Golden Globe Nominations!

by Nathaniel R

Hollywood was up bright and early today for the Golden Globe Nominations. How cute are Dakota Fanning's glasses? As per usual they began with randomness (Best Song, Best Screenplay, some TV categories) before saving some biggies until the Today Show at 8:15 AM. We'll have much more coverage later but for now just a few quick notes since it's an information avalanche.

FILM

Drama

  • 1917
  • The Irishman
  • Joker
  • Marriage Story
  • The Two Popes

Netflix really campaigned with the HFPA as you can see hogging 60% of Best Drama. This is a tough break for Ford V Ferrari and Little Women which both seemed like Globes-ready movies...

Musical or Comedy

  • Dolemite is My Name
  • Jojo Rabbit
  • Knives Out
  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
  • Rocketman

This is the first time in recent memory where they've skipped the loudest musical (Cats!) in the Musical category. Perhaps their private screening didn't go well.

Actress, Drama

  • Cynthia Erivo, Harriet
  • Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story
  • Saoirse Ronan, Little Women
  • Charlize Theron, Bombshell
  • Renée Zellweger, Judy

Shockingly normcore. Usually they have one surprise.

Actress, Musical or Comedy

  • Awkwafina, The Farewell
  • Blanchett, Where'd You Go Bernadette?
  • de Armas, Knives Out
  • Feldstein, Booksmart
  • Thompson, Late Night

It's just one man's opinion but I actually thought Dever was stronger than Feldstein in Booksmart. Nevertheless they're a duo so happy for Booksmart for this attention. Awkafina's to lose obviously, right?

Actor, Drama

  • Bale, Ford V Ferrari
  • Banderas, Pain & Glory
  • Driver, Marriage Story
  • Phoenix, Joker
  • Pryce, The Two Popes

No De Niro is the biggest curveball that the Globes threw this morning but the Best Actor category IS a bloodbath this year with so many viable big star contenders.

Actor, Musical or Comedy

  • Craig, Knives Out
  • Davis, Jojo Rabbit
  • DiCaprio, Once UPon a Time
  • Egerton, Rocketman
  • Murphy, Dolemite is My Name

The widely expected list.

Supporting Actor

  • Tom Hanks, A Beautiful Day
  • Anthony Hopkins, The Two Popes
  • Al Pacino, The Irishman
  • Joe Pesci, The Irishman
  • Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time

Two-thirds leads but what can you do? Lotta starpower there.

Supporting Actress

  • Annette Bening, The Report
  • Margot Robbie, Bombshell
  • Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers
  • Kathy Bates, Richard Jewell
  • Laura Dern Marriage Story

One of the very few surprises this morning: Annette Bening! She's really terrific in the movie but The Report's profile had shrunk so much. Bates and Bening both weren't nominated at the Critics Choice this weekend so perhaps there's some wiggle room for candidates this year and Oscar might surprise?

Director

  • Bong Joon Ho, Parasite
  • Sam Mendes, 1917
  • Todd Philips, Joker
  • Martin Scorsese, The Irishman
  • Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time

Though we didn't predict him we did  have expect that Philips would show up here. SHOCKING though that the Globes didn't opt for pitting happily coupled Baumbach (Marriage Story) & Gerwig (Little Women) against each other since they love the celebrity drama

Screenplay

  • The Irishman
  • Marriage Story
  • Parasite
  • The Two Popes
  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Four campaigning as original with Oscars, plus The Irishman

Foreign Film

  • The Farewell (US)
  • Les Miserables (France)
  • Pain and Glory (Spain)
  • Parasite (South Korea)
  • Portrait of a Lady on Fire (France)

Very high profile category this year. The msot the Globes ever match the Oscars in this category is 3/5 but it's usually closer to 2/5...  Only 3 of these are eligible for the Oscars in the same category though (Les Mis, Pain, Parasite)

Score

  • 1917
  • Little Women
  • Motherless Brooklyn
  • Joker
  • Marriage Story

Wish we'd spoken it loudly so as to be prophetic but we half expected that if Motherless Brooklyn showed up anywhere this season it would be in Best Score since it's so jazz-obsessed.

 Songs

  • "Beautiful Ghosts" - Cats
  • "I'm Gonna Love Me Again" - Rocketman
  • "Into the Unknown" - Frozen
  • "Spirit" - The Lion King
  • "Stand Up" - Harriet

Just as suspected. It all songs that will bring bonafide superstars into the live broadcast (even though they don't perform) plus a song from Frozen 2.

Animated Feature

  • Frozen 2
  • How to Train Your Dragon 3
  • The Lion King
  • Missing Link
  • Toy Story 4

They went all blockbuster sequels/remakes plus Missing Link. No sense of adventure, HFPA. Come on!

TV

Drama Series

  • Big Little Lies
  • The Crown
  • Killing Eve
  • The Morning Show
  • Succession

The Morning Show's big campaign paid off.

