Critics Choice Winners 2016: La La Land, Moonlight, and More...

More commentary tomorrow if there's time given all the Golden Globe announcement hoopla and such. But for now all the winners and a couple of notes after the jump.

Mahershara Ali accepts the MOONLIGHT Ensemble Prize

FILM

Picture La La Land

Actress Natalie Portman, Jackie
Hmmm. Interesting since they didn't nominate it for Best Picture with TEN nominations. Imagine if The Bening has to lose to Hilary Swank twice and then Natalie Portman (whilst pregnant) twice, both actors whom she is far more gifted than. But then again I still think Emma Stone is going to win this Oscar.

Actor Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
I still think Denzel has a shot at this Oscar but the race is definitely tightening.

Director Damien Chazelle, La La Land

Supporting Actor Mahershara Ali, Moonlight
Great speech, so gracious.

Supporting Actress Viola Davis, Fences
Yay. She's so happy.

Actress in a Comedy Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins (not present to accept)

Actor in a Comedy Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool
"the man of the hour" but he gives a cute impromptu speech, makes it about the screenwriters

Ensemble Moonlight
They thanked the casting director first which is wise. No shows: Andre Holland and Trevante Rhodes whose duet really sells the final third of the movie. Hopefully they'll let someone besides Ali speak when they win this at SAG since he has all these other chances to speech.

Young Performer Lucas Hedges in Manchester by the Sea
Beautifully sincere acceptance speech about self-doubts and great collaborators

Animated Film Zootopia

Best Song "City of Stars" La La Land

Entertainer of the Year Ryan Reynolds

See Her Award Viola Davis
A new prize for female role models and defeating gender bias in film and television

FILM AWARDS THAT WEREN'T TELEVISED
Which begs the question as to why the BFCA has all these extra "star driven" categories to begin with when there's no way to showcase the stars and thus no reason for them to show to the awards show since they don't get on stage
Action Movie Hacksaw Ridge
Actor in a Action Movie Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
Actress in an Action Movie Margot Robbie, Suicide Squad
Sci-Fi or Horror Movie Arrival
Foreign Language Film Elle
Original Screenplay [Tie] La La Land and Manchester by the Sea
Adapted Screenplay Arrival
Cinematography, Editing, Score, and Production Design La La Land

Emma Stone is still winning the Oscar, though I think all of the likely nominees will deserve it more.

"Imagine if The Bening has to lose to Hilary Swank twice and then Natalie Portman (whilst pregnant) twice, both actors whom she is far more gifted than."

I still think Swank in Boys Don't Cry and Portman in Jackie tops anything Bening has ever done. Her style of acting tends to be too broad for film, IMO.

Um where is Supporting Actress in a comedy series Jane Krakowski?!
Yay for Portman but I can't even if she wins a second oscar. And it seems that The Bening's overdue status is not helping her. Still doubting Emma's ingenuity to win. Still hoping for Adams. Plus Huppert must be nominated.

But then again I still think Emma Stone is going to win this Oscar.

Stop it!

EVAN WINS!!!! FUCK YEAH!!!! BULLET CLUB BAY-BAY!!!!!!!

From the beginning, it's Emma VS Natalie, Annette never was in the run.

I still think Harris in Moonlight and Williams in Manchester gave better performances than Viola Davis in Fences.

I still think Harris in Moonlight and Williams in Manchester gave better performances than Viola Davis in Fences, and I'm wondering if she is really overdue as many said.

So much love for Hacksaw Ridge this week. Wonder if it will continue.

"I still think Swank in Boys Don't Cry and Portman in Jackie tops anything Bening has ever done.:

THIS. Oscar is not about overall quality of career (oh, well, it sometime is but it definitely should not be). There would be nothing shameful about losing to Portman's Jackie performance.

"Her style of acting tends to be too broad for film, IMO.""

