Louis Anderson won for Baskets, not Louis CK.

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered Commentern/a

I need Julia Louis-Dreyfus to take her name out of contention from here forward because this is getting ridiculous.

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

n/a -lol brain fart

Troy h -- right? but that category was just fucking beautiful

September 18, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

JLD is truly iconic in Veep, but there are better choices for Emmy at this point.

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBD

JLD's win is absurd. She simply cannot be judged the best when you have this lineup.

Dayum, Julie Bowen looks cute!

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

And people compain about Streep fatigue?..Even Streep can't win 5 times for playing the same role
I know the emmys are a different animal then the Oscars but every time I watch the emmys- I just keep thinking the Emmy voters are lazy :(

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjamie

Maybe now that she is the winningest woman in the lead actress, comedy category (with six total), she'll bow out.

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBD

BD -- it's been a VERY long time since Actors did that. I don't think it's in the modern awards character/business conscious celebrity

September 18, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Get it Sterling K Brown with the standing O!

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBD

Last mention for a minute, since my night is basically compete... Sarah Paulsen's win was undeniable and the biggest slam dunk for Emmy tonight. She elevated Ryan Murphy's material to master class status. And she looked stunning--congrats to her!

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBD

Didn't Candace Bergen step out since she won so many for Murphy Brown?

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjamie

Holy crap, anyone heard about this upcoming project?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1984119/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_1

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCS

Jamie -- yea, the last two actors (from my recall) who bowed out after multiple wins: (Bill Cosby and Candace Bergen)

September 18, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I think John Larroquette bowed out, too, but it was during the same era.

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Courtney B. Vance,
Sterling K. Brown
Sarah Paulson
for American Crime Story
were the only three I cared about winning -
and if they hadn't won, it wouldv'e been a travesty - the three of them were so phenomenal it's not even funny.

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterUlrich

Now Courtney B. Vance needs to win an Oscar to complete the acting triple crown.

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Maggie Smith wins...lmao! Does she even care?

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Suzanne --good to know.

Everyone -- maggie smith. lol.

September 18, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Maggie Smith has 7 triple crown awards. She's the first to do so.

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Hard to think Maggie Smith doesn't care. Don't they all have to give consent to be put into consideration?

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVanya

Yaaas Tatianna! Although I don't think the fourth season is as strong, I don't know what she was nominated for. I'm really surprised and pleased for her. Surely a result of the rules change..?

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBD

Tatiana!!!!!! Even though that was a great category with almost everyone being worthy, I am so excited Tatiana won! That was definitely NOT a sure thing and very much deserved.

So happy for Rami, too. He's fantastic as well.

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

Yay! Maslany an Emmy winner at last! I really would have loved to see Mtthew Rhys with an Emmy but Malek was worthy too. Back to Maslany, does anyone know what episode she submitted?

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNadir

YAS QUEEN JLD AND PAULSON! They deserved it so much it hurts.
But the "Mother" episode is totally snubbed. And I legit think hat Spacey and Wright should have won. Jon Snow and Cersei are ROBBED!
Congrats to Veep and GoT..

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

I believe Tat submitted episode 7, which is the episode where Cosima tried to implant a bug into her mouth and Sarah had a threesome before talking to ghost Beth, so can't say Emmys haven't broadened their view lol!

September 18, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrooooke

I am so happy that Abby, I mean Sarah Paulson, won an Emmy.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

For the most part, the winners were REALLY good tonight. Some deserved repeat winners and lots of really exciting first-time winners. Great night!

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

I really don't know how you could have picked in the Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series category -- Sterling was great, yet my mom and I were leaning toward Schwimmer. I wish they would have done a special Ensemble award for that show.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjakey

@broooke - LOL, I remember that episode. It was a good one! One good thing this season did was really dive into the backstory of Beth which really gave some great meat for Tatiana. Some real haunting stuff.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterhuh

Has anyone any idea why 'Transparent' is still labelled as a comedy? Is it only the fact that it has half-hour episodes rather than full-hour episodes?

