Hi, Nathaniel. I recently finally watched Being Julia and was thunderstruck. I have always admired Annette Bening, but over the last several years, mostly due to her amazing work in 20th Century Women (how did she not get an Oscar!!), she has become a favorite. I cannot wait for The Seagull.
Last week I met the incomparable Christine Lahti at her book signing. She was so lovely and wonderful! She told me the greatest story about Sidney Lumet. I want to have drinks with her!
Oh and as always--Jennifer Jones.
Where'd You Go, Bernadette?
I need a trailer or failing that an image, something that tells me it exists.
I really don't want to watch Airport again and you don't really love us.
I woke up thinking about Parker Posey and her character in Scream 3, sooo good.
Also, i saw again last weekend Never on Sunday (1960) with Melina Mercury, such a delight, I love greek cinema classic and contemporary.
Why was Christian Bale overlooked for Best Actor this year, the ending had me tearing up,Rosamund Pike was great too,the release date I think killed the film and his chances and for showboating and THAT totally unbelievable scene on the train.
*Melina Mercouri - the autocorrect changed her last name to the planet's name (which in greek represents Apollo btw, nerd, lol)
I woke up upsets this morning remembering how underrated Kirsten Dunst is, my sullen mood has not gone unnoticed haha
Z -- every day mood!
Mark -- yes, the last weekend of month release is a death knell for most films.
Peggy Sue -- i really do love y'all and I never ask you to commit any torture that i myself am not committing with rewatches ;)
Saw Where is Kyra? Over the weekend and I’m just really annoyed Pfeiffer’s excellent performance will go largely unseen and she likely won’t get the recognition she deserves for it. Maybe critics groups will rally around her in the fall but I doubt it. She’s so great in the film.
What's it going to take for a Michael B. Jordan Best Supporting Actor nomination? I think a groundswell movement could make it last.
Not that this is cinematic in the most literal sense, but I've been watching Big Little Lies on DVD and wondering how Nicole Kidman managed to syphon all of the awards heat away from Reese Witherspoon, who should have won something for her magnetic work. It's a bit of a shame.
I don't know if this is necessarily related but I'm super sad cos Drew/Fisti deleted hi blog :(
Mike Leigh's Peterloo!
I heard a salacious piece of gossip from someone who might have worked on Will & Grace back in the day ... remember how Parker Posey played Jack's boss and was kind of a beyotch? Well, apparently, the writers specifically wrote the character as a beyotch because they thought PP was a beyotch. They didn't want her to have to stretch.
I don't care if it is true. I still love her. Party Girl got me through my 20s.
Just read Lee Grant's biography - such an interesting life! And what a great, undervalued actress. Does anyone have other biography recommendations?
I keep pondering that "what four movies define you?" challenge and changing my answer. It's really difficult.
Will Hereditary be a good as everyone has led me to believe?

i was listening to a podcast. "Desert Island Discs" - reaaly quite wonderful. an interview with Gregory Peck. i have gone back and been reading aobut him, looking at his pictures. he is really quite something special - so much integrity. He's up there with Cary Grant in terms of looks. The final question was - what would you like to have on a desert island. He said "Sophia Loren." I recommend that series of podcasts....some great stars. Natalie Wood, Burl Ives.
Two things:
1) Ocean's Eight needs the best reviews or will flop in the Box Office.
2) Elizabeth Taylor-Montgomery Clift and the three great movies they made: A Place In The Sun (1951), Raintree County (1957), Suddenly Last Summer(1959). Three different moments of their relationship, three different directors and studios and notably her professional maturation and the effects of the car accident in his face and acting.
Wondering about the idea of a movie adaptation of "Homeland" TV series with Scarlett Johansson (who's more "actress" and less "bombshell" these days) and Michael Fassbender playing both Carrie and Brody.... can you imagine how crazy / thrilling / sexy it would be? David Fincher directing, please! xD
I also think that if I drive to Paris and I introduce myself to Arnaud Valois we will be married by the end of the year.
Anxious for Infinity War. If it flops it could be a big deal for the genre, kinda hope it does. Im sick of all these superhero movies.
Christian Bale surely was terrific. He has this strange excentric Brit vibe like Daniel Day-Lewis and that will bring him his second Oscar very soon, I think.
That said, best actor last year was Jeremy Renner.
whoops. I posted my answer to this on the Cate/Cannes thread.
The Innocents, Deborah Kerr n Jack Clayton.
