contender

[Editors Note: In the neverending soap opera of Nathaniel's lifelong on again/off again romance with Meryl Streep, they are in love again at the moment. Just thought you'd like to know.]

Everything about this clip is promising. Streep's raspy voice, that low-key estranged but still domestic comfort vibe, the fluffy dogs, it's matter-of-fact history "...a long time ago". People didn't seem thrilled by the trailer to Ricki and The Flash but but with Jonathan Demme behind the camera and behind the script, there will surely be moments to savor regardless of whatever it does or doesn't amount to as a film.

Jenny Lewis wrote original songs for the film including this one. Do we have our first Oscar contender in that category? (I updated that speculative chart to include this tune as well as the two Southpaw songs by Eminem.)

Poor Don Gummer! He's facing another round of red carpets and awards shows.

I can't wait for this movie because Mammie is my personal favourite of Streep's daughters from her great guest appearances on TGW and seeing her act opposite her mom should be so fun in itself. Also having Meryl not nominated for acting but performing a song at the Oscars seems the perfect thing for fans and non fans because this seems like a film that will be good and do well because Streep is a draw and go as far as a globe nom for Meryl. I believe in the film because of Diablo who can be a big miss with something like Jennifer's Body but she wrote the brilliant scripts for Juno and especially Young Adult. Also she created the very underrated United States of Tara giving Toni Collette her greatest role to date and introducing us all to Brie Larson who everyone has got to love right?

Free Don Gummer!

Email game I played with friends the other day: trying to come up with terrible but plausible fake taglines for this movie. My picks: "Sometimes family doesn't rock" and "Get Braid-y to Rock".

I see most every film Meryl stars in. I see most every film Sebastian Stan stars in. Who knew they would ever star in a movie together? I'm happy and excited!

I'm curious to see if "Spotlight" from "Pitch Perfect 2" could show up in the season, especially as it's fairly plot-integrated.

Is it correct that in the Grammy Award for Best Original Song for Visual Media, only the writers are awarded? If so, sad... I was hoping Meryl might get the G in an EGOT.

I think this is my most anticipated movie of the year. It'll probably be more "fun" than particularly "good" (a la Meryl's other summer comedies), but I'll take it.

Chris - was that written for the film?

Heard this was great. Sony gets props for slowly unwrapping an August 7 film. Streep with a guitar has always been the big selling point, so I am glad they are starting to show it. She is a great singer and performer. Good luck to Mamie, Diablo and Demme.

Sophie's Choice reunion!!!

by now, i'm officially sick of her. there are other actresses her age that also deserve to work. sorry.

If Streep did not star in it, there would be no movie made at all. She's her own attraction. Please step right up and sell tickets if you want to play.

Love it! Still think the script and movie as a whole will play better than the trailer. She still seems headed for that 20th nomination but, whatever the case, she looks like she had a blast filming this.

I can vouch that their plan B was to have me play Rickie as a 35-year old mom.

The new songs in Pitch Perfect 2 are "Flashlight" and "Crazy Youngsters". The former is specific to the film, according to this TIME article: http://time.com/3859200/pitch-perfect-2-soundtrack-music/

I'm pretty sure "Crazy Youngsters" (end-credits tune) is specific to the film, too.

Also, I love this Ricki and the Flash clip. The bit we heard of this song in the trailer(s) was Basic, but this stripped-down live performance - those emotionally charged cracks in Meryl's voice! - is great.

Nope... still a NO.

looking forward to Meryl.. I always do. I would have preferred it if Demme had shot this the way he did Rachel Getting Married. Would love to have seen Meryl in a performance that is caught off guard.

Thanks Donovan!

Yassss! My body is indeed ready for Queen Meryl again!

And she doesn't have to trot out her very over-it husband on the red carpets this year. She has her brother that she took to the Oscars when "Julie & Julia" was nominated, and this year in particular, it's time for some mother-daughter pairings with Mamie since she's her co-star.

July 25, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterRik

I know this post is more about Meryl Streep, but if Jenny Lewis wrote these songs, she'd be a possible Oscar nominee. That'd be awesome! She's a great talent. I like it when the Academy nominates great singer-songwriters (Elliott Smith, Aimee Mann).

July 25, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

This does look promising, but was "I'll See You In My Dreams" (from the film of the same name) also original? I'd like to think that one would also be a contender. Very well integrated and so memorable. And I really want that film to be nominated somewhere, and I don't have high hopes for Danner, the supporting actor (what's his name?), or the script, though all are possibilities.

Wow...Meryl simply knocked the guitar & vocals for "Cold One" out of
the park...
