The cast of The Help had a good showing this year.
"who inherits her "greatest working actor never to be nominated" title?"
Easy. Donald Sutherland!
Should have four noms: MASH, Don't Look Now, Ordinary People and JFK.
Greatest working actor never to be nominated: Emily Blunt
Awww, I have a feeling that Octavia will be voting for Viola!
Michael beat me to it!
Natalie Walker FTW BTW
Donald Sutherland and Ricardo Darin.
Hard question, but for greatest working actor without a nom I'd go with Isabella Rossellini or Gael Garcia Bernal.
"who inherits her "greatest working actor never to be nominated" title?
ACTOR:
Option 1 - Donald Sutherland
Option 2 - Gael García Bernal
ACTRESS:
Option 1 - Scarlett Johansson
Option 2 - Emily Blunt
Sorry Nath, but gotta share this post about the never nominated:
http://cinemaandpopcorn.blogspot.pt/2017/01/great-and-never-nominated-yet-greatest.html
Per Noah's tweet, I'm going to assume that people just didn't see 20th Century Women - yes, it got a screenplay nod, but I'm just going to think not ENOUGH people saw it for broader support.
Let me have my fantasy.
Donald Sutherland - shameful he hasn't been nominated. He's been legend for decades. Thanks to Guy Lodge for this tweet.
Well the answer to number one I think at this point must be Donald Sutherland but the runner up field is plentiful:
Colin Farrell
Steve Buscemi
John Goodman
Hugh Grant-sadly uncorrected today-although the category fraud bit him.
Ray Winstone
Michael Sheen
Sam Rockwell
Danny Glover
Women:
Gong Li
Ludivine Sagnier
Scarlett Johannson
Penelope Wilton
Harriet Walter
Juliet Stevenson
I'm positive I've missed many worthies but these were the first that came to mind.
Greatest actor without nominations: Mathieu Amalric
I'm pretty sure it's Carmen Maura who takes over for Isabelle Huppert in the "greatest living actor without a nomination" category.
"who inherits her "greatest working actor never to be nominated" title?"
HMMM.. Can we get convince Sony Pictures Classics to purchase whatever next movie Gong Li stars in?
Re: Guy, I think that it must be Fiona Shaw. Arguably the greatest stage actor living.
Topping the list of great living actors still nomination free:
Jeanne Moreau
Gong Li
Gael Garcia Bernal
Colin Farrell
Fanny Ardant
Mads Mikkelsen
Nathalie Baye
Irfan Khan
All from abroad. But among the deceased whose lack of nominations I feel most keenly, a couple of American names come to mind right off the bat:
the eternally under-appreciated Dana Andrews, who spent the decade from early 40's to early 50's giving one great performance after another(Ox Bow Incident,Laura,A Walk in the Sun,The Best Years of Our Lives,Daisy Kenyon,Where the Sidewalk Ends)
and Marilyn Monroe (who, in addition to the magic she dispensed on a regular basis, deserved to win for her first big starring role "Don't Bother to Knock" in '52 and her last "The Misfits" in '61. If ever a performance could be called sublime it was that one.
Jamie Lee Curtis.
I would also include Mia Farrow... but I kinda given up on her career.
Donald Sutherland in Ordinary People was devastating! It was even more devastating that he wasn't nominated for that masterpiece of a performance.
Yes it's Donald Sutherland. Though Emily Blunt must come really close this year.
Hugh Grant and Joel Edgerton should've been nommed this year.
The cast of The Help even has a better showing at the Golden Globes.
The overall snub of SILENCE hurts me. RT Nat's tweet. Even to think about it, Passengers has more noms than Silence lol
Kirsten Dunst
Scarlett Johansson
There are more obviously, and I'm only thinking of actresses right now. But these two are not only great, but have had opportunities to be nominated and have been passed over.
Greatest Living Actor sans Oscar nod? Obviously Anne Heche, but she needs to fire her agent first and foremost.
Joel Edgerton.
Greatest living actor never to be nominated:
Sam Neill.
And I agree with joel6 on Harriet Walter.
I also love ken's list: those are some of my favourites too. (Plus Ciaran Hinds).
Greatest actor never nom'd: SONIA BRAGA!