Such a brilliant tense beautiful Gothic psychological thriller but O so underrated n under appreciated.
Martha Scott's Best Actress nominated performance in Our Town. Uneven performance, but the movie itself (like the stage play) really knows how to pull my strings. Grew up in a small town and man it hits home. The streaming copy available on prime was pretty terrible in quality. Seems like a good candidate for preservation/restoration.
Oh! And William Holden so young he's unrecognizable!
Also on my cinematic mind, this line from Sunset Boulevard "Mabel Normand and John Gilbert must have swum in it ten thousand midnights ago"
Does it get better than Sunset Boulevard? I don't think so.
Timothee chalamet , i want him to star in a french film
I genuinely love Isle of Dogs. Wes Anderson has his second masterpiece after The Royal Tenenbaums.
I watched film stars don't die in liverpool, and liked it very much, annette, jaime bell and julie walters were amazing. Also watched you were never really here: it was painful to watch but really loved the way joe killed all those badtards, the scenes with joe and his mom were my favorite. Justice for joaquin.
Some things...
Deciding if going to see Javier Fesser's "Campeones" this weekend or monday. It has good to great reviews, but I think it may be not my cup of tea, or the kind of film I should see right now.
Wondering if Anna Paquin will be back to Oscar again after 25 years, thanks to Martin Scorsese's next. It's not like she's never been close again in some films with Oscar potential before, most notably "Margaret", for which some say she should have won a 2nd, but have to admire how she didn't get awards obsessed and despite some mistakes, is building a solid career and has worked with one of the most impressive list of directors, a former child actor got to... Zefirelli, Spielberg, Campion, van Sant, Spike Lee, Ballard... and now Marty.
Puzzling my mind with infinite theories about Infinity War, specially the fact that most people is forgetting/ignoring, that Fantastic Four is NOT a Fox property, so Marvel never needed to talk with Fox to get them back (but with the weaker in comparison Constantin Films)... and how watching some of the properties in the Fantastic Four deal, already popping out in the MCU (the Watchers, Ego and Skrulls) indicate that either in Infinity War or A4 we will be seeing Fantastic surprises all around. Buzz has been slowly building to a big reveal (Stark tower turning into Baxter Builiding, the Silver Surfer Metacritic leak, John Krasinski hinted HOW interested he is in playin Mr. Fantastic, and Marvel choosing the word "FANTASTIC" in the tweet that announced the new release date, and also republishing the comic book after a long hiatus destined to piss off Fox's distribution rights).
Still looking for a place to retire where there are a lot of film screens and movies are shown in their original language (with English subtitles if they're not in English). Is it really only NYC and Paris? I can't afford either!
Watched "American Honey" I really liked it. Such a rawness to it yet gorgeous. it didn't seem like 3 hours. Were her fellow magazine hustlers actors or real kids? I was disturbed how attracted I was to Shia Lebouf.

I'm thinking about two things.
1) I saw YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE yesterday and it floored me. It's hard to call it a "favorite" but I definitely think it's a masterpiece that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. So many elements have stuck with me - two (maybe?) veterans holding hands and singing Charlene as one dies, another incredible Greenwood score, when Nina screams "JOE!" in one of the few moments of clear, unambiguous dialogue. Joaquin Phoenix managing to fully be new people every time I see him. Incredible.
2) This is a deep cut, but I can't get this moment from GONE GIRL out of my head, it makes me laugh so much. It's when Lisa Banes as "Amazing Amy"'s mother is at the press conference informing the audience how they can help, and she has to say "Drury Lodge." It's such a hard word to say anyway but there's this subtle undertone of DISGUST at the hotel's very existence that comes through in her line reading. It's like a dirty word coming out of her East Coast elite mouth for the first time and I love it so much. Maybe it's just me, but I'm glad Fincher does hundreds of takes.
Travis -- no, it does not!
It's probably only me, but I'm so disappointed that the next Almodóvar will star Banderas I think I will skip it. I just can't with him.
Don't you think it's so odd that the media is all over the story about Michelle Pfeiffer selling her Northern California mansion? I can't recall another celebrity's house sale making really big news like this.
Also, I'm loving the rumors that Ant Man and the Wasp will primarily be about the rescue of Pfeiffer's character Janet Van Dyne.
Also, where is the article you promised about making sense of the rave reviews Pfeiffer is getting for Where is Kyra? Are you like many people who think she has no chance of getting an Oscar nomination?
