Got any FYCs ?
Ballots went out today for the Critics Choice Movie Awards (so early. too early) and though I've already reminded fellow voters who is eligible for Young Performer (since you need lists / reminder jogs for the less discussed categories) it occurs to me that I don't keep the best records about some my own awards categories.
This is where you can FYC at me! Why not share yours in our off-Oscar categories like Cameo, Diva, Villain, Hero, Sexpot, Musical Sequence, Credit Sequence, Opening Scene, Ending, Best Kiss and Best Sex Scene to jog my memory so I make good decisions. And what sort of "year in review" lists would you most love to read? All of that starts in December so let your voice be heard.
After the jump, for the curious without twitter, the FYCs I shared today...
For those on twitter why not retweet your favorite pick? I picked one person or movie per category that I hope the voters C-O-N-S-I-D-E-R. But to clarify this is not the same thing as saying "this is my gold medalist!" -- I still haven't seen all the movies I plan to see (it's only November!) so my own preliminary lists could change -- it's just love paired with concern that these particular people/movies might not make the nominee pool in these particular categories unless people are nudged a bit! Aint nothing wrong with nudging when it comes to celebrating fine movie work.

FYC: Hero of the Year - Sunny Pawar, "Lion"
Hero of the Year - Eddie Redmayne, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"
Sexpot - Hayden Szeto, "The Edge of Seventeen"
How about Trevante Rhodes for Best Supporting Actor!
Jena Malone for Best Supporting Actress for The Neon Demon!!!!!!!
Sexpot Of The Year-Ralph Fiennes for A Bigger Splash
Best Acting Ensemble-Moonlight
Diva Of The Year-Kim Min-Hee for The Handmaiden
I haven't seen a ton this year, but the following three performances really struck me and might not get the notice they deserve:
-Luis Alberti, "Eisenstein in Guanajuato"
-Jenjira Pongpas, "Cemeteries of Splendor"
-Laura Dern, "Certain Women"
Dern was my favorite of the four performers in "Certain Women," as I felt she made the most of the least. She turned sitting, observation, and repetitive action/dialogue into an art form!
Also, to me, in a perfect world, "Cemeteries of Splendour" would win every award ever. I have never seen anything like it, even from Apichatpong! It was so unusual, and I sincerely wished the supposedly overlong takes would go on longer.
I would also love for Denis Villeneuve to get some notice for "Arrival." As great as Amy Adams was (and always is, let's be honest), the true star of the film was its undersung director. I imagine he saw something special in this material and was very serious about enacting a left-field vision, which I think is pretty brave considering what most expect from sci-fi (i.e. overly complicated plots and soap operatic, broad strokes emotion). It's so beautiful to take the perspective of the linguist (and therefore humanities) rather than the scientist. It was a lovely infusion of the feminine into a traditionally masculine genre. This could have been a mess, and sometimes you can see the flickers of that almost-mess (it wasn't perfect), but I think he deserves some notice for creating something so unusually delicate without relying on gimmick or empty technological innovation.
Diva - Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy in Jackie
Villain - Marton Csokas as Sheriff Brooks in Loving
Hero - David Oyelowo as Robert Katende in Queen of Katwe
Sexpot - André Holland as Kevin in Moonlight
Musical Sequence - La La Land: fantasy recap
Opening Scene - The Nice Guys
Ending - The Lobster
HAIL CAESAR - for criticschoice - Alden for best supporting actor and best comedy. for film bitch awards - ensemble and cameo - Channing Tatum (Frances and scar jo)
For film bitch - supporting actress Isabella Rossellini for Closet monster and sex pot - zac for neighbors 2;
