Prime in October: Pushing Daisies, Gods and Monsters, The Cell

Time to play Streaming Roulette. Each month, to survey new streaming titles we freeze frame the films at random places with the scroll bar and whatever comes up first, that's what we share. No cheating.  What does Amazon Prime offer us for free viewing this month? Let's survey...

Wasn't your old dog named Digby?

Pushing Daisies (Seasons 1 and 2)
In case you wanted something actually worth binge-watching. This series is so perfect, from its macabre plots, to its quirky romance, to its colorful design, through its curiously moving musical numbers. I miss it so much. Maybe we should watch the entire series again?

You sound like your father.

The Cell (2000)
I have never seen this. But even though people say you should (given the visuals) I have probably had enough serial killer movies in my life. I'm saving whatever small amount of energy I have left for that genre for the second season of Mindhunter.

Who's we?

La Mission (2009)
Did any of you see this? It's pretty good. Benjamin Bratt is a macho dad who has trouble accepting his gay son.

[scary music]

Deadly Blessing (1981)
Look, Sharon Stone before she was famous! It's a Wes Craven movie. There are a lot of horror films streaming for October though not a lot of good ones.

Hanna's here with our refreshments. Could you get the door?

Gods and Monsters (1998)
Awww, love this one. Sir Ian definitely should've won the Oscar. I haven't seen this in a long time. I wonder how it holds up? Also look at that amazing set decoration.

It's not about knowing your enemy. It's all about knowing yourself.

Bulletproof Monk (2003)
I think I saw this because of a hard crush on Seann William Scott. But I remember nothing. You?

I still like your ass. I'm crazy about your ass.

Bitter Moon (1992)
Roman Polanski thriller. Hugh Grant and Kristin Scott Thomas are both in this (!!!) though they didn't pop up in this scene (sigh).

[no dialogue]

An American Werewolf in Paris (1997)
Noooo. I didn't need to see a rat while skimming movies. I was hoping for that scene starring Tom Everett Scott's naked bum. I believe this movie is very bad but I only saw it once right when it came out so perhaps I am wrong. At the very least there's Tom at peak cuteness and the always delicious Julie Delpy. There's also Julie Bowen before Modern Family for 'before they were famous' kicks.

Palindromes - that's something you spell backwards and forwards the same way.

Frankie & Johnny (1991)
You guys I totally forgot that Nathan Lane was in this. But streaming roulette is not being kind today because how did I not land on a Michelle Pfeiffer scene? Denied! She's very good in this, miscasting complaints aside. But also Kate Nelligan (pictured) was terrific as her coworker friend.

STOP TALKING TO ME! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!

Blue Steel (1990)
Okay I've officially had it with streaming roulette today. No Jamie Lee Curtis scene for this Jamie Lee Curtis vehicle? Boo! But Kathryn Bigelow directed this cop drama so check it out if you haven't.

Okay that was a lame episode of Streaming Roulette. Apologies! If we were able to choose what was streaming in a given month, you'd actually see some shake ups in the standards streaming rotations. They really should hire guest programmers, shouldn't they?

Despite never having seen the movie myself I encourage you to watch The Cell for the visuals alone. The Japanese costume designer from Bram Stoker's Dracula did the costuming and MJB from Secrets & Lies has a supporting role in it.

Let's make a list of shows I miss: "Dead Like Me", "Wonderfalls", "Pushing Daisies". Man, I wish I knew what these shows had in common, LOL.

I have watched "The Cell" several times. It's a very compelling movie, and Jennifer Lopez is the main reason, but the costuming and the design are ridiculously amazing. I think some people are thrown by the gorgeous design and direction, but this is one movie that actually managed to have style AND substance. I love this movie.

One of the few TV traditions I have is that I watch Pushing Daisies from front-to-back every year and bake a pie (or two) to eat while watching. Love that show!

The Cell!! Such a great movie! The Japanese costume designer is Eiko Ishioka. She also made costumes for Bram Stokers Dracula, The Fall, Immortals and Mirror Mirror

The movie is really great. Some images are taken some famous painters as well. The Cell is a gem of a movie

The Cell is Lopez's best film, thevisuals are very disturbing, you feel like your in a crazy mind at every moment,JLC is the queen of underrated.

Pfeiffer is flat out Amazing in F and J but beauties always find love and happiness don't they?

I coincidently am midway through a re-watch of Pushing Daisies. Just started Season 2. I've been having trouble getting to sleep at night in these trying times, so some feel good binging is in order.

Such a great ensemble! This was my introduction to Lee Pace and continuation of my romance with Kristin Chenoweth. Also love Swoosie Kurtz and Ellen Greene as the mermaid aunts. I'm sorry I haven't seen Chi McBride or Anna Friel in much since the show ended.

Pushing Daisies is fantastic! But honestly, there is so much good TV currently in production, or being sent to the US through streaming from other countries, you could pick a dozen today to chat about. Unfortunately, there are no sites like this one covering TV that are as fun to read (and post).

Frankie & Johnny is one of Michelle's best performances. I love that the movie brings out her goofiness and vulnerability so beautifully. And yes, Kate Nelligan is so wonderful in it...I still miss her, even though I've heard she's bananas.

Seann WIlliam Scott was, and still is, so hot.

Here for all the love sent to Pushing Daisies and The Cell.

"The Cell" is a visually sumptuous horror movie and Jennifer Lopez is terrific in it

Agree with the love for "The Cell."

Tarsem directed REM's video for "Losing My Religion" and recreated one of the iconic set-pieces in the film -- it's actually the screenshot you linked to above.

@Nathaniel

Don't worry. Gods and monsters remains one of the most towering Hollywood movies about Hollywood and God Damn Male Class of Acting!!!

Honestly, Ian should had won at least three Oscars:

Leading: Richard III, Gods and Monsters
Supporting: LOTR The Fellowship of the Ring

October 1, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterJon

@ Tommy - oh yes, these three shows. I once spent hours on the internet trying to find out if there is a region 2 DVD for Wonderfalls

October 2, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterIvonne

I echo the love for Pushing Daisies and The Cell!
It's sad that PD has only two Seasons... but on the other Hand, at least both are amazing forever and don't have the fate of running out of ideas.
The Cell is definitely J.Lo's best film, though Out of Sight isn't far behind. But still, she's great, even though the costumes and visuals are the true stars.

Pushing Daisies is pretty easily my favorite show and Olive Snook is a national treasure.
