Happy Oscar Day !

by Nathaniel R

How's your enthusiasm level? Mine is somewhere in the middle. I'm excited about how wide open the non big-six categories are, that Rita Moreno is reportedly going to show up to present an award in the exact same gown she wore when she won her Oscar for West Side Story (one of the all time best wins in supporting actress). But this is also the day where Lady Bird (my personal favorite) will lose everything. Oscar giveth. Oscar taketh away.

TONIGHT
I will be live-tweeting the ceremony tonight, if you'd like to follow along and we'll have lots of ceremony review posts on Monday and Tuesday (and probably Wednesday too)

In case you missed it - Final Predictions (article) and updated Oscar Charts. It's also your last chance to vote for reader's choice in Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress, and Actor !

Just posted
- FiLM BiTCH Awards gold, silver, and bronze medals in all the Oscar correlative categories

And -

For the second year in a row, I won't be watching it. I work early tomorrow so I have to be fresh, plus given my predictions, I rather skip it...

My enthusiasm is so low that I won't be watching the Oscars this year. Watching two of my all-time favorite actresses, Laurie Metcalf and Sally Hawkins, clean up during the critics awards and then lose all the televised prizes was too disappointing.

One of the most predictable and boring oscars ever!
But i like your medalists so much nathaniel !
Great taste! Well done 👏🏻👏🏻

I kind of get the sense this could be a 2002 type year with a lot of upsets. Most of the favorites don't seem quite that solid. McDormand, Oldman, Janney, Rockwell have dominated the precursors, but you could legitimately have Robbie/Ronan, Chalamet, Metcalf, Defoe win. And that would be amazing. And you could totally have a wildcard like Dunkirk or Get Out win picture.

I agree... I am hoping for upsets galore ... not happening, but one can hope.

Air kisses for everyone!

I'm hoping for Upsets too, but mostly looking forward to the technical side, as that has the suspense going into it. (No, really, thanks Guilds.)

And for Deakins to finally win. (don't curse him now.)

And I'm certain we will have some politically charged moments too.

I still have the gut feeling "Get Out" will win with 2: Screenplay and Picture. It could happen!

Happy Oscar night everyone! Like other comments, I'm hoping/daring to dream that there could be some big upsets in store. But if there aren't...that will be OK too.

I'm excited to watch the show, but not so happy to see some of my faves go home empty-handed. Is this what its like for sports fans who watch the Super Bowl even though their favorite team isn't playing?

March 4, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterthefilmjunkie

How did such an exciting and nail-biting awards season turn into such a boring Oscar night? I just do not understand. In the cultural climate, did every awards granting group just decide to give awards to the same people to avoid upsetting? I just do not get it.

Jamie: Oscar night hasn't happened yet!☺ There may still be surprises!

Nothing will ever top last year's last-minute disaster.

Will this also be the thread where we can commiserate in real-time?

March 4, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMDA

You know what I've been loving these last 3 years? Best Picture has been up in the air! Like every other category has been locked up since January, but that one.

March 4, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterChris

I too am pumped about Rita Moreno - LOVED her anecdote on the red carpet about being convinced Judy Garland would defeat her on Oscar night!

Gurl! One tweet in the first 45 minutes of the ceremony is not live-tweeting!

Hi Nat, great choices o FBA winners! I'm quite surprised Call Me din get into your top three?

My choice wld be Call Me, w Lady Bird a close 2nd.

Actress-wise, it is such a solid yr for actresses that I tink I'm gonna go w five mentions:

Saoirse is my winner, w Vicky Krieps n Sally the runner-ups, n Emma Stone n Margot Robbie round up my top five.

I dun ustand y is Janney the only one rec'ving the lion share o attention, when Robbie's transformation is THE revelation o I, Tonya.

McDormand is at an honourable 6th. I dunno abt u but only the Deer Scene gets to me. The rest o time, she's just so plain unlikeable!!

Actor: Chalamet is my choice w Harris Dickinson a v close 2nd.

Supp Actress: Laurie Metcalf, of cos! Runner-up: Manville

Supp Actor: Dafoe. Runner-up: Stuhlbarg

Dir: Greta Gerwig!!! Runner-up: PTA
