Michael Caine Just Like All of Us: Assumes Leo Will Win Oscar

Dancin' Dan here with your latest Best Actor Oscar news.

In an interview with with Britain's Radio 4, the venerable two-time Oscar winner dared to step in the #OscarsSoWhite quagmire (let's just not go there, shall we?), asking people to be patient "Of course it will come. It took me years to get an Oscar."

More importantly, he reminded everyone about the best part of not being nominated: You don't have to attend the ceremony.

24 hours on an aeroplane and I've got to sit there clapping Leonardo DiCaprio. I love Leonardo, he played my son in a movie, but I'm too old to travel that far and sit in an audience and clap someone else.

And even more importantly, he said aloud what everyone else knows but have mostly refrained from saying out loud: Leonardo DiCaprio is winning the Best Actor Oscar this year. Not that he's voting for Leo, or that this feels like Leo's year, but that he IS winning.

And certainly it seems like Leo's to lose. Who could pose a serious threat to the raw bison liver-eater?

If anyone understood what acting actually is (because the whole gimmick of The Revenant means that little to no actual acting is going on), Damon would be the shoe-in of that field to get the statue.

He still wants a Best Actor Oscar. But the Academy has never given a two-time winner in the supporting categories a third Oscar in the leading one. I don't believe anyone will break this taboo anytime soon (that means you De Niro).

Successful white actors should really keep their mouths shut about the matter if they're only going to derail the conversation. It's not about them.

At least his comments aren't nearly as atrocious and out-of-touch as Charlotte Rampling's. She must *really* want Brie Larson to win the Oscar!

Caine should be there for Youth.

You should hear me when I get a few drinks in me.

Sean Diego - So people shouldn't voice any opinions. Why don't we just stop Free Speech completely?

Unpopular speech is protected. But there is a price for everything you say or do positive or negative regardless of your intent.

"Who could pose a serious threat to the raw bison liver-eater?"

Bryan Cranston. And I would be delirious. Say what you will about Trumbo (and everyone has), Cranston's work is not only nomination-worthy, it's more compelling, nuanced than DiCaprio's. There are so many reasons why this could happen that I may bet on it as a longshot.

I still think the main reason Leo is "guaranteed" a win is that the world (and that includes voting AMPAS members) want to put it behind them. But if enough people assume he's going to win and vote for someone whose performance they actually LIKED this year, well...

/3rtful, why don't you learn with your own words?

And also, DeNiro already has a lead acting award. Huh?

January 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn

Glenn Close, De Niro's most recent nomination was in supporting actor, a category he has won, hence if he were to win it again would make him a two-time winner in supporting and they won't allow this to transpire. If he wants a third he need to insist Russell writes him a leading role.

RobMiles - Where did I say that people shouldn't voice any opinions? I'm saying that it's counterproductive to progress for successful white actors like Michael Caine or Charlotte Rampling to derail conversations about diversity in the film industry/Academy.

The right to Free Speech doesn't mean that you shouldn't be held accountable for what you say.

I feel the new take is a promising start

I really think Picket Smith and her hubby Will
should just cool it instead of stirring the pot.
I do not care what he says now. For me it is sour
grapes.

ITA, Mary. Caine should be nominated...and win for Youth. What moving work.

January 22, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

RobMiles, freedom of speech does not mean freedom of consequences. Isn't criticizing someone for what they said free speech as well?

What happened to critical thinking skills?

Anyways, I've come around to Leo winning. I've accepted it into my heart. Now can we move on to people more deserving of their elusive first Oscar?

January 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

We all need Leo to win so we can have less "The Revenants" in our lives. There will be a standing ovation. Everyone will clap. Leo will give a Mathew Macanaughy style entitled speech and we'll all roll our eyes and move on.
