Next up on "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"

How to play? It's easy. You:

1) watch the movie
2) pick your shot
3) post it with the "why"
4) and we link up.

Tomorrow Evening April 26th
THRONE OF BLOOD (1957)
Dir. Akira Kurosawa. Cinematographer Asakazu Nakai

Have we really not done a Kurosawa film in this series? My apologies. It's a Japanese classic with Kurosawa's muse Toshiro Mifune as a would be violent king with a scheming ambitious wife. Is it the best Macbeth movie ever made? Find out. (This is one of the gaps in my Kurosawa knowledge so I'll be discovering it with you.) [iTunes | Amazon

Tuesday Evening May 3rd
DEATH BECOMES HER (1992)
Dir. Robert Zemeckis. Cinematographer Dean Cundey

I need to talk about... Madeline... Ashton"

To celebrate the release of the new collectors edition BluRay (due April 26th), let's drink the potion with the vainglorious "Mad" (Meryl Streep) and vengeful "Hel" (Goldie Hawn) in this 'immortal' comedy classic, pun intended.  [Amazon | iTunesNetflix]

"Death Becomes Her" will make a perfect entry in this series. I can't wait!

Netflix Instant?

March 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDietrich

That Zardoz shot cracks me up every time.

March 15, 2016 | Unregistered Commenteradri

Dietrich -- i just meant you can stream them rather than renting the DVDs.

I'm sorry about the lack of a enthusiasm over Daredevil for HMWYBS. I really enjoyed doing it and enjoyed reading up on everyone else's choices. That said I'm excited to continue participating. There are some really fun and interesting films to watch.

March 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBrian

Ahem....YES!!!

March 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBrian Zitzelman

It's William Wyler who directed ROMAN HOLIDAY.

March 26, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterFilmarbeiter

To Kill a Mockingbird, please!

March 26, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMarcos

Filmarbeiter -- of course it is. ugh. dumb mistake on my part. typing too fast.

March 26, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I'm curious as to whether you mean Francis Ford or Sofia for "a Coppola."

Anyway, banged out my Zardoz entry early, scheduled to go up the day of the deadline at the usual place. I'm so sad Charlotte didn't get asked about this movie post-nom as opposed to the #OscarsSoWhite hubbub.

March 26, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAR

Why not switch one of these out for Freddy vs Jason? I know, that's a pretty trashy choice for one of these, but I think it's actually pretty good for a Vs film and you should probably Best Shot a Vs film while BvS is in theatres.

March 26, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

So much Harrison Ford...I am in heaven!

March 27, 2016 | Unregistered Commentersati

Volvagia -- i don't do slasher flicks.

March 27, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Nat: Then, maybe, add it in as a non participating supplemental?

March 27, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Just a heads up that STAR WARS FORCE AWAKENS won't be available to rent from Netflix until sometime in May. Might be limiting to some people who don't buy the movie.

March 29, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

NATHANIEL R: While I understand your aversion to slasher films I think it would be interesting to feature an horror film in this last season of Hit Me With Your Best Shot. Many entries of the past have tangentially encapsulated horror imagery, but only the Exorcist was a bonafide horror film, making this a rather unrepresented genre in this wonderful project.
I would suggest some of the more stylyzed italian works, like Suspiria, an unquestionable horror film that seems to have been created with the single intent of being celebrated in projects like this series.
Sorry if I'm not suggesting this at an appropriate time, I know there was a suggestion post a while ago but I forgot to mention Suspiria back then.

Also, here's my best shot article about Zardoz:

March 29, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermagnificent obsession

magnificent obsession: I would also want to see a respected horror film for this, but I suggested Freddy Vs Jason specifically BECAUSE it was a Vs movie.

March 30, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Witness is so wonderful!! I think it's Harrison Ford's best, period, but then I don't really care for franchises. I never play along, but I will watch along.

Where is Peter Weir's Honorary Oscar? Such an underrated director.

April 7, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Nat, you don't even put my entry on the To Kill a Mockingbird list. Not to be whiny here, just sayin'.

April 7, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

FYI, the cinematographer for Death Becomes Her is Dean Cundey. Super excited for that entry to the series.

April 7, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKeelay!

We all should talk about Madeleine Ashton. Like... always. Duh!

April 7, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSonja

That will be the best. Be prepared.

April 8, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJay Jay

I just had an AMAZING idea. Have you done any of the Christopher Guest mockumentaries? Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, or A Mighty Wind, or all 3 and let participants pick one.

Also, if you've already answered this, I'm sorry, but why are you bringing this series to a close? I do really enjoy it, and was excited to figure out how to do a screenshot so I could participate occasionally. I will be joining for Throne of Blood, and hopefully more later.

April 9, 2016 | Unregistered Commenteri/fwp

i/fwp -- it seems like people are getting tired of it. participation is less and comments are definitely down.

April 13, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

"First, we finish dinner". Then we can talk HMWYBS.

Probably a long shot, but if there are any readers in Central Iowa (other than me), Throne of Blood will be playing for free on the big screen at the Des Moines Art Center on May 1.

April 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLauraB

Laura -- thanks for the heads up. we love hearing about local things like that.

April 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Netflix is so damn slow. Won't be getting Thrones of Blood until tomorrow and unfortunately I'm going out of town for work. Oh well. It'd be the first film in a year I won't be able to post for HMWYBS. I'll still watch it later this week though!
