"Some of these noms are as fucked up as Cheryl Boone Isaac's pronunciation of "Iñárritu.""

I'm SCREAMING.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSean Diego

happily surprised for the love for Brooklyn While some were thinking Carol wouldn't get any nominations, let's take comfort in the fact that it did get costume, cinematography, and screenplay, nominations that no one was sure it would get.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commentertom

The music that played when Krasinski and Isaac's walked out was....funky?

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

I still haven't seen the bulk of what's been nominated, yet that doesn't keep me from hating these nominations. The category fraud. The laziness. The lack of imagination. The "been there, done that." And the worst of it all, I now have to see Joy and The Hateful Eight.

The brightest spot for me: Stallone.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Creed got one nomination. Despicable.

Also, who the hell is gonna win Supporting Actress? I could see anyone but McAdams.

5th time an actor has been nominated for the same role in two different films (Stallone).

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBen

No, the Tom Hardy nomination is more an application of the Leonardo rule: if he gets nominated for Actor, he ALWAYS drags another male actor along for the ride in Supporting

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTravis C

I'd have to double check, but is this the first time since 1977/78 that the winner of Best Director was nominated again the very next year? Referring to Woody Allen.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

Happy for

Hardy - as I pointed out on this v blog Leo alays brings in the men
Lawrence - she is gr8 in the movie,no backlash here
Rampling - after bafta I thought it would not happen
Mirren -somwhere she is screaming
Cranston - for his old fashioned movie turn
the C/Kate's joining the 7 up club

Sad for

Fonda - my fave this year
Blunt - what does she have to do
Dano - category confusion
Scott - he seemed so assured

Not Happy

The hateful 8 - only score i agree on,no to JJL at her most annoying
Redmayne - They love the Ham
Fassbender- miscast
No Carol in Picture or Director.
So Macho these noms

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMary

Looks like now we know what they really cared about in Creed. Ugh. Who walks away from that thinking Stallone is the MVP? AMPAS.

Oh, Rachel McAdams. Not like this. Not for that.

Animated Feature sprinkled two surprises in there and I'm here for it.

Mad Max did incredible. Good for them.

That Costume nod for The Revenant? Oh dear.

Best Director Academy Award nominee, Adam McKay. This is what can happen with late buzz, people.

Of course they abso-fucking-lutely went with The Big Short's gawdawful editing. Of course!

That Song category is almost as bad as Supporting Actress. All sole nominees from their respective films + two docs!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

Adam McKay instead of Todd. I can't handle this. The world has spun off it's axis this week.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

Well Stallone is getting an Oscar - no doubt about it now.

Since Ridley Scott and Todd Haynes didn't get best director every one can get behind George Miller - Let's Hope!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

Haven't seen 45 Years yet, but THRILLED for Charlotte Rampling, one of the greatest actresses in the universe. She has no chance at a win, but we can always now say Oscar nominee (and 4-time Cesar nominee, which is even better) Charlotte Rampling.

Good: Carol in Cinematography, Hardy in Supporting Actor (I thought he was amazing and couldn't understand how he lost traction in the race), the out-of-the-box Animated category, Ex Machina for Effects, a few others.

Bad: Category fraud (although that's how Rampling got in, so I can't complain too much), Redmayne, and the two most heartbreaking snubs - Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda #oscarssoageist.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

One other good thing I will say about these nominations is that the visual effects nominees this year seem to be on the more subtle side. The visual effects in these films all serve the story and do not dominate their respective films. Even Star Wars.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

This is all very uninspiring. I was hoping that it would be different this year but I should have known better. The only genuine surprise for me was Lenny Abrahamson for best director, but I'm guessing he bumped out Ridley Scott which is a damn shame.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMDA

I will never understand the love for The Big Short. Did someone tell voters "you must love this movie or you'll be stupid"?

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSad man

THE GOOD...
Phyllis Nagy
Charlotte Rampling
Carter Burwell
Johann Johannsson
Mad Max love

THE BAD...
Big Short in Picture/Director (disgusting)
no African American acting nominees
category fraud

THE UGLY,,,
no CAROL in Best Picture (this will hurt for awhile)

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterryan

Sawyer - Rampling got in on category fraud? What movie did you watch? The one I watched, she was the LEAD all the way!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTravis C

Category fraud for Mara and Vikander helped pave the way for Rampling.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

@travis C-- I think he means fraud by Mara and Vikander lead to Rampling getting nominated, not that Rampling was committing fraud herself

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commentertom

Well, in the end it's better for Carol than I expected , though the BP snub hurts.

Brie Larson was on CNN 2 minutes after the announcements - from Australia nonetheless. Somebody is winning an Oscar this year.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenteradelutza

Yayyyyyy:
- Brooklyn sneaking in for Best Picture.
- Charlotte Rampling - and at her most potent. A great argument for actresses over 50.
- Oscar nominee Tom Hardy.
- Brie Larson, Lenny in Best Director, Room love in general. Such a great little film.