I mean, I can see how it originally got there, considering the first thing many people saw from the show was the promotional image of Jeffrey Tambor in a wig, which made it somewhat look like "Let's see what shenanigans George senior is up to now" - having become the awards magnet is obviously is now, however, must mean that people (and thus voting bodies) are actually watching it. And anyone who watches this series must be aware that its tone fits much better into the same category as, say 'Better Call Saul', 'Downton Abbey' or 'House of Cards' rather than 'Modern Family', 'Master of None' or 'Unbreakable Jimmy Schmidt'.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMrW

Is anyone else convinced that Maggie Smith could put herself in contention for Downton next year even without the show on and still get a nomination?

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

Say what you want about the absurd number of times JLD has won the Emmy, but she deserves it. Seriously, her acting in Veep is just stunning. That 'Mother' episode alone, whew.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbeyaccount

Also disappointed that Lemonade didn't sweep its categories. Can anyone say that Carpool Karaoke was really that good in comparison to the arguably most important album of the millennium?

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbeyaccount

While I get that JLD's multiple wins cause fatigue, it's really hard to deny the quality of her work. If her submission episode was the one where Selina's mother dies -- truly career peak work -- it's hard to fault the Emmy voters. I think she has been over rewarded for weaker seasons of Veep, but I would have voted for her this year, regardless of how many Emmys she may already have.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterstarlit

I was screaming with delight when Ben Mendelsohn won Best Supporting Actor!! I wasn't sure it would happen but I was hopeful it would. Agh, it's wonderful to see his talent finally get more recognition. Kate McKinnon winning also had me screaming in delight.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMatt St.Clair

It's amazing that Rami and Tatiana won. It would have been impossible a few years ago.

I'm also very happy for Regina King. American Crime is great.

Obviously no one needs 5 Emmys, but I must say that Julia probably did her best work this season. The hospital and the funeral scene or the visit of the Chinese leader were hilarious.

P.S. Dame Maggie, we love you, but it was Maura's trophy.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Happy for Kate McKinnon but I find it weird she's nominated in that category , it's like comparing apples with oranges with the other nominees who play one character and she does dozens maybe more in a season

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRami

My biggest problem with McKinnon's win is that Kristen Wiig never did

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Why should JLD take herself out of contention? She did not personally break the Emmy system. If the TV Academy plays favorites, at least their current "favorite" is an actress in her 50s whose career has spanned decades and rode multiple winds of success. Whose show is consistently among the best on TV, and whose performance totally anchors that show.

If you don't think "Veep" is deserving of the acclaim it receives from the Emmys, then congratulations—your opinion is out-of-step with critics, viewers, and the TV Academy. It's your right to feel that way, but you've picked a tough road to hoe that will only lead to disappointment.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

Rami - But doesn't Tatiana Maslany also play many characters in her series? I like Niecy Nash a lot, but I was thrilled for McKinnon's win. I think she provided many of the funniest moments on tv this year.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I was really impressed with the Emmy winners this year. Even the repeat winners you can't say were undeserving (JLD probably should take herself out of the running next year, though, just to let the wealth get spread around, and because she's just operating on such a higher level than everyone else on TV right now that it's simply unfair)... mostly. I mean. MAGGIE SMITH?!? That' win was every single one of the TV Academy's worst tendencies (big celebrity, movie star, British, farewell to a beloved series/character. multiple wins, etc.) in a single win. But pretty much everything else you can quibble with, but can't really deny, especially since a lot of the wins were SO different from where they usually go. It was a pretty good show, too.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterdenny

Suzanne - point taken, and what Maslany does is incredible, but still that's a scripted drama vs a sketch show. I don't begrudge her the win, I like her a lot and think she's great but I find the category placement a bit odd. Didn't they use to nominate SNL performers in the variety category?

