Beauty vs Beast: Bonnie & Clyde's Last Stand

Jason from MNPP here continuing the talk of last night's big events - specifically the biggest, the corker, the one for the ages, when Warren Beatty rammed the wrong envelope into Faye Dunaway's hands and just made her deal with it. (Something tells me Annette Bening is the one who calls the plumber and writes the checks in that household.) Or was Warren just too scared of Faye to speak up? Don't fuck with her, fellas - if Faye was eyeballing me like that I might crumble to dust too.

Or perhaps it was a Russian conspiracy that will be solved when we finally see Donald Trump's tax returns? So many possibilities, and it's clearly a bit rude to lay any real blame for a dumb mistake at the feet of Faye & Warren, who were after all standing there in the hot glare of two billion eyeballs with a ticking little paper time-bomb in their hands.... but here we are.

PREVIOUSLY For Valentine's Day we wiped our brains clean with the quirky romance of Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine, and of course Kate Winslet won but I'm proud of you guys for making it closer than it could have been - she only took 58% of the vote. Said Scott:

"Clementine. In real life she would drive you insane. Onscreen you can't tear your eyes away."

Team Faye, but barely.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Faye Dunaway is how all of us hope to age. Gosh what great TV last night. Absolutely amazing!

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTony T

I'm going to do my best to remember them as Bonnie and Clyde instead of as the unwilling, doddering participants in the Great Oscar Snafu of 2017.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterOwen Walter

Team Faye for sure ... at least she took some action . So Warren Beatty clearly saw he had the wrong thing and he was completely unable to deal with the situation. He looked like a rookie at his first awards show.

I keep wandering if La La Land had actually won , we'd have found out or not that hey read the wrong card :-)

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered Commenteradelutza

I can't work out if he wanted to show her the card so she could see what it said and so reassure him that something wasn't right.
Or if he just threw her under the bus and let her read it out knowing full well it was wrong.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJB

This'll give Faye loads of work.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMARKGORDONUK

The women always win these polls but I really hope Warren takes this one because: (a) he's WARREN BEATTY, and (b) he actually knew there was a problem and seemed like he wanted to confer with Faye about what they should do. Faye seemed to have an Elizabeth Taylor "GLADIATOR!" moment.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

LOl, I just don't understand why the stagehand didn't put a stop to it IMMEDIATELY once the wrong title was called. Isn't someone suppose to rush the stage right away and correct it? Instead the whole team assembled on stage, speeches were given, and then they decided to rush the stage. Idiots

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

TMZ is saying that Faye was beefing with Warren about who would read the winner in rehearsals...well, she got what she wanted! Haha

She is fab, but you know she chewed everyone out last night and this morning. I really hope someone like the Coen Bros or Paul Thomas Anderson casts her in something. She deserves another chance.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBia

Team Warren. Because he´s the only one who gets shit for it. Everyone is reporting he announced the wrong winner.
He didn´t know what to do. He was uncomfortable and Faye and the audience pressured him. Just imagine it was the other way round and Faye was the one lost with what to do with that envelope, nervous and shaking and Warren was the one not noticing her cry for help.
He never left the people on the stage and took action to explain the situation. And come on, the chance was pretty high that La La Land won anyway....

However, both of them are human. It wasn´t their mistake.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered Commentertherealmike

I think I thought the same thing as JB -- Warren was like wtf and asked Faye for her input, but instead she just blurted out what she saw. He is 79, he thinks he's seen everything, and so it is just so unfair to have to deal with a wrong awards card. And so I'm Team Warren (plus for Reds)!

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

Team Warren - he noticed & he took responsibility.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

I completely adored the idea of reuniting a legendary movie couple like they did with Newman and Taylor in 92. Now it will never happen again.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

@ Peggy Sue

I think we might still get
Streisand/Redford
Streep/Redford
Streep/Kline
Curtis/Kline
Curtis/Cleese
Ryder/Depp (although...)
Ryder/Slater (less risky)
Turner/Douglas
Foster/DeNiro
Foster/Hopkins
and so on...

But probably no couple from before the '70s.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Under the circumstances, I feel bad for both of them. They were given the wrong envelope and both of them are pushing 80. It's easy to say what they should have done, but they did not anticipate that they would be given the wrong envelope to read.

LOL at Annette running that household, but it's probably true.

The people who look bad are PWC and the stage hands. They are supposed to review and confirm the envelope is right before the presenter goes on stage. One or two people fell down on the job, which sucks for La La Land folks already on the stage ready to accept their prize.

