Jackie Brown, Amistad, and Django Unchanined had only white acting nominees.
As I suspected, these nominations leave me rooting for The Big Short to win best Picture now. #justkidding #notreallykidding #GoMadMax
Also, I think Tom Hardy is a worthy nomination for The Revenant... but if Iñárritu wins back-to-back picture and director prizes for that relatively mediocre film, it'll be a tragic statement on/by the Academy.
@Pablo: you're from Colombia ? :) Glad that your country finally got a Foreign Language nomination !
Happy about Stallone, he was the only GREAT thing about that movie. Sad about Carol for the 2 big snubs. Sad that Mara was put in the wrong category but hopeful she'll win for her best-of-the-year-by-anyone performance anyway. She's probably the movie's only shot at a win. Fine with JLaw...she was good in the film, though I'd rather have seen Mara or Vikander. Thrilled about Charlotte...and I wonder if she could sneak a surprise win out of it.
I just watched Spotlight and GOOD LUCK finding an Oscar clip for McAdams.
Has anyone mentioned the Sorkin snub? In retrospect, that seems pretty surprising.
I agree with those calling this The Revenant v. Spotlight. Of the films I've seen, I would include both in my top 10 so I'm OK with that.
Predictions:
Revenant - Picture, Director, Actor, Cinematography, Editing
Spotlight - Screenplay
The Big Short - Screenplay
Mad Max - Makeup, Sound, Sound
Room - Actress
The Danish Girl - Supporting Actress, Production Design
Cinderella - Costumes
Creed - Supporting Actor
Star Wars - Effects, Score
The Hunting Ground - Song
Nothin': Brooklyn, Bridge of Spies, The Martian
Question #1:
Can Sandy Powell win without Colleen Atwood nominated? They only win when the other one is nominated.
Is Jennifer Lawrence the new Meryl Streep? I realize they are completely different performers, but something seems to be happening now where Lawrence can do no wrong in the eyes of the Academy. Streep was 28 (?) when she started getting nominated, and even she did not receive this kind of back to back nominations. Maybe it's a phenomenon with Jennifer's vibrant personality and the fact that she worked three times with David O. Russell? Clearly she is talented, but something else is going on. It may be a topic for another day, but I am kind of dumb-founded that she has garnered so much attention so quickly (especially when you realize that at 25 she is on her way to easily surpassing the number of nominations received in their entire career by Glenn Close, Michelle Pfeiffer, Debra Winger, Jessica Lange, etc.). Wow.
If the unthinkable happened: the sky turned pink, pigs flew, I turned Republican, and Charlotte Rampling somehow won Best Actress, I would forgive the Academy for the two Carol snubs and the Crash BP award. But none of this will happen.
@Anne Boils - I also have a feeling she's a GREAT schmoozer. Funny, raunchy, charismatic, sexy without being desperate - I'm sure she charms her co-workers and Academy members both on the set and at industry events, which goes a long way.
I want Jennifer Lawrence to say something antisemitic so bad. An abrupt end to her do no wrong momentum would occur and over domestic nightmare will be over.
/3rtful - and you continue to be strange and most unpleasant...