Ughhhhh:
- Rachel McAdams being nominated for her laziest work. Happy for her but there were better performances this year. (And I still believe she should've been nominated for Mean Girls.
- No Jacob Tremblay. Why is it harder for a younger male to be nominated? (In comparison to younger girls?)
- Vikander being nominated for Ex Machina would've been a lot more fun. But the Oscars don't go for fun too much. (Sorry, Mila Kunis...)
- Carol shut out for Picture and Director !!!!
- Mara and Vikander being shoved in Supporting, preventing real supporting performances to get in and freeing up Best Actress for weaker performances.
- Not that I'm mad about the Actress line up. I'm actually fine with it but I'm a little bitter than Jennifer Lawrence and I are the same age and she has 4 Oscar nominations.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKaa

Imagine being a fly on the wall wherever Harvey Weinstein is right now. You'd have to fly away pretty quick before his fist crushed you as it passed through the wall.

Perhaps the only people crankier than Harvey are the lesbians film goers at the L Chat message board. That place is on fire right now.

Also, shout out to David Ehrlich. His tweets articulate my pain so precisely.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

At least Brooklyn and Room got in for best picture, with Abrahamson getting a surprise nomination and Donoghue got recognized for her gem of an adaptation. NONE of these were sure things by any stretch of the imagination.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Hoping for a Winslet win just because she is TRUE supporting and the most deserving from the TRUE supporting nominees.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge

Carter Burwell scored his first nomination ever. That's something to be pleased about. #graspingatstraws

Inside Out scored Original Screenplay, after all. Definitely something to cheer for.

Room really struck a chord with them. Who knew?

Brooklyn gets the An Education nominations, basically.

I kinda like that Ridley Scott wasn't automatically rewarded for making a decent film after so long. Hopefully it lights a fire for the next one, he can do better. In Director, I mean.

Room and Ex Machina are A24's first huge nominations so good for them.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

Bye! See you next year!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Yay to Rampling (finally!! sigh o relief) & Abrahamson!!

Nooooooo to JLaw (again??!!), the snub o Dano, Haynes & Carol for best pic (its probably at no.9)

But I tink the biggest & most shocking snub is Ridley Scott!!! He was widely tipped to finally win. Look like now Innaritu might pull a back-to-back win for best pic & dir

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

I have to say that although Carol really should have been up for BP (and Director, come on!), I'm happy that Brooklyn got a nod - there's at least one nominee in that category to offset all the testosterone. Plus Saoirse Ronan gave a lovely performance, plus plus there was something about the story that set me and all 3 of my companions to tears by the end. So, yay for Brooklyn.

Rachel McAdams: one of those Seriously? noms (not unlike Catherine Keener for Capote): I mean, she was fine in it and all, but it was hardly a taxing role for her - surely something more worthy could have nabbed a spot here.

Jennifer Lawrence: Too much, too soon, give it a rest, Academy.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRob

I feel bad for Winslet ( which I never say) for having to compete with 2 leads in supporting due to category fraud! And for what?.. To make a space for Lawrence in Best Actress? It is just not fair to true supporting roles this year......

Think this is Larson's or Ronan's to lose... Having both of this films in Best Pic helps them the most....

Thank God for no Mirren!

Overall- not that exciting after having a rather unpredictable year... Why do I always expect more?

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjamie

I love the Rachel McAdams nomination. I thought she did fine work in the film and she did it without relying on distracting ticks that, regardless of whether they're based on the actual person, disrupted the film to a jarring degree at times. I like Ruffalo in the movie, but I think he's one of the least deserving of a nomination out of that cast, especially next to Michael Keaton's great work.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterthefilmjunkie

@George - AGREE x 1000

"Hoping for a Winslet win just because she is TRUE supporting and the most deserving from the TRUE supporting nominees. "

Using my John Goodman voice from Lebowski, "This Category Fraud shall NOT STAND"

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

May the failure of Carol's Best Picture nod haunt Harvey for YEARS. Regardless of what you thought about the quality, that release schedule was garbage and the buzz totally died when it finally expanded LAST WEEK. It premiered and was ready for theaters in MAY. Ridiculous.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

I fear the JLaw backlash starting, I thought she was good in Joy and I don't hate that nomination, and if Mara and Vikander campaigned in lead my guess is she would've been left out of the best actress lineup (along with Rampling)!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRami

Mark The First: Yes re: Brooklyn - and Mad Max: Fury Road gets the exact same ten nominations as Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World!

Biggest surprise to me is the absence of Ridley Scott in the Directing category. Todd Haynes was touch and go, but Scott was considered pretty much a sure thing.

Other than that: a pretty good set of nominations. Not the best, not the worst. Will be fun trying to predict the winners from this lot.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEdward L.

trivia: cate blanchett now holds the sole title of most nominated australian at the oscars, moving one ahead of catherine martin [who remains the winningest]

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterpar

Oscars so white has started up again. This is actually entertaining. My heart was crushed already but the lack of precursor support for Creed and Compton. Yes I know guilds gave attention to Compton but it felt like an afterthought.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Ez - that was "Hold On" by En Vogue. So random!

