Thoughts I Had... whilst staring at "mother!" teaser poster

Oh my my my. The first poster for Darren Aronofsky's secretive October release mother! has arrived and it's after the jump in all its disturbing detail along with the thoughts I had as they came to me without self-censorship...

When I saw this online I saw Jennifer's face first and was all... how pleasant, a painted poster with perhaps a plaintive look. Jennifer Lawrence's face has always been somewhat opaque so the expression is wonderfully non-revealing.

...and then I scrolled down and shivered once I realized it wasn't a bouquet YIKES. (In my defense I wasn't wearing my glasses)

I'm so hungry right now.

So, it's a horror film? With a painted poster? Brave of them because horror fans can be so literal even though the genre is strongest when its metaphoric. Remembers just a smidgeon of the way they went all florid and crafty for the poster to Stoker.

[Interrupted reverie] WAI--WHERE IS MICHELLE PFEIFFER'S NAME !?!?!

I understand leading with an image of Jennifer Lawrence as she's the presumed lead and the most bankable of the film's five stars (the others being the goddess Pfeiffer, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Domhnall Gleeson, but Michelle's name not even on the teaser poster? wtf.

PR Dept to Artist: "Make it like a cross between a Pierre et Gilles photograph and a fantasy paperback cover but SOFTER. And less gay"

So hungry.

I only met Darren Aronofsky once at a party with lots of alcohol but he was very friendly and seemed to have a sly sense of humor. I feel reasonably certain he smiled when he saw this poster, especially all the delicate fussiness around his name.

Big medium rare burger.

Red is Pedro Almodóvar's favorite color.

[Mental Flash to...]

[And then to...]

It's great that the title is all lowercase with an exclamation point. Exclamation points in title are awesome. Think I Want to Live! or Moulin Rouge! or Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

The synopsis on IMDb continues to haunt me with its useless vagueness - I'd rather know nothing than this little!

Centers on a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.

I'm loving the RePfeiffal so much already and it hasn't even really begun yet.

And I bloody ♥ this poster. Planning to obsess over it.

Sick joke to release this poster today!

HAPPY mother! DAY

[15 minutes later]

Wait what...

Who dat in the photo?

And why is this flower dripping???

I'm suddenly not okay.

Could we maybe be getting another similar character poster with Pfeiffer in it? I hope that's the case

I really like this poster but the lack of Pfeffer and Harris's name irked me too, with Pfeiffer it's just bizarre isn't she playing a titular character? Hopefully we are getting trailer soon

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered Commentersati

OMG this poster is PERFECT. How wonderfully bizarre. Aronofsky films can just be oh so delicious.

It is a teaser poster so I have no problems with only two cast members being listed and only the lead, and most bankable shown. Let he fussy poster will a cast members and pictures be on the main poster. Teasers are meant to tease and this one is just about perfect.

Great idea to release it on mother's day. I should've expected that!

My interest has just peaked more than it already was!

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Jennifer Lawrence looks like she's going to open a home for Peculiar Children.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDuncan Dykes

Leads in Aronofsky movies die--good news for me since I hate the principal lead.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Uh.... I've got nothing.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

some people just hate

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterK

3rtful,You are so predicatble,I thought to myself "I wonder how long it will take him with a snide comment",your as stale as the Alien franchise.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Is anyone else picking up vague Suddenly, Last Summer vibes?

All these oppressive plants, the flesh offering, ideas of sinister mothers.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBJT

markgordonuk - i thought 3rtful's comment was kinda funny tbh and I like JLaw quite a bit. wasn't offensive at all. it is fun to see major stars die sometimes, i.e. got lots of enjoyment out of Edge of Tomorrow that's for sure.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAnonny

Will J-Law be the Snow White to Michelle Pfeiffer's Queen?

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterremy

Honestly, I think this is a bit of marketing genius. I understand your dismay with regards to her co-stars however it's geared to JLaw fans who are younger. Bound to relate that all important buzz.
Black Swan walked a knife-edge of camp/drama, it will be interesting to see if this effort can do the same.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

I thought it was going to be about her (J-Law) and Domhnall Gleeson's character.

So the couple is Lawrence and Bardem then?

Happy Birthday, Cate Blanchett <3

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

I love when /3rtful makes snarky comments and others get upset by it.

Great poster. I'm now interested.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJordan

A very graphic poster ; is the movie aimed at the Fangoria crowd?

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterjaragon

They painted a picture of Lily Rabe and said it was Jennifer Lawrence. Cause that don't look like Jennifer Lawrence. Which is alright cause I don't habe the feels when I look at her.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMorgan.

Amazing poster. Will they keep it?

I'm happy for Javier. He needs a good movie.

My biggest concern is that Michelle will get to play a variation of Hershey's role in Black Swann.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

@Peggy Sue: In the same vein, a very SMALL role for Michelle is very possible with this cast. Aronofsky films generally tend to just do a deep dive into the minds of a character or two; not multiple.

We should not be expecting juicy complicated roles for the entire, talented, cast here. Hopeful at least a couple juicy/complicated scenes that are more about her than the lead character(s) are given for her to play.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAnonny

I've been obsessing over this poster for hours now and somehow missed the small details you picked up on, so kudos!

It's beautiful, but there's also something off about it (beyond the obvious gory stuff) - like how JLaw looks like JLaw but also kinda like Cate Blanchett. This one is sitting high on my "most anticipated" list for the year.

May 14, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterthefilmjunkie

JLaw looking like Julie Andrews. The poster disturbed the fuck outta me the first time I saw it, but now it just confuses me. WHAT'S WITH THE HEART, ARONOFSKY?

May 15, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCal

To /3rtful lovers. I would enjoy sarcasm or "snarky remarks", but if you line up all past posts of his,. You see he is not trying to be funny He hates many things with an idiotic passion.

Take a look at some old posts.

May 15, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterK

I pray everyday that Streep and Lawrence will be nominated next year, simply to upset ...

May 15, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBey

First thought: WHERE IS MICHELLE PFEIFFER'S NAME?
Second thought: Er, that's not where the heart is.

May 15, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

I don't know... The poster looks interesting, but Lawrence looks kinda Pike here...

May 15, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSonja

Is this the best poster since Moonrise Kingdom? Black Swan is one of my favorites of the decade, and I am a J.Law fan, so I am very excited for this movie...

May 15, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Darren Aronofsky might be able to get Jennifer Lawrence to give her first good performance since Winter's Bone.

May 15, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterKim

@Kim Boy!! Do I agree with you 100%

May 15, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterK

Wonderful poster. I'm not trying to be snarky or a "hater" but this actually makes Jennifer Lawrence seem interesting.
