Sony is Finally Serious About a "Dragon Tattoo" Sequel

Just when you think the Lisbeth Salander ship has sailed, Sony keeps dangling a Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequel potential in front of us even without original director David Fincher. Well now we have some concrete news: the studio is fast-tracking The Girl in the Spider's Web for a production start next year and they are courting Don't Breathe's Fede Alvarex to take the helm.
Curiously, this skips the two novels that follow Dragon Tattoo, which had at one point been discussed to be combined into a single film. Dropping those stories means we'll miss out on some of the series's most thrilling moments that are also heavy of Salander's background. Not written by original author Stieg Larsson, Spider's Web could be a more standalone piece to keep those reported high costs at bay. Either way, after Don't Breathe was a sharp and tidy thriller (and inching closer to a stunning $90 million gross) it's clear Alvarez is ready for a larger project.
So does this mean that Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig will be totting back to the Sweden's underbelly? Mara's interest is still piqued as of the last time she was asked (depsite rumors of an Alicia Vikander swap), but will the Brady Corbet-directed 70MM musical Vox Lux conflict? Craig can't seem to decide on whether or not to be Bond again, so I'm guessing no Mara would mean no Craig - he also has the miniseries adaptation Purity to keep him busy. Is the series worth exploring without the Fincher/Mara/Craig trifecta?

This was Mara at her very best (2nd place goes to Carol). So I'm all for it if they keep the cast.

If David Fincher was still on board, I would say bring back Rooney...however, with a new director, I say bring in someone new (Rooney was excellent and got a very deserving Oscar nom...she took the character to its limits...why go back and retread a character you already did so brilliantly the first time?). Lisbeth is probably one of the most original female characters written in any medium in the last 10 years (or more)...it would be interesting to see another actor take this on. Alicia would be a very good choice...it would allow her to flex her character actor muscles (like she did so amazingly in Ex Machina).
Too scuzzy with unlikeable characters/actors and everthing just too much Fincher.
I'm only interested if it involves Fincher, Mara, and Craig. That is it. If one of them isn't involved then no thanks.
Agree with Stephen. There's no point in making a sequel to a non-franchisy film like that if you're going to change the cast. They and Fincher made that movie.

The first movie was ok
If they bring a new cast, NO. Why skip those two novels and go to the standalone book? Even more confusing hollywood tricks. And losing an Oscar is bad to Vikander is bad enough for Rooney, so don't add her best role to the list.
I thought their first outing together was terrfic; Fincher always elevates genre fare into something a lot more sinister and Mara and Craig have never been better. Needless to say, that movie made my top ten list that year and I would love to see them return for another go.
cal roth: Bringing back Rapace and Nyqvist for this one might be a better idea. Accent work wasn't a high priority in the original production, but it kind of worked because the original book never really left Sweden. (It wasn't preferable to the originals, but it worked for what it was.) Here, though? There's major American characters as well, so you either have Mara and Craig in their normal voices or in likely broad accents, both of which are probably going to be extremely awkward.
We need more dramatic film series with female leads. Even after taking out superhero films men have those in abundance when compared to actresses (which also helps with salary negotiations by the way). Why the heck r ppl ok with replacing Mara?!? That makes zero sense given she wants to come back. It'd be like replacing Damon in the Bourne identity 2.
Anonny: 1. Yes, we do need more dramatic film series with female leads, but they don't need to be monopolized by one actress. 2. Yes, there need to be more superheroine films. Our Wonder Woman movie is being written by Geoff Johns and Allen Heinberg. Who are infamous in the comics sphere for not being good at Wonder Woman. Yay...? (This is even in spite of one of the more iconic modern Wonder Woman images is about her having shut down a bad film people in the DC Universe were going to make about her. Which is going to be trotted out instantly in the thinkpieces if that movie stinks.) 3. I gave the best possible reason why to toss Mara, even if she wants to come back: The plot of the fourth book doesn't support the original's performance guidelines in terms of accent work, unless Mara is able to do an accent that isn't uncomfortably broad. So, re-hiring Rapace and Nyqvist and moving forward from there seems like the better option.
Without a brilliant director it will become just another thriller. Let's face it, the original material is not very good.
As stated before, without the original talent, there is no further interest.

Rooney Mara wants it so bad. It will hurt so bad if they replace her (and with Alicia Vikander :@)
