Already throwing curve balls I see, Golden Globes

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered Commentertom

First two awards were a mess...they picked it up with Atlanta and Tracee tho.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Did not see that supporting actor upset coming.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRami

HFPA confirming their star-fucking reputation out of the gate. Look for Tom Ford to win director.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBD

Bening is wearing an Oscar Best Actress winner gown....gold, statuesque...

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Is Aaron Taylor-Johnson a star? I couldn't tell you anything he's done, beyond Nocturnal Animals. If they wanted to give it to a star, they'd have gone with Bridges. It seems they just really, really liked the film.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I was rooting for MAHERSHALA ALI , but I`m not upset at all with Aaron win ( he`s quite something in Nocturnal Animals and the movie is just great) ..... Love when the Globes go against common opinion. Bridges, really ? The best in scene in Hell or High Water is Chris Pine and he wasn`t even nominated.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterEder Arcas

Viola just won her Oscar.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Why can't Viola Davis be nominated in Best Actress?

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterHowards End

Atlanta is not really a comedy, in the ha-ha sort of way.
But it is utterly brilliant.
And Zazie Beetz - why the fuck wasn't she nominated?! -deserves to become a huge star!

And, of course, Sarah Paulson derserved to win as well, for her nuanced and sharp work as Marcia Clark.

The Aaron Taylor Johnson-win is ridiculous.

Andrew Garfield better not win!
The only reason he got nominated is because it's makes for great TV - to have the ex-lovers Emma Stone and him in the same room.
Mel Gibson better not win either!

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterUlrich

Ryan Gosling! Thank you HFPA.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

"Ryan...Gosling". For a second there I thought Goldie was gonna say "Reynolds". Gosh I wish we could've gotten a shot of Ryan Reynolds face during that announcement.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJordan

That was a great speech by Ryan Gosling.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMDA

Aaron Taylor Johnson wins, Thandie Newton loses. The Globes suck.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

I looooved awkwardly seeing John travolta on stage trying to dodge ex scientologist Nicole Kidman!!! That was everything!!

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterdave

@Dave yaaas. And what was that queen wearing? Not what I would have chosen to tamp down the rumors.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBD

I haven't seen The Night Manager but have heard great things, particularly for Olivia Colman (who is always good, a truly great underrated actress).

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Oh man, the La La Land-backlash has already been building for some time - but the backlash will only become bigger and bigger when the movie sweeps all the Globes and all the Oscars.
Not just backlash for Emma Stone, but also for Chazelle, and the movie.
We've seen it so many times before - a movie, a filmmaker, an actor
is applauded and hyped during early award-buzz,
but as the movie/actor/director win more and more prizes, the inevitable "overrated"-monster will rear its ugly head.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterUlrich

I'm admittedly not a fan of La La Land, but that screenplay is not the best screenplay by any means. Thin characters, no stakes ... I mean, no. Just no. Moonlight should've taken that.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

While I agree that Moonlight and MbtS are better screenplays, I think La La Land's screenplay is actually quite good.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

I enjoyed La La Land immensely, but that screenplay had no business winning, particularly over that of Moonlight. If anything, it's a triumph of directing over most of its other parts, including the music itself.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

I predicted Hiddleston and I'm still surprised. Can't believe The Night Manager snatched three Globes for acting.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

May I just say that Paul Verhoeven's speech after winning the foreign language film Golden Globe and singling out Isabelle Huppert was to me already a major win for la reine Isabelle.

Also, the Steve Carrell/Kristen Wiig bit was the first hilarious moment in the program.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterOwl

Riz Ahmed or Courtney B. Vance should've had that. Ugh.

I love the Globes for not being predictable, but geez.

And no Evan Rachel Wood??? Waaaah.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Those Kristen Wigg and Steve Carrell stories about seeing an animated movie for the first time had me cracking up. They should have been hosting instead of bland Fallon.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGil C.

Don't you just hate it when the winner is the only one in the category you haven't seen yet? Keeps happening tonight. #thecrown #goliath #nocturnalanimals

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Meryl Streep is tearing the shit out of this speech.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMDA

The Night Manager put me to sleep...and The Crown is yet more award pandering to British actors. Hollywood thinks people with a British accent makes them more sophisticated and better somehow.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGil C.

Streep / Davis 2020

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterdave

Chile, Meryl was preacher, the stage her pulpit, and the audience her parishioners. Praises be.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Suzanne: He was Kick-Ass and MCU Quicksilver (though not great, still a better performance than Fox's version, but without the showy "Time in a Bottle" moment from Days of Future Past), but I don't necessarily like that we're probably going to have to add "Academy Award Nominated" behind his name after this year.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

And that's how she's going to score #20.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

Paul Outlaw: I'm watching The Crown. It's good enough, writing wise, for it's type of thing, but Matt Smith is really not on his A-game here and the visual approach is VERY 2010s in the worst way.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

OMG! Meryl Streep was perfect.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterbrandz

Streep's speech was pitch perfect. There's so much to be said for her performances over the years, but I just want to appreciate her commitment to social justice.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBD

Did anyone notice how the text in the Meryl Streep clip package said that she's been nominated for 18 Oscars? How on earth did they make that mistake?

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

I guess the clean sweep tonight is now a foregone conclusion...

Volvagia: I need to watch at least one episode before voting for the SAG Awards.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Mel gibson and Vince vaughn looked like their eyes could've shot daggers at Meryl during her speech...maybe they are republican?

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterdave

Streep- using her time to slay the truth! ❤
That will be a Globe speech for the ages. With the election and loss of Carrie Fisher- it was all too much.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

....I think La La Land might win the globe for best picture, guys.

I know, such a hot take.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

jeez Brie Larson was not a fan of Afflecks win....

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered Commenternottoss

Neither was I.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

Isabelle!!!!!!! I'm sorry I doubted you HFPA! Now on to Oscar! She can do it!

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

Fuck you, NBC. Commercials more important than Best Actress. Bullshit.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

I knew Isabelle was gonna win. Too bad her speech was awkward af lol.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Again, white men get away with everything......

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Very interesting that Huppert won. So it's most likely Huppert vs Stone for the Best Actress Oscar statue. Portman was viewed early on as a strong contender, but now it seems like am honour to be nominated. I would surmise that Negga and Adams could take the remaining slots. What do you think will happen if Viola sneaks in to this category?

Anyhow I am happy for this result as I like when new blood wins the award.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip

I've been saying for some time that Huppert was a lock for a nomination. I think this makes the race for winner more interesting, though.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBD

Of course Brie is pissed off at Affleck's win - she's a feminist - and if Affleck
did what he's accused off, then she's intitled to be pissed off all she wants.
But since we don't know for sure he's guilty, she should cool it.