And coming up as terribly overdue: Cinthia Nixon, Ewan McGregor, Peter Sarsgaard
Anne Heche, yaaas! But also: Mia Farrow, obvs.
Oh, yes @ Cynthia Nixon and Ewan McGregor
Ha, I'm living for that Emma Stone shade. Even though I thought she was charming in LA LA LAND, I feel she doesn't get dragged enough for her yellowface. (I'm Chinese, so seeing my Asian sisters struggle to get roles and then It Girls like Emma Stone waltzing in and stealing work from them really chaffs my ass.)
Cris -- YES. Great cal. It's Gong Li.
SCARLETT JOHANSSON: "Lost In Translation" (2003),"Girl With Pearl Earring" (2003/04), "Match Point" (2005), "Her" (2013) or "Under the Skin" (2014)
SARAH POLLEY: "The Sweet Hereafter" (1997), "My Life Without Me" (2003) or "The Secret Life of Words" (2005)
EMILY BLUNT: "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006), "The Young Victoria" (2009), "Into the Woods" (2014) or "Sicario" (2015)
KIRSTEN DUNST: "Interview With the Vampire" (1994), "The Cat's Meow" (2001) or "Melancholia" (2011)
GONG LI: "Raise the Red Lantern" (1991), "The Story of Quiu Ju" (1992), "Breaking the Silence" (2000) or "Coming Home" (2014)
.
DONALD SUTHERLAND, PETER SARSGAARD and GAEL GARCÍA BERNAL
What about Kevin Bacon?
I totally agree about donald sutherland,Gong Li, Sonia braga, and Emily blunt
I thought of three more actors.Jeff Daniels,John Cusack, and Richard Gere. If we are talking all time living or dead I would throw the name of Myrna Loy into the mix
Totally agree with every last performer mentioned thus far, especially Donald Sutherland, my beloved Kirsten Dunst, and the great Gong Li, but the one that personally hurts the most (barring the departed Alan Rickman) is Steve Buscemi. He should have won for Ghost World - every time I think about Voight and Hawke sneaking into Supporting Actor in his place in 2001 it just hurts so bad. My top three favourites that the Academy has always ignored are Buscemi, Delroy Lindo and Ray Winstone.
Others worthy of consideration:
Stellan Skarsgård
Hope Davis
Emily Mortimer
David Thewlis
Charles S. Dutton
Paul Bettany
Kelly Macdonald
Parker Posey
Rade Serbedzija
Luis Guzmán
Peter Mullan
Koji Yakusho
Gina McKee
Molly Parker
Jane Adams
Robert Wisdom
Maggie Cheung
M. Emmet Walsh
Daniel Auteuil
Loretta Devine
Robert Carlyle
Celia Weston
Anthony Mackie
Sandra Oh
Olivia Williams
Guy Pearce
Bill Nighy
Shirley Henderson
Anthony LaPaglia
Ving Rhames
Tony Leung Chiu Wai
Stephen Tobolowsky
Edie Falco
Naseeruddin Shah
Campbell Scott
Julie Delpy
David Morse
Elias Koteas
Gary Farmer
Jeffrey Wright
Tony Shalhoub
Juliet Stevenson
Derek Jacobi
Steve Zahn
Giancarlo Esposito
Anna Friel
Mathieu Amalric
Robin Wright
Pruitt Taylor Vince
Mary-Louise Parker
Anupam Kher
Lena Headey
Homayoun Ershadi
Brendan Gleeson
Saïd Taghmaoui
Jennifer Ehle
Bruce Greenwood
Kerry Washington
Timothy Spall
Jane Horrocks
Archie Panjabi
Lena Endre
Also Om Puri, Katrin Cartlidge and Dennis Farina, may they rest in peace.
Also, how could I forget John Turturro!
Certain perennial un-nominees are always a role or two away from knocking it out of the park and Christoper Plummer-ing their way to the Oscar stage. I'm thinking of the likes of Donald Sutherland, John Goodman, Ewan McGregor, Peter Sarsgaard, etc. Character actors who've worked with everyone basically. It's easier for them to score, especially if they're likable dudes who've been at it for years.
But yes, Gong Li is the correct answer. Isabella Rossellini, paging David O. Russell again.