I don't agree with this as she is a wonderful actress but your first point stands solid. IMO, there are some fantastic actresses that have yet to win because they've never actually been #1 in their year, and one of those actresses is Bening. I'm rooting for her though. Fingers crossed for The Seagull next year.

Winning is about being the BEST in your given year not just being consistently fantastic. Adams has the similar problem. Consistently giving #2, #3 and #4 performances, does not mean you should win the next time you give the third best performance in your category.

Losing to a performance like Portman's in Jackie (or Black Swan) or Swank in Boy's Don't Cray is nothing to feel bad about all. That would just be losing fair and square!

Umm.. Jude. What is up with those three similar comments?

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMiguel

and if Bening is never #1 in her year (and I think she will be one of these days), then she should win the Honorary Oscar. That is what that is for.

Sometimes the perception of being overdue can definitely help pull off a win, but that happens more in lackluster Actressing years; and definitely not this year nor the year Kids are All Right was released

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterhuh

How is Dev Patel supporting in Lion?

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Yes, I agree that it will still be Denzel that wins the Oscar. The shift might start with the SAGS, then BAFTAs then Oscar right after it. I think Casey Affleck will win the Globes.

I also agree that Emma Stone will eventually win the Oscar.

I think Ali, Davis and La La Land are locks.

I think Director is still a race between Chazelle and Moonlight's Barry Jenkins.

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMiguel

I also agree that Emma Stone will eventually win the Oscar.

Eventually, as in 2021. I agree.

Congrats to Emma Stone for win the Oscar. I wishes her bright future.

Do you guys think La La Land will outblockbuster Arrival?

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

HUH could not have put it better it.Would love Bening to win but it's just not happening.

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMARKGORDONUK

Don't wanna rain on your parade, but some announcer said yesterday the BFCAs predicted the Oscars?? Like, ok, we know some of these members are totally Oscar whores and doormats, ok? It's gross and sounded even grosser.

Good awards, though. Not digesting Natalie Portman in any way. Playing a famous fictional character became a charade for Oscar-bait. Tiresome. And Isabelle Huppert it's better. Period. And you missed the chace to award a legend and not turning Anette Bening's stomach hurt twice.

HFPA are being bolder, even. You're not better than them. You should. Dare to be different for once! It's like living on Groundhog Awards Day. Not funny.

Bening is in a lower-profile film than The Kids Are Alright this year, and if she were to have a chance at an Oscar, she needed the critics behind her. She doesn't have Moore's body of work, so she's not a choice that will obviously scream "overdue" to the voters (and unlike Bening, Moore won some critical kudos). I think she's fighting for a nomination now.

The ingenues like Stone win frequently because there are ingenues competing every year - there were three nominated last year. But a biopic that examines a woman in political power is rare. There have been what, three of them in the Best Actress race in the past 20 years (the two Elizabeth movies and The Iron Lady)? One won, one came close, and one probably didn't deserve to be there.

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I am totally fine with all of these winners. I might have voted differently. But it's a good year for performances. A lot of deserving possibilities.

As for Portman, she is not a great actress. She has gotten lucky with good roles. But she's pretty good in Jackie. And I appreciate that the movie is less about Jackie Kennedy (what else is there to add?) and more a portrait of a woman grieving for something that really was never there. If it was anyone else, I don't know if the movie would have been made. Her star power, however deserved, got this one out there.

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

I am fine with the winners as well.

Here is hoping the final 5 for Best Actress Oscar nominations are:
Portman, Stone, Huppert, Adams, and Streep. I think Negga and Bening are sloping.

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

I am gonna write the unwritable fo ran actressexual : I think Viola Davis is overrated!

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

The good thing about Emma Stone winning is she's so untalented, she'll probably never come back because of the best actress curse.

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRahul

Overall, i feel e wins are all well desereved, but if thr mus b a tie, y not hav one at best actress? It wld b perfect to see both Portman n Stone won the Critics Choice n the Golden Globes n then Bening beats them both at the Oscars! Lol
