Lupita In Space
Jason from MNPP here with today's best movie news -- with #OscarsSoWhite (side-note: I accidentally typed "OscarsSoShite" at first, ha!) dominating the movie conversation these past few weeks, and with all eyeballs slowly rightfully side-eyeing over to the studios themselves to see what they're gonna do about it, the number of projects that have been attached to Selma director Ava DuVernay has been a heartening development of the past few months, at least. She seems very much in demand. But she also seems very picky (thank goodness) - Marvel's Blank Panther movie? Notsomuch!
Anyway THR is reporting today that she's maybe going to direct a sci-fi movie called Intelligent Life, which Steven Spielberg's producing and Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow wrote, and in further "That's a Bingo" news the movie is set to star Oscar winner and baby fashion icon Lupita Nyong'o. YES I WANT THIS ALL OF THIS.
Intelligent Life is described as "the story of a low-level worker at the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs who accidentally makes first contact with a beautiful woman from another world." Three guesses who's the "beautiful woman from another world"? And thankfully, according to sources the alien is actually the leading role in the film. Let's just hope that Lupita's exquisite face is good enough, and we don't get any Star Wars style CG cover-up again. I wanna look at her, for goodness' sake.

So it could be as blunt and stupid as Jurassic World? Good to know. The other script DuVernay was circling, meanwhile, has a draft by a writer of Frozen. If she does this first? Bad choice, because, if it's as bad as Jurassic World and has no franchise prospects, DuVernay will have made herself part of the problem.
Yeah I was keeping this post brief but the Trevorrow connection worries me too, Volvagia. But a smart director can fix a wonky script, if there's something there to work with.
I was not prepared to open up this website and be greeted by such a giant, hi-res headshot of Lupita.
Good lord, what a breathtaking beauty.
Jonny - SAME.
Jason -- i thought she was playing the UN worker? or maybe i read the news wrong.
Great, Lupita gets a chance at a leading role in a live action film and she's playing a beautiful alien and not just, oh I don't know...a human being? This feels like only a half step to me.
Here's what THR says, and that last sentence is confusing:
"...about a U.N. worker in a department that was created to represent humankind in the event of alien contact. The man falls in love with a mysterious woman who turns out to be an alien. ...
Nyong’o will play the woman at the center of the alien contact."
Didn't DuVernay basically rewrite the script for Selma? Have confidence that she could polish it if Treverrow does turn in a clunker (god I hate him)
that aside
YASSSSS QUEEEEEEENNNNNNNNN
We may never be worthy of Lupita, but let's hope the project is
This article and this comment section exemplify everything I love about TFE.
Caroline & Chris, you took the exact words straight out of my mouth.
All hail Ava & Lupita! (Now, both of you, go make Americanah.)
It took way longer than it should have, but Lupita finally headlining a project is great news.
Has every forgotten that Colin Trevorrow helmed Safety Not Guaranteed? Did anyone see it? It was a clever, charming little film starring Aubrey Plaza. Yes, Jurassic World was clunky and unimaginative, but he's capable of much much more.
Agreed, Aaron. I don't think it's fair to hold Jurassic World against him. He was one of four writers on it and there's no way he wasn't given a very rigid lane in which to operate. It was his first big studio film and I wonder how much control he really had given the scope and expectations for this project.
Aaron and Kieran - that does seem to be the new model; enlist indie directors for franchise films to gain cred, and because they then have less bargaining power. Related: "Star Wars" deciding to cycle through many different directors so they 1) don't put all their eggs in one basket and 2) make sure no one person outshines Disney/the franchise itself.
That said, the script review I read for Trevorrow's next, "Book of Henry", sounded seriously worrying. That's apparently a passion project and might be a better indicator.
Hollywood's resistance to nonwhite women is ridiculous. Whoopi Goldberg's 80's output really is exceptional considering the obstacles built-in the system she was working under. She played roles intended for men (Bruce Willis, Burglar) and projects white actresses abandoned (Shelley Long, Jumpin' Jack Flash) and (Cher, Fatal Beauty).
Lu deserves a breakthrough where her face is prominently featured. The movie sounds very commercial and I can see it having legs outside the country.
I always wonder about the kind of back-end deals writers and directors make cuz if it was good, Colin and his Jurassic-cough-abomination-World compadres are laughing at us while spending their billions.
At any rate, I'm rooting for Lupita and/or Ava in ANY movie.
