Cate and Sandy on the Set of "Ocean's 8"

by Chris Feil

We're pretty excited for the Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett-led Ocean's retooling here at The Film Experience - no surprise considering the cast also includes Sarah Paulson, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, and Awkwafina. Can you believe we have to wait almost two years for this thing?!

Well, the film recently began filming and we're of course foaming at the mouth to see our first glimpse of these actresses together! Here are some shots of our headliners in action, with Bullock looking like Miss Congeniality's Gracie Hart back in action but Blanchett giving her audition for a Prince version of I'm Not There. One can hope that costume designer Sarah Edwards (The Last Days of Disco, Michael Clayton) has even more outfits like this for Blanchett to play with.

More looks and thoughts after the jump...

One detail we've neglected to mention here is that Gary Ross will be directing. Yes, the Pleasantville, Seabiscuit, and Hunger Games Gary Ross. He's also written the script with Olivia Milch, but we can't help but wish this was more of a top-to-bottom girl power affair like Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time is shaping up to be. Cate and Sandy look to be having a ball, though!

"Would you like to visit me on Sunday?" We're not shy about obsessing over Blanchett's locks or frocks, but this is a look. Can her task in the Ocean octet require multiple disguises, wigs, and assorted trickery please? She's already a master of disguise, so why not play one.

But wait, does Ocean's Eight also have a mascot we didn't know about?

First "Ocean's Ocho" set photos show Anne Hathaway *unrecognisable* in her role as Blanchett's pooch.

If they were hoping to outdo the Clooney/Pitt duet, task already achieved with that first picture.

Blanchett is such a force!

This is Blanchett indulging in her hobby, she knows it's not a film for great actressing but a big load of fun.

Carlos, you can hate Anne Hathaway all you want, but Anne looked great at the Hillary For
Broadway event. Plus, she easily gave one of the best singing performances of that evening. Hathaway is very talented. That is why she gets all this ridiculous hate.

I think Cate will kill it as Hela in Thor: Ragnarök since it's a Taika Waititi endeavor and reportedly the studio has allowed him to do as he pleases.

Why is Gary Ross writing and directing this? Most of his recent filmography is earnest and/or grim. Sure, he wrote "Big," but that was almost 30 years ago. Why tap him when you need sleek and witty?

Cate, Cate, Cate. She is a goddess. I will certainly watch this, no matter what the critics say. It won't be every day that we get to see Cate, Sandra, Helena, Anne and Sarah in one movie. Just awesome.

Yawn.

Better if we had something original. Just cannot get too excited over this bomb.

October 25, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjamie

Shut the hell up haters. Cate 4eva!

October 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Queen Cate will kill it. As for jealous Meryl apostles who hope this will be a bomb, well all I can say is I'm thrilled she's not in this!

Just like JB, I too am living for this.

I hope soooo much that we get pics of Cate and Sarah on set. Carol and Abby Reunited!

Carlos, hombre.... you diss Hathaway. That is a one-way ticket to a SUPERKICK!!!! PARTY!!!!!

October 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

This has nothing to do with Streep.

The whole adaptation (to me) seems like a misfire or missed opportunity to gather these incredible actresses together.

October 26, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Whether it's gonna be a bomb, nobody knows for sure. But I applaud the notion-turned-reality of getting these incredible actresses together for a flick (that has already been proven successful with an all-male cast), knowing how difficult it may be to obtain funding for women-dominated projects. And as many Cate fans here can attest, she's a chameleon and it's exciting to see her in a new guise. And yes, you're right - Streep has NOTHING to do with it.

Still not feeling it Pete.

I actually wasn't Hatha-hating, guys! Just meant it as a joke, making fun of the typical stock click-baity headlines that often come with these sort of set snaps. Only said Hathaway because that's the first one that came to mind. I actually think she's a talented actress (and beautiful, too). Her persona's a bit vanilla yeah, but that doesn't particularly bother me.

Steven - I''m an hombre, but not a bad one ;)

Possible homage to 1937 "Stage Door" & 1939 "The Women"?
Or even 1974 "Towering Inferno"? Filled with stars who usually open a film on their own? Paul Newman & Steve McQueen, et al.
Noticed that Damian Hurst is in "Ocho" also.
Or MGM's coda: More stars than there are in heaven!"

October 27, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGael

My first thought was "Ocean's Ocho" was sort of prequel.
"Ocean's 8" "Ocean's 9" "Ocean's 10."
Like "Star Wars" 1 & 2 & 3 were filmed after
"Star Wars 4 & 5 & 6."