Chris Feil: On quality alone, if Naomie Harris (who was very good and did a lot with, if it wins against the category fraud, maybe the smallest winner since Beatrice Straight in terms of screentime) has a shot, I think he should have a shot.
SHIA LABEOUF IN AMERICAN HONEY!!!
And I haven't even seen most of the likely nominees, but my current Best Actress top 10 is incredible...
Isabelle Huppert, Elle
Sônia Braga, Aquarius
Rebecca Hall, Christine
Kim Min-hee, The Handmaiden
Susan Sarandon, The Meddler
Amy Adams, Arrival
Kate Beckinsale, Love & Friendship
Tilda Swinton, A Bigger Splash
Sacha Lane, American Honey
Ruth Negga, Loving
Also, The Love Witch!! For director and all technical categories, especially cinematography.
Don't forget how amazing the editing was in A Bigger Splash.
supporting actress: olivia colman - the lobster
supporting actor: alden ehrenreich - hail caesar
FYC:
Alicia Vikander - The Light Between Oceans (Best Actress in Leading Role)
Alden Ehrenreich - Hail, Caesar! (Best Actor in Supporting Role)
Both deserve recognition for their performances.
Naomie Harris (who was very good and did a lot with, if it wins against the category fraud, maybe the smallest winner since Beatrice Straight in terms of screentime)
Judi Dench had 8 minutes of screentime for Shakespeare in Love.
Best ending: "The VVitch" & "Sing Street". Musical sequence: "Captain Fantastic" w/'Sweet Child O Mine'. Diva: Rebel Wilson in "How to Be Single," Andy Samberg in "Popstar". End credits: didn't "Kubo" have footage of how the animation was assembled and that great Regina Spektor cover?
And yes, "The Love Witch" for a slew of design and technical categories. Samatha Robinson as the Love Witch could be up for Diva, Villain, and/or Sexpot, and we could put Gian Key in the mix for sexpot too.
SEXPOT: MATTHIAS SCHOENARTS!
Diva: Doctor Strange
Cameo: ScarJo in Hail Caesar
Hero: Michele Leblanc in Elle (say what you will, bitch is my hero)
Best sex scene: orgy in Sausage Party
Sexpot: Veronica Osorio as Carlotta Valdez in "Hail, Caesar!"
Fresh, confident, sweet, and interested in other people. She was perfect in her tiny role.
Zootopia for Best Picture
J.J. Totah in Other People for Best Young Actor/Actress.
Or for limited role, or whatever. He was so fun.
For your Actress in a Limited/Cameo role category -- both of the waitresses in Hell or High Water certainly merit a look. Of course I expect to see that moment on the beach in the middle section of Moonlight in your Best Kiss lineup.
The concluding sex scene in Neon Bull would be a good fit for Best Sex Scene. Ditto the scene on the train in Julieta. If you were feeling really sick you could go for Jena Malone in The Neon Demon.
The big song-and-dance from Chevalier for Musical Scene in a non-Musical, as well as any of several A+ choices in Hail, Caesar!.
Underrated Film/s of the Year: Little Men, Louder Than Bombs and A Bigger Splash
Nice (probably directorial) touches in films:
the cats in Elle and Things To Come;
the lavish production art in The Handmaiden
the artful artlessness in Singapore's The Apprentice, the Philippines' Ma'Rosa, Iran/UK's Under the Shadow and Germany's Wild
beautiful and judicious use of pop music in Things To Come
the sublime use of quiet in Bulgaria's Bezbog (Godless)
Child performance:
Lee Zin-Mi, Russia/North Korea's Under the Sun
Lukas & Elias Schwarz, Austria's Goodnight, Mommy
Avin Manshadi, Under the Shadow
Sennia Nanua, The Girl With All the Gifts
Michael Barbieri, Little Men.

Musical Sequence: Deadpool, that fight to DMX's "X Gon Give It To You"

Agreed with everyone else who's said Trevante Rhodes. I'd love to see him get in alongside Ali. Similarly, Tom Bennett for Love & Friendship, but the whole cast deserves credit to being utterly in tune both to one another and the spirit of Austen.
And I know a lot of people are behind Molly Shannon for Other People, and she's great, but I think Jesse Plemons also gave a really interesting, layered performance too.
