Here is "Where is Kyra?"

Chris here. It has been over a year since Where is Kyra? kicked off Michelle Pfeiffer's return to cinemas with a very quiet debut at Sundance and we've been awaiting word on a release ever since. We've had two big releases and Emmy/Globes nominations since, but this once had fallen beneath the cracks. Kyra's mixed response met a very unforgiving distribution landscape, but it appears we'll finally get our eyes on the film this spring.

From the looks of the first trailer, Andrew Dosunmu's Mother of George follow-up looks to be as laguid and moody as we've been promised if a touch more starkly engaging (our Murtada was impressed, particularly with our beloved Pfeiffer). After a trio of supporting turns, it's about time we get to see the actress reemerge with a larger showcase for her talents, even if it is on a smaller canvas.

Mini distributor Paladin Films has the releasing duties, so we're probably heading towards a tiny release. Regardless, we are psyched to see Pfeiffer back in a leading role that puts the focus squarely on her abilities. Where is Kyra? opens in limited release on April 6!

I think it looks good. I think the best we can hope for is maybe some year-end critics mentions, maybe an Indie Spirit nom and hopefully some auters see it and are inspired to give her that one juicy role that will finally get her back to the Oscars in a couple years.

Pfeiffer looks phenomenal. Hope it will open in Italy too.

I'm just glad this film is actually seeing the light of day! Pfeiffer and Dosunmu isn't a collaboration that I could've expected, but I've been intrigued ever since the film was announced.

I am happy to report that Pfeiffer is excellent in it (i've just seen it this week) but i fear people will despise the movie which is almost purposefully offputting and distant from the audience.

This is great news.

I am so happy that you liked her in it, Nathaniel. Let’s hope this film opens in Brazil soon.

I saw it at the same screening Murtada did way back when and honestly I think of the movie at least once a week, which I wouldn't have expected at the time, my reaction having been mixed. It sticks.

Please, Nat, I would love to know your thoughts on Pfeiffer’s performance in The Wizard of Lies. I don’t remember reading anything concerning that in your blog. I apologize if you have already mentioned something about TWofL and, mainly, on Pfeiffer’s performance in it.

February 16, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMarcelo - Brazil

Would you really say a performance of hers was bad?

February 16, 2018 | Unregistered Commentergrrr

I am sooo looking forward to this! Pfeiffer looks stunning in this and I love when she gets the chance to dig deep.

I need more Pfeiffer in my life.

Who insisted on shooting this shit in the dark? And to add insult to injury drain the color as well.

February 16, 2018 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Bradford Young is the DP.

Every time I see this title, I want to shout KYRA SEDGWICK IS RIGHT THERE, GUYS! CAST HER!

grrr - like every actor she's not always great. they all have their hits and misses. But the best actors (like her) are super more often than not, no matter the material.

This comes out on my b-day, and I couldn't ask for a better way to celebrate. #PfeifferPforever

(Nat, when will you be bringing back her pfilmography retrospective? Us pfans enjoy that series.)

February 17, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

She's only been awful in The Story of Us.

February 17, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Pfeiffer was dreadful in Murder On The Orient Express, worst I’ve ever seen her.

She is usually fantastic but can overdo it at times.

February 17, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterHuh

Pfeiffer has NEVER been awful only GREAT :)

Pfeiffer has NEVER been awful only GREAT :)

February 17, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMA

Pfeiffer was the BEST thing in Murder On The Orient Express :)

February 17, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMA

PFEIFFER can do no wrong bitter people like to judge :(

February 17, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMA

I will say that considering how extraordinarily variable her filmography has been (she is on record as saying that she has no real sense of what will or won't be successful) Pfeiffer has IMO been one of the most consistent actresses I can think of, at least in terms of beautiful leading lady careers (there are many character actresses who are amazing in stuff that gives them fewer opportunities). I almost think Pfeiffer is a character actress who just happens to look like Michelle Pfeiffer, she's at her best when channeling anger or severe depression, which is why I think a part like Kyra seems made for her. And she doesn't showboat those emotions either like an acting exercise. AND she manages to consistently overcome second rate material. The mediocre HBO movie is a great example of this. It's nothing special and DeNiro is doing DeNiro but Pfeiffer does exceptionally small scaled detailed character work that pays off in moments like when she leaves that voicemail to her children of when she has her final visit in jail.

I don't know that I feel as highly about her as Nathaniel but I do find people who want to brush her off to be very frustrating because she's just done to much exceptional work and has rarely if ever been straight up bad in anything. And as an individual she's done nothing at all to earn much scorn.

STREEP is the queen of over acting and over doing it in every performance she does 😩

February 17, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMA

Michelle Pfeiffer is a natural comedian, wish she would just laugh on screen more. Married to the Mob, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Batman Returns, and One Fine Day always bring a smile to my face. She so warm and just breathtaking when she laughs. Love her.

February 17, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterJack for Streep

YES! YES! YES!

February 17, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterBrad

@MA. What in the world does Streep have to do with this blog???

You doth protest too much!!!

February 17, 2018 | Unregistered Commentergrrr

I hate titles with question marks

February 17, 2018 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Looks awful and maudlin.

February 18, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMarie

That looks like a very interesting film, and Pfeiffer looks great from the trailer.

@Nathaniel, glad to hear she actually was, but I hate that the movie might be alienating. This could have gotten her back in the Best Actress conversation. Maybe it still will?

February 18, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

Well, I think this movie looks GREAT! Too bad it's limited release will probably preclude it opening in my area. Hopefully it appear on dvd SOON so that those of us who DON'T live in "major" cities will get to see the return of an AMAZING actress and her pairing with one of the best actors EVER.
