The Smackdown Returns: Which Years Should We Cover?

Last year's Supporting Actress Smackdown season was way too short with only two episodes so we're starting much earlier this year and aiming for at least 5 or 6 from spring to summer.

Stitch & Bitch with Supporting Actress Shortlists February through August!

Friday February 17th - Best Supporting Actress 2016
Nominees TBA. Since the smackdown is normally a retrospective we will probably approach this 'in-the-moment' event differently but we're still brainstorming.

Friday March 31st Best Supporting Actress 1963
We've been promising this year forever so we are going to force ourselves through it which should be easier than its been since its only three films! The nominees: Margaret Rutherford in The VIPs, Lilia Skalia in Lilies of the Field and three of Albert Finney's co-stars in Tom Jones: Diane Cilento, Joyce Redman, and '60s Oscar fixture Dame Edith Evans

But what shall we do for April through August (finale)? You get four choices come after the jump...

PLEASE CHOOSE ONE FROM EACH GROUP IN THE COMMENTS...

NOTE: We won't necessarily be doing the ones with the most votes (sometimes issues of scheduling or unavailability of films or preferences of guest panelist come into play) but this will at least help us decide. These are the years that haven't yet been done.

1987. I would LOVE to hear the panel's thoughts on Anne Ramsey's performance and nomination.

Group 4, although Groups 2 and 3 have some very good discussions in them.

January 18, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCal

1947 - 70 years ago
1965 - two from the same film
1981 - only if people can find Only When I Laugh
1997 - Julianne Moore!

Nathaniel, I believe 1985 was done by StinkyLulu, but I know it had only 2 panelists so I'd understand if you'd want to get a larger pool to discuss that one.

1946, 1957, 1994 and 2001. Now that I have finally seen every Supporting Actress nominated performance from 1936-2016, I must say I am excited to hear what the panel will say about 1957.

Pffft. I'm not gonna vote if the vote winning year won't be selected due to guest panelist preference. Kinda pointless no?

January 19, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAnonny

Hooray for Margaret Rutherford.

Also, hooray for Elsa Lanchester, so please 1957 (even although Marlene Dietrich was robbed that year. Robbed, I say.)

Anonny -- sorry. it does help me narrow down the years but if i can nab a celebrity guest and they want a certain year, i'm going there! ;)

January 19, 2017 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Patrick T -- readers brought that to my attention previously. I hadn't listed the year when we revived the series because i thought it had been done, but two people isn't really a "panel" so it might be worth revisiting.

I would want to say 46 but it's such a terrible lineup it would at least be nice for the panel to enjoy some of the performances.

1944, 1972, 1987, 1998 (I'm really keen on this year in particular, cause all of these women are stupendous actors and several of them are severely under appreciated or underused today - like Rachel Griffiths and Brenda Blethyn).

January 19, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

1951, 1970, 1986, and 2002, though narrowing down my choices helped me realize that practically any year would be fascinating, just those four especially. I'm so excited to finally vanquish 1963! It's been a long time coming.

January 19, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterNick T

Wait, nope, read the categories wrong. Great, now I'm part of the category fraud problem. My bad. My REAL votes are for: 1947, 1970, 1986, and 2002!