Maybe Oliver Stone will make a film about it.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJono

You'll see Douglas and Close reunited at some point too

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermatt

Team neither of them.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterEz

I will never stop laughing at Warren Beatty knowing something was wrong and just throwing Faye under the bus to read it. Lmaooooooo

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJeremy

Team Faye. She ia the first female to announce the best picture winner

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTheBoyFromBrazil

I don't care. I'm happy Moonlight won and pissed Huppert lost. I'd like to think the collective passionate energy front Huppert caused this on a cosmic level to forever cloud her win. Lol

Outside of this event, strictly on a Bonnie & Clyde level, Faye of course. All the camera angles were in his favour, I'd assume since he was one of the products, so she had to bring it 100% and she did.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRoger

They both get an F. Warren for not speaking up and Faye for not seeing Emma Stone was on the card.

Faye needs to star in another movie now

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterjaragon

No one will hire Dunaway. She has a reputation for being impossible to work with.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMax

I don't understand why people are saying "it's not their fault!!! They were given the wrong envelope!"

LOL, they're old, but not senile. They can still read. It clearly said Actress in a Leading Role - Emma Stone for La La Land.

I will cut Faye some slack because it seemed like she just thought he was being foolish, so as soon as she saw "La La Land" on the card, she just said it.

But Warren Beatty should never be allowed to present anything again. He clearly knew it was wrong, and instead of saying something, just allowed it to happen.

I get it, maybe he was trying to show her to be like "lol, this is why I'm stalling," but even after she said it, he still allowed it to happen.

I don't know. Maybe I'm being harsh. I guess at the end of the day, the person that handed the wrong envelope is really to blame.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

They shld totally be invited back nex yr to annouce best pic counted by EY!! 😂

hey.pple its not their fault. Brian Cullinan IS the one who f**ked it up!!!

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

TheBoyFromBrazil - Aside from the fact that she didn't exactly announce the best picture winner, that isn't accurate. Diane Keaton, Barbra Streisand, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and even Michelle Obama have presented Best Picture at the Oscars. There are probably other women as well.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Beatty's shifty reaction to realizing that there is something wrong with the card, especially when he slowed down proceedings to check with the prompter and look toward the wings was strangely reminiscent of his Bulworth character... his eyes darting all around to track his own assassin and call it all off.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAbzee

Faye is not fab, she is evil. Though a great actress at one point.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBruno

Team Faye all the way for me, too. It's the fault of the stagehand that handed Warren the wrong envelope. But that said, Warren isn't a kid and this isn't his first rodeo. As soon as he saw he had the wrong category card all he had to do was say so. Something along of the lines of, "Uh, I believe I have the wrong category. The card says Emma Stone for Best Actress." Then someone would have given him the right card and there wouldn't have been this weird awkward snafu.

Instead, he totally acted like he was senile, fumbling with the card and looking lost and confused. I know he's no spring chicken and that mental acuity fades as we age, but sheesh, you'd think he had entered some sort of odd mental fugue state and his brain slipped away and he wasn't even able to solve a simple problem and speak up about it.

Faye could be forgiven for not noticing that the card was wrong. The way Warren was fumbling around, it totally looked like he was being coy and dickish and trying to generate suspense by not reading out the winner. Him handing her the card was passing the buck and not taking responsibility for a simple problem he could have easily solved. She was impatient to announce the winner after Warren's fumbling and can be forgiven for seeing 'La la land' and thinking that was the best movie winner.

By the by, if Warren can't even manage to solve a simple problem like this, then I shudder to think how he "solves" problems that occur on the movies he's directing and/or producing.

February 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBlinking Cursor

Meryl didn't even open the envelope when she was announcing for DDL in Lincoln, but this happens.. LOL

February 28, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Does Faye REALLY have such a terrible reputation? How many of today's premier directors worked with her (or even worked at all) during the 70s?

I really enjoyed seeing her on stage, demonstrating that she looks great and can deliver a line as well as any other actor - would love her to get another leading role in a dynamic movie. How long ago was Barfly!?

February 28, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterkermit_the_frog

Females are usually branded difficult if they have an opinion,I think Faye just has bad manners and a huge ego,so obviously I love her.

February 28, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMARKGORDONUK

@Markgordonuk - I've always liked her, though have never really been aware of her off-camera behaviour!

I sometimes randomly remember that Bonnie & Clyde was her DEBUT. What a role and what a performance to kick-start her career...

February 28, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterkermit_the_frog

Bette Davis said she was always late and rude to cast and other staff, she's notorious for it,check out her telephone rant, classic Faye.

She's a gr8 Actress but all the surgery made her unemployable for major roles bit like Meg Ryan a few years ago who is also notoriously prickly.

February 28, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMARKGORDONUK

Have to pick Faye. She is a legend and I love her. I love Warren too, but I agree with those who say he saw the card first and should have signaled to the stage hand right away. Faye was impatient because it was going on too long. But neither are at fault. This should never have happened. No matter how terrible this fiasco, they both looked great and got to present Best Picture. How very cool. They should always only have classic Hollywood stars presenting Best Picture. That needs to be a rule.

This debacle would never have happened if Isabelle had rightfully won Best Actress. Then when Warren saw ELLE on the card he would have known it was handed to him in error.
