We ❤️ Viola

So proud to have been a fan since 2002! Viola Davis gets the cover story in the current Variety as she gears up for her Widows debut at TIFF. Can't wait to see it. But damn, that Best Actress race is getting crowded. (Kris Tapley even suspects Olivia Colman will go lead

I disagree. Colman is the type of actress they're totally ready to vote in the supporting category but never in the lead. Remember Tyrannosaur?

I love a crowded Best Actress race! Go Viola and Widows.

@PeggySue I see your point, although Tyrannosaur was a much lower profile film than The Favourite seems to be. I still agree Colman would have a much better chance in Supporting, but I’ve already read different sources (Varity, VF) who’ve mentioned rumoura that they might got lead with her campaign, which seems gutsy!

Agreed that there's no reason for Colman not to go Leading if the film is great and she steals the show - huge industry popularity, national (UK) treasure with multiple BAFTA wins, hot new star of one of the biggest TV shows in the Western World...

Age is her only obstacle. Well, that and Glenn Close.

Tyrannosuar is a terrible example - she didn't even get BAFTA nominated, which speaks volumes about that campaign (ie. there wasn't one)

I love how you all consider Lanthimos mainstream now!

Tyrannosaur not getting nominated speaks volumes of Bafta's voters laziness.

She's my winner in 2011 better than all the nominees and on a par with Theron's original YA work but they got to have those biopic performances of famous people,I consider 2011 to be on of the worst years ever.

I fell in love with Viola watching “Solaris” with George Clooney. Running the gamut from “who’s that?” ,“this is really interesting”, “omg, this actress is great”, “I want to watch everything she’s ever done”, “I want to watch every new thing she does”.

You might have to bump Natalie Portman up in your actress predictions following these Vox Lux reviews.
So exciting that this year is looking so strong!!!

I feel secure in Davis securing a slot in the final five.

Queen Viola

Oh brother with the definitive predictions. No offense, but everything you say turns out to be wrong.

September 4, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterJAL

I am betting against Viola getting in this year.

Hate to say this but have a sneaking suspicion that AMPAS, unlike with Octavia Spencer, might be cool to Viola Davis now that she has won an Oscar. It may take something more galvanizing than Widows to get her back in the lineup. Hope I'm wrong though.

All I can say is there will be a whole lot of crying at TFE when Viola and Nicole are not nominated for best actress in genre revenge/crime movies.

September 5, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterThe Rock

The Rock -- not if the 5 who make it are more deserving ;) the only Best Actress films we've seen thus far are TULLY, DISOBEDIENCE, EIGHTH GRADE, WHERE IS KYRA, THE WIFE, CHILDREN ACT, and those performances are all pretty fine so it's going to be a nailbiter... at least for my personal awards :)

September 5, 2018 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

She’s guaranteed to win a lead Oscar. She category frauded her first, but I understand the need to get any Oscar considering their reluctance to Black women lead. She probably didn’t realise she is Streep level in the need to award status, so she’s a guaranteed future two time winner. Congrats Viola!

September 5, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterLeshawn

To me, only Glenn Close and Charlize Theron deserve the nominations based on the movies I've seen with potential best actress in them (Tully, The Wife, Where is Kyra, Children Act, Disobedience / didn't watch Eighth Grade though). Both Rachels were good, so was Thompson and Pfeiffer but I didn't get a WOW unlike with Close and Theron. Regarding Kyra, there was so much close-up and focus on Pfeiffer compared to Sutherland that I felt I was watching straight porn where you don't see much of the actor but only the actress/ female star. LOL.
Yes I hope Viola gets nominated again if she's truly great in Widows.

Y'all are forgetting Toni Collette. She deserves this nod, horror bias be damned.

September 5, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

brookesboy -- EEK. I meant to include her in my first half list.

September 5, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterNathanielR

Yes, Viola will get a Best Actress one day. She's that good and she'll likely deserve it when she does. No idea if she'll be nominated for Widows, but it's probably too soon for her to win again anyway.

I hope Colman is nominated to whatever category seems most accurate. She's been overlooked for awhile here, partly because she mostly does TV.

Haven't seen many performances yet, but I wasn't totally bowled over by Theron, though I generally like her a lot.

Collette indeed was amazing and I think she has a great chance at a nom.
