I don't think this will hurt her chances... if anything the campaign and overall support for the movie will all be behind her. Just like Volver missing on the Foreign Film nod (and, arguably the script possibility) didn't harm Penelope Cruz's nomination.
Huppert is the awards worthy element of Elle. The movie itself shows how vulnerable Verhoeven is without an airtight script.
Also Marion in Deux jours, une nuit. Anyway, I hate this new trend. Why can't we have the actress AND the movie nominated?
Old trend, Peggy Sue.
I have not caught up with Elle yet (soon!) but from the sidelines it seems like Huppert supporters are setting themselves up for disappointment. Again, haven't seen it, but is Elle not a textbook example of the type of film squeamish voters will go out of their way to avoid? See also: Kidman's almost-nomination for The Paperboy
@Peggy Sue:
Amour and Emmanuelle Riva did it!
So did the following actors and actresses:
Fernanda Montenegro and Central Station
Roberto Benigni and Life Is Beautiful
Catherine Deneuve and Indochine
Gerard Depardie and Cyrano de Bergerac
Isabelle Adjani and Camille Claudel
Max Von Sydow and Pelle the Conqueror
Marie-Christine Barrault and Cousin Cousine
Giancarlo Giannini and Seven Beauties
Valentina Cortese and Day for Night (though in different years, which was admissible at the time)
Liv Ullmann and The Emigrants (again, in different years)
Anouk Aimee in A Man and a Woman,
@Michael C
They nominated Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream. A Unrated (originally NC-17) movie with double anal penetration.
Huppert's not beloved in Hollywood like Burstyn.
Elle tackles female sexuality head on and there is no scarier topic for AMPAS. None. Zero. There was no way that movie was getting nominated and part of me thinks the snub does better for its inevitable cult status. That is a movie and a performance that will age very very well.
Somebody said she's not loved in Hollywood? Way to go, posters! Admit the Oscars are a pageantry "Miss Congeniality" parade and so be it, then Why caring for ACTUAL perfs or quality cinema?? Some people belong in the Jeff Wells website for life.
It was me and that's not my view but seems that's Hollywoods.
Marcos -- Thanks for the list!
Maybe it'll help her chances.
Two Days, One Night didn't make it in a couple years ago and Marion still got nominated.
Elle is out!!??? O no, the movie might b too controversial for the still conservative Oscars committee....seriously worrying abt Huppert's chance of a nom
Much as I want Bening to get the last spot...I feel this might be Huppert last shot at an Oscar nom
If she doesn't get nominated, then I will scream SHENANIGANS!!!!!
The Jessica Chastains of the Actors Branch will come out for her. I hope.
if huppert doesn't get that nomination, that just makes it clear that they're idiot pussies.
Sad that <I>Elle didn't get the foreign-language shortlist, but I was sort of expecting that. The subject matter is controversial and outside of the critics circles, the Academy is generally conservative with their choices. Isabelle may be the last shot of the film to gain Oscar traction.
I like Elle and I have a feeling it will be discussed for years afterwards. Maybe it is a bit ahead of it's time, I don't know. But Huppert should be Oscar-nominated at least.