Speaking of Maslany, how great is that win, that's a strong line up she beat.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRami

"TRIVIA ALERT: All principle comedy acting wins went to female characters"

Well, mostly. Due to the absurd number of characters Kate McKinnon plays on SNL, you know a couple of men are going to be in the mix-- like Justin Bieber.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered Commentercash

The American Crime Story wins were all I needed, but I loved the Louie Anderson surprised for "Baskets."

While JLD's fifth win is ridiculous, I was happy to see that Emmys really chose based on the episodes this year. Say what you will, but JLD's episode submission ("Mother") was the best performance of the nominated episodes, especially with Ellie Kemper and Tracee Ellis Ross not submitting their best possible episodes. It felt less like a popularity contest and more like a passion vote.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterChris James

Ben Mendelsohn yay! Wow that he beat Peter Dinklage. That was pretty gutsy of the Emmy voters. Tatiana yay! Battle of the Bastards yay! Love Maggie Smith but I would have given that one to Lena or Maisie. Haven't seen Maura Tierney's performance but plan to catch up with that one day as I'm a big fan of hers from her ER days. The Thrones girls cancelled each other out and anyway why is Lena supporting? Come to think of it all of the three are major players. I don't get these categories? Agree that Transparent is not a comedy but Jeffrey Tambour deserves the win. Hard to categorise these half hour dramadies. Are they drama or black comedy and is black comedy even comedy? Never saw the OJ Trial mini-series (I'm an Aussie so it wasn't as much event television Downunder ) but Since Sarah Paulson is consistently the best thing about AHS, I was pleased to see her win. As an Aussie its always been a little frustrating watching the Emmy's because often we haven't had exposure to the network shows that were winning awards. These days with Netflix and Foxtel, shows such as GoT, Bloodline, OItNB, Transparent, Kimmy Smidt, AHS, Orphan Black (picked up this year by SBS) Mr Robot (on my to watch list) I was invested and glad to see some of my favs received the love. Btw the some great Aussies shows that could make it out into the big wide world. If you get a chance to catch the Kettering Incident then give it go đź‘Ť

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJoanne

Strongly agree with Hayden re: JLD. Although it may be monotonous to watch her take five in a row, I'm certain those wins will age well. Although the other nominees are strong and I wouldn't begrudge them a win (particularly Ross or Metcalf), and although the Television Academy does have a habit of returning to familiar favourites long after the well has run dry, it's impossible to watch Veep and not see that JLD is doing titanically impressive work in every single episode.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterASG

The amazing thing about JLD's wins is that she won under three different voting systems. She won three times under the tape submission/blue ribbon panel system, she won last year under the popular vote via preferential ballot, now she wins the popular ballot again but under the single/passion vote That's a remarkable statement about both her talent and her stature in the industry.

The change from preferential ballot to single vote was a major improvement, overall. I think the change in voting system is probably the main reason behind so many of the surprising wins (like Maslany winning Lead Drama Actress, and McKinnon beating Alison Janney in supporting comedy), the same way the tape submission system would every now and then reward unexpected people, like Merritt Wever.

Last year's system of preferential ballot + popular vote lead to one of the most predictable and boring emmy results ever.

I wish Lena Headey had won her category. That was the only result that truly disappointed me.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCarmen Sandiego

I was pleasantly surprised overall, based on everything from Rupaul to just the variety of winners this year that were different from before. For the Emmys it was pretty impressive.

AGREED @ Peggy Sue. It felt dirty to me when Kate McKinnon won...not that she's not a fun choice, but she's the first SNL member to win in the supporting category, and in my opinion, the fact that Kristen Wiig never won, even for her final season of SNL, was blasphemy.

September 19, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Cash: sorry to sound school-marmish, but "All principle comedy..." should be "All principal comedy..."
If it is a synonym of "main", then that should be PRINCIPAL. "Principles" are basic convictions or ideas that guide you. :)
