It's the most wonderful time of the year

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRami

Streep's third Oscar speech is my go to reference to represent with the Oscars are all about.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

It's midnight in Australia. I can't sleep. Good thing that! Looking forward to the noms. Also looking for a weapon to use if Carol misses out.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

Alan Rickman's passing is a sad way to begin what is often the most wonderful time of the year.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy morn.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

I will be furious if the Academy goes for ALL hitmakers in Best Original Song. We deserve a lineup that is JUST as weird and boring as always—JUSTICE FOR MADONNA. If Sam Smith manages a nomination I'll claw my eyes out.

Seriously, music branch. Don't let me down.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

Here we go! I feel like I'm gonna throw up.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

Looking at the comments feed on the YouTube stream is painful...... I've probably seen about ten "GAGA FOR BEST ACTRESS"-esque comments so far.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSean Diego

*claws eyes out*

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

No Going Clear!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

Hayden W. - I've already clawed my eyes out. It's the laziest Best Original Song nominee I can think of in recent memory.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSean Diego

Well, Carol is doing well so far (hope I don't jinx it) and MMFR is doing amazingly well. The only thing that stings so far is that snub in Costume for Brooklyn :(

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

World of Tomorrow and Look of Silence making it in are pure triumphs.

Cannot believe The Revenant squeezed out a Costumes nod.

Sam Smith?! Noooooooo.

Part 2 now.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

Phyllis!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

No Carol.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterWarren

No Todd, no best picture for Carol :( Kill me now.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

Sorry guys.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

Rampling and Leigh got in!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Supporting Actress is COMPLETELY fucked up.

Charlotte Rampling! Tom Hardy! Props to Nathaniel.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

And so category fraud prevails.

I was genuinely hopeful that this years nominations would offer up something different.

Apart from all the MAD MAX love I'm so disappointed.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNicola

LIVID. LIVID. HOW COULD THEY NOMINATE CAROL FOR THOSE AWARDS AND NOT BEST PICTURE. ESPECIALLY GIVEN WHAT GOT IN. LIVID.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCharles O

no CAROL.
seriously FUCK YOU academy FUCK YOU

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRYAN

Oscars so white again!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRami

did ridley scott miss?

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterpar

Oh my god no Carol :(

They category fraud the hell out of supporting actress to make room for..... Jennifer Lawrence?! Ugh, guess now I have to watch Joy.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSanty C.

Oscars so white part 2

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

No nom for Carol or Todd Haynes. Fuck.

Although I am pleasantly SHOCKED Lenny Abrahamson managed to squeeze a best director nom over Ridley Scott.

Pretty pissed off that Rooney and Alicia category frauded their way into supporting actress. Ugh. And I totally predicted that Tom Hardy nomination! They clearly loved the film.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

How could Carol get so many noms and not land in Best Director/Picture?

And seeing Tom Hardy nominated I just knew it was going to be full tilt The Revenant. Between him and Mark Ruffalo, who chews the scenery the most in each movie?

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRahul

Yay!
Charlotte Rampling
Brooklyn

Nay!
No Carol for picture and directing
Too much love for The Revenant
Writing's on the Wall?

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

I think I'm gonna cry. What has Todd gotta do to get a nom?

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

re: Carol, just remember....

BAFTA, the Golden Globes and New York Film Critics Circle

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermark j

So happy for Rampling and Jason Leigh... And not so happy for Lawrence being nominated once again just for being Jennifer Lawrence.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbonobo

Extremely disappointed but not totally surprised Carol didn't make it where it should've. Cannot believe they let BOTH Rooney and Vikander slide in Supporting Actress tho.

I was fully bracing for a Tremblay nod in Actor after it got Best Director.

That Straight Outta Compton Screenplay nod tho. LOLOLOLOL.

Sandy Powell scores double nods again!

The Revenant COMPLETELY cleaned up, damn.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

Definitely some disappointments, but I'm trying to stay positive...

Charlotte Rampling. And no Helen Mirren. Praise.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

No Tarantino!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

I actually got actor, actress, and supporting actress right! Happy about the screenplay noms, but production design makes no sense to me Also 50 shades of Grey is now an Academy Award nominated movie

P.S. Brokesboy- you and I should get together and watch Duel in the Sun in honor of Jennifer Jones who is no longer the youngest 4 time nominee

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commentertom

so white
so hetero
so MANLY

i'm ***SICK*** of AMAS

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterdpm

I was about to post that John Magaro and Tom Hardy are both in two best picture nominees, but then I remembered that Carol did not make it in. =(

I really thought the Academy would call foul on the egregious category fraud for both Mara and Vikander. They are obviously leads!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

no one can ever bitch about about the HFPA again. They've proven their tastes are FAR superior to the Academys yet again

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterlee

My brain is honestly incapable of rationalizing Rachel McAdams getting nominated for Spotlight.

Did anyone else notice how weird the announcement for Straight Outta Compton's screenplay nomination was? It easily received the most applause in the room (what the hell?) and John Krasinski said "Well deserved!" or something along those lines afterward....

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSean Diego

These nominations could have been worse. 2015 was uninspiring and the precursors from the critics to the establishment sort of ruined everything for group think Oscar voters.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Some of these noms are as fucked up as Cheryl Boone Isaac's pronunciation of "Iñárritu."

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSanty C.

Best Actor is totally weaksauce, yet again. Are they even trying?

JLaw is up to FOUR now. Insane. IN. SANE.

Lady Gaga?? LAWD.

Fassbender scores his FIRST Best Actor nod. For Steve Jobs ugh.

Ex Machina manifests itself in only a couple categories.

Foreign Language Film looks as good as it was going to. Mustang!

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

Well that was overall disappointing. Too much macho, too much mediocrity, too much same old same old (esp in the acting categories). But there's some good stuff in there, too. That's the Oscars for you, I'll still be watching, as usual.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRob

Thrilled that Charlotte Rampling got in - Jennifer Lawrence - not great.
Brooklyn - Yay - got best adapted screenplay, BP, and best actress. Team Ronan.

Bad:
Category Fraud succeeds for both Mara and Vikander - I hope they both lose to either JJL or KW. I don't want to see either of them win.

No Carol for picture and directing - remember history will be kinder to "Carol" than the Academy

The Revenant got way too many nominations - now we have to hope that this initial infatuation starts to balance out over the next month.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

That Tom Hardy nomination is a "Mad Max was great, here's Jacob Tremblay's spot" gift from the academy.

I was feeling a Star Wars BP nomination there for a minute...

8 of the 20 nominees are first-timers, each category has a previous winner, 5th straight film for Inarritu to get an acting nominee. That's now 10 nominees from his films.

4th nomination in 5 years for JLaw.

4 out of 5 first time nominees in Best Director

Speilberg now holds the record for most producing nominations ever with 9.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBen

Cheryl Boone Isaacs's had a less mortifying "Dick Poop" moment trying to pronounce Innaritu's name. There should be a wager next year which name she will mangle.

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

Well, I'll take the small victories ... Brooklyn in Best Pic, Rampling, Straight Outta Compton in Screenplay, the Mad Max love, A War in Foreign Language, Lenny Abrahamson in Directing, all of the Documentary nominees (all deserving), no Helen Mirren, and ... ummmm ... ummm ......

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

no blacks, no gays in best picture but yay for women

January 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commentergary

Guy Lodge and the minions at Gold Derby you worship Lawrence are incredibly pleased she's up to four Oscar nominations and she has a long ways to go before she's 30 years of age! Bitch.
