Finland's Oscar Entry and the European Film Awards Finalists

Finland has chosen its Oscar submission this year.

They've gone with the acclaimed black and white boxing drama The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki which is about a featherweight championship match between American and Finnish boxers in 1962.

That film is also in the finalist list for the European Film Awards. Nominations for the EFAs will be announced on November 5th. The EFA ceremony changes location each year and this year it will be held in Poland on December 10th. Because of competing eligibility dates you'll notice that each year's EFA list contains films from different Oscar seasons. The list of their finalists for 2016 is after the jump...

Almodóvar with this "Julieta" stars. Yes, they're on the list.

EFA FINALISTS
Nominations November 5th. Ceremony December 10th. (Last year's ceremony was Youth crazy with 3 awards for Paolo Sorrention's Italian film with British and American stars...If we've written about the film below its in bold - some of these titles are at TIFF this year so there's definitely more to come once we see them.

Who are you rooting for at this very early date? Which of these films are you eager to see?

"Letters From War" (Portuguese submission) is terrific, Nathaniel!

I think I am now going to go down (from Canberra) to the Melbourne Film Festival every year, because now I have seen FOUR of the foreign film submissions for 2016 (DESDE ALLA, MY LIFE AS A COURGETTE, SIERANEVADA and now THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MAKI). (If only I had made time for TONI ERDMANN!)

I will also be seeing TANNA at a Q&A session next month (see link below), so I am well ahead of my normal schedule of seeing as many of these as I can.

I would root for the Portuguese entry Letters from War by director Ivo M. Ferreira. It's endeed a Masterpiece.

Ed & John - Not sure if we watched the same film but I really disliked Letters From War, which to me looked like it was borrowing everything from the works of better filmmakers and the comparisons were not flattering for it.
All the critics I spoke with about it in Berlin were pretty unanimous that it was underwhelming as well.

I liked, not loved, the slow burn that "Julieta" is. It'll be nice to see it nom'd for Foreign Film but that's all the realistic chance it has to appear on Oscar night... that is, if they don't broad their mind and notice the outstanding work by Rossy de Palma in the Supporting Actress category. But I highly doubt Pedro will be back, this year, despite the excellent parties he's going to give.
