Yes, No, Maybe So Top Gun: Maverick

by Murtada Elfadl

It’s been almost 34 years since Top Gun (1986) made Tom Cruise one of the biggest stars in Hollywood history. And now he’s back in Top Gun:Maverick. We don’t know if anyone was asking for this very belated sequel but it’s coming in 2020. Apparently this time he is the trainer, training a new batch of Top Gun fighter pilots and mentoring his friend’s son (Miles Teller). Yep Teller is playing the son of Anthony Edwards and we assume Meg Ryan. Will they make a cameo?

Let’s give the trailer the Yes, No, Maybe So treatment...

Yes

  • I am very pro Miles Teller. Loved him in The Spectacular Now (2013) and Rabbit Hole (2010) and thought he gave the best performance in Whiplash (2014) so it’s exciting that he’s leading this film as Goose’s son, Rooster. These names though!!

  • The younger pilots are played by up and comers we’d like to see more of. Glen Powell (Set It Up), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place) and Jay Ellis (Insecure)

No

  • Top Gun was a ra ra Americana jingoistic film that could only come out and become a huge hit in the Reagan era. And I guess we are living in similar times when you think about who occupies the White House.

  • Will the homoerotisim be back? We hope so though there’s scant evidence of it in this trailer.

  • Who’s Jennifer Connelly playing? Hopefully not a supportive wife / girlfriend. And there doesn’t seem to be any other women. They should’ve made this a hybrid sequel of Top Gun and G.I.Jane and brought in Demi Moore alongside Cruise. The A Few Good Men (1992) reunion no one is expecting.

Maybe So

  • Tom Cruise is lots of fun in the Mission: Impossible movies. Or is it just the movies themselves? He was magnetic in the 80s when the first film came out but will this late revist work? Based on the tanned look he’s sporting in his first reveal here we are dubious.

  • Remember when Jon Hamm was trying to be a movie star? Those hopes were dashed after Million Dollar Arm (2014) and Keeping Up with The Joneses (2016) flopped. With this and Richard Jewell, where he plays an FBI agent, he seems to be finding a niche of playing supporting authority figures. Hopefully that turns into meaty supporting roles soon because we like looking at him.

What say you? Are you ready to fly into the danger zone?

BORING!!!!!

So he jumped on a sofa and since then the biggest movie star in the world, can only do the obvious action picture and no longer leads a movie...

The 80s were the best decade for unintended homoeroticism. See Nightmare on Elm St 2 for further evidence.

Creepy Scientology crap for deplorables.

"And there doesn’t seem to be any other women."

Not true — I did catch a few glimpses of Monica Barbaro as the pilot "Phoenix."

Wasn't this supposed to come out two or three months ago?

Jono - That attitude has been very helpful to the Democrats in the past. Keep it up.

I wish Jon Hamm a long career, even if these recent roles may seem repetitive (remember him in The Town?)

Regarding Top Gun, I couldn’t care less. I’m a NO.

Er, no. Tom Cruise has aged very well since Top Gun; the film's premise though? Not so much.

Also, Miles Teller is a d-bag, Murtada. Hate to break your plate, but it's true.

Mareko - I know about that interview. I never want to meet him IRL, I just like him as actor.

December 17, 2019 | Registered CommenterMurtada Elfadl

The director Joseph Kosinski really knows to use the big screen so it might be work paying for IMAX of course apart from the "Mission Impossible" movies Tom has made some real crap like "The Mummy"

December 17, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

Yes on Connelly. Justify that Oscar.
Maybe so on Hamm. What happened here?
No on Cruise.

December 17, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterFadhil

Really miss that time when CRUISE was a daring actor, he has so much more to offer (Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Collateral, Vanilla Sky ) this is gonna make tons of money though, seems like a feel good movie, shallow but well directed and acted; CONNELLY is just too good for the movies she chooses (He's Just Not That Into You, Stuck in Love, Aloft etc) but she's a remarkable actress and I adore her.

I'm going to skip "Top Gun Maverick" because the producers removed the Taiwanese and Japanese flags from Maverick's flight jacket which is politically correct BS. My friends and I discussed it and we found lots of others on social media feel the same way. We see it as the producers of this movie have abandoned two of our allies in the name of Chinese appeasement. That makes the movie a loser right out of the gate because the US Navy bows to NO other nation. Bad decision Hollywood.
