Happy Birthday Ann-Margret!

The kitten with a whip is still looking lively at 75.

One of my favorite Oscar nominations for Carnal Knowledge. One of the most out-there for Tommy. And the ability to look 25 and act 14, i.e., the crux of one of the very best Mad Men episodes.

The kind of actress they don't manufacture anymore.
And why should they ?
In a world of special effects, explosions...
Nobody is asking for a star like Ann-Margret.
Nobody is asking for a star at all.
Specially a doll face in a pin up body who can sing, dance,
play dramatic and comedic roles.
Not forgetting her amazing cartoon hair.

My wife's birthday is today, also... we both have liked Ann-Margret for years.

She's amazing, it's a shame she doesn't get the opportunities she should be but that's so true of most actresses of her age.

But she's a survivor, that 22 foot fall that nearly destroyed her face all those years ago would have ended most people's career but she was back on stage within months and has been charging ahead ever since.

She made a lot of crap, The Pleasure Seekers, Made in Paris, the jaw-droppingly awful The Swinger and the hooty Kitten with a Whip among them, before she showed what she could really do but even those she injects with masses of star quality.

Favorite films:

Viva Las Vegas
Tommy
The Return of the Soldier-She's almost unrecognizable and quite brilliant matching the level of her costars, Julie Christie, Glenda Jackson and Alan Bates.
Pocketful of Miracles
Who Will Love My Children?
Our Sons