Also, remember a year or two ago when all those think pieces came out about how nominations are now concentrated amongst only a few films? They seem pretty spread out this year. I try to keep up with movies and I still have 10 films to see if I want to have seen all the acting, directing and picture nominees.

And for those happy that "Brooklyn" snuck into the testosterone-heavy Pic lineup, there's also "Room"!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

I got Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress all correct!
FUCK YES CHARLOTTE RAMPLING!
god NO stallone.
Lady Gaga is now an Oscar nominee and a Golden Globe winner.
This is Alej-G's world, and we are all just living in it.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Studio Ghibli (When Marnie was There) for Best Animated Feature!
Don Hertzfeldt (World of Tomorrow) for Best Animated Short!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterajnrules

"Manta Ray" by Antony Hegarty is gorgeous. I hope it wins!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

Is the Academy going to start nominating Miss Lawrence for every movie? I capably played a smart astronaut and the leader of my team in the well-received The Martian.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJessica Chastain

I was 19 for 20 in my acting nominee predictions. Only missed Vikander (figured Mirren would elbow her way in). Anyway, now I'm emboldened to call the eventual winners in 20 of the feature film categories:
THE REVENANT (4 - Picture,Director,Actor,Cinematography)
MAD MAX (7 - Editing,Production Design,Makeup & Hair,Special Visual,Sound Editing,Sound Mixing,Costume

1 each for the following:
THE BIG SHORT(Adapted Screenplay)
SPOTLIGHT(Original Screenplay)
ROOM(Actress)
CREED(Supporting Actor)
HATEFUL 8 (Score)
SPECTRE(Song)
SON OF SAUL(Foreign Film)
INSIDE OUT(Animated)
STEVE JOBS(Supporting Actress)

Among those destined to go away empty-handed:
THE MARTIAN
BRIDGE OF SPIES
STAR WARS
THE DANISH GIRL
EX MACHINA
BROOKLYN
SICARIO
CAROL

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKen

No Best Picture and Best Director Nomination for CAROL!!!!!!!!????!!!!!!!!! That's so sad... I hope Carol will win at least best "supporting" Actress....

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commentersteolicious

This year I'm really happy with it all, beginning with my country receiving its first nomination ever in the foreign language film category. So excited for that !

Biggest misses? Carol in best picture AND in production design. Also the Big Short in Best Picture. Now I do believe Spotlight and The Revenant are tied in the first spot to win. Why? Two words: film editing. That nod that many had predicted not to happen finally did for Spotlight and that for me puts the movie on a good place, even if The Revenant has many more nominations. It even got a Visual effects nod over Jurassic World for that bear !

Tom Hardy's nomination though fills me with joy. I didn't see it coming but loved it because he's really a fantastic actor. So glad too for Rampling and a bit annoyed to see Lawrence even if I had predicted her. Category fraud worked for Mara and Vikander, and we all love that at the end of the day.

What else... Star Wars got 5 nods and I think the only one it may have missed was in production design. Some fans must be pissed that it didn't make the Best Picture list but I am a fan and knew it wasn't happening.
The other group that must be pissed are the ones rooting for Straight Outta Compton. I actually knew they were not going to be named when the film wasn't nominated for best sound mixing. They got a screenplay nod and that's great.

Awesome to see Brooklyn for best movie even if it missed costume design and I don't know if being pissed for Ridley Scott being excluded from the best director list or happy that Lenny Abrahamson got in... Weird but awesome !

And we now have Oscar nominee Lady Gaga and Sam Smith. Crazy, huh? Wanna hear something crazier? I think Gaga has a shot and Warren may finally be getting the award.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPablo

@Pablo - "Category fraud worked for Mara and Vikander, and we all love that at the end of the day."

We do? I think the consensus here is that no, we do not, even if it's not surprising.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

At least we know they won't nominate JLaw next year for X-Men or Passengers. Or will they nominate her for both, giving her 6 nominations? She has really captured the imagination of horny, old white men.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJono

A second consecutive all white year in the acting categories. Yeah. Time to revive that hashtag.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

tom--you're on! at least our girl Jennifer Jones held the title for 70 years...not too shabby!

I am over the moon for Charlotte Rampling...YES!

All in all, this is not as bad as I thought it would turn out. I am sad for Banks, Courtenay, Caine and Fonda. And what the F does Oscar Isaac have to do to get an Oscar nomination!

The most egregious result is, yet again, people of color were left out. Michael B. Jordan and Idris Elba did fantastic work and should be on these lists.

Looks like it's Spotlight against The Revenant for Best Picture. Hoping for Spotlight, but The Revenant is a fine picture.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Creed has two black writers, one black director and a black protagonist. They only nominated the white veteran.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

That's it, I'm on-board for the JLaw backlash.