Comedy Series

  • Barry
  • Fleabag
  • The Kominsky Method
  • Marvelous Mrs Maisel
  • The Politician

Limited Series

  • Catch-22
  • Chernobyl
  • Fosse/Verdon
  • The Loudest Voice
  • Unbelievable

Comedy Actress

  • Applegate, Dead to Me
  • Waller-Bridge, Fleabag
  • Lyonne, Russian Doll
  • Dunst, On Becoming a God
  • Brosnahan, Marvelous Mrs Maisel

Comedy Series, Actor

  • Michael Douglas, Kominsky Method
  • Ben Platt, The politician
  • Bill Hader, Barry
  • Paul Rudd, Living With Yourself
  • Ramy Youseff, Ramy

Drama Series, Actress

  • Jennifer Aniston, The Morning Show
  • Reese Witherspoon, The Morning Show

  • Jodie Comer, Killing Eve
  • Nicole Kidman, Big Little Lies

Drama Series, Actor

  • Brian Cox, Succession
  • Kit Harrington, Game of Thrones

  • Michelle Williams, Fosse/Verdon
  • Helen Mirren, Catherine the Great
  • Merrit Wever, Unbelievable
  • Kaitlyn Dever, Unbelievable
  • Joey King, The Act

 Actor in a Limited Series

  • Chris Abbot, Catch 22
  • Sacha Baron Cohen, The Spy
  • Russell Crowe, The Loudest Voice
  • Jared Harris, Chernobyl
  • Sam Rockwell, Fosse/Verdon

  • Alan Arkin, Kominsky Method
  • Kieran Culkan, Succession

  • Stellan Skarsgard, Chernobyl
  • Henry Winkler, Barry

  • Meryl Streep, Big Little Lies
  • Helena Bonham Carter, The Crown
  • Emily Watson, Chernobyl

Bale over DeNiro is a choice

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Was The Farewell eligible for best comedy since it was considered a foreign film? It seems odd that it got best actress but couldn't get a top nomination.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterTom G.

I really don't want to see the Ana de Armas movie. Snubbing Constance Wu was ugly.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

The De Niro snub doesn't really surprise me as much. There's been rumors going on for awhile now that HFPA has soured on him, particularly after his Cecil B DeMille award where he basically denigrated them as an organization. They didn't nominate him for Silver Linings Playbook a few years ago, but he got that Oscar nomination.

Absolutely thrilled for the actresses of Unbelievable. That was one of the most powerful pieces of television I saw this year.

Everything else is kinda meh. Little Women underperformed, no?

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Marriage Story is the most nominated film, but Noah Baumbach can’t get a Best Director nod?

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJames

Was “when they see us” eligible? Cuz geez

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMj

MJ - right?

And NO female directors? Wtf, Golden Globes!

Tho SUPER happy for the three female leads of Unbelievable.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPam

I wouldn't say it.... but this nominations are quite good!

The only struggle is the confirmation that for Horror movies the road is still hard towards being considered from major prizes. As last year for Collette I think that is the end of the road to the Oscars for Lupita and Dafoe.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPP

I haven't seen The Morning Show but I can't believe Reese's character is a more perfect or essential Witherspoonian creation than Madeline Martha Mackenzie. If Big Little Lies only got one nomination (and who'd be sad about that?) it should have been Reese.

Thrilled for Annette! The AMPAS hasn't slept on some of her best performances that everyone else slept on.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJF

I LOLed at The Lion King nomination as an animated film when it tried not to be promoted as one. Also, the Gerwing - Baumbach celebrity drama you talked about, that is more of a Critic's Choice thing. Remember when Aniston, Pitt anda Jolie were all nominated together by BFCA in 2015? Golden Globes passed that chance.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJorge

I am stunned and happy about these GG nominations

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

Streep broke her own record and now as 32 Golden Globe Nominations. I also think she may win this one.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Bates and Bening both weren't nominated at the Critics Choice this weekend so perhaps there's some wiggle room for candidates this year and Oscar might surprise?

Perhaps you should prepare yourself for being wrong when you assumed that Bates, Huston, and Gay Harden would never return for further Oscar recognition and I said Bates was fighting for one based on some of the failed prestige projects she had involved herself in. And since Joker and Richard Jewell are the only titles at Warner gaining precursor traction she'll show up on Oscar morning.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

After Uncut Gems has been overperforming with the critics groups, I’m actually kind of surprised that Sandler wasn’t nominated here. I thought if anything he’d be nominated here but not at SAG. I’m tempted to say that if he doesn’t get a SAG nom, he’s probably out of the running, despite the success he’s had with critics groups.

On the other hand, I feel like Eddie Murphy’s probably winning the Globe (unless they go all in for Once Upon a Time... and give it to Leo), and that could help him make the cut at the Oscars. Driver and Phoenix are still the only two sure things in Best Actor, I think. Banderas is starting to look lock-ish, but I’m gonna hold off on saying that until the SAG list is out, because I just have this weird feeling he might be snubbed there.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterEdwin

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Drama Actress lineup is our final Oscar top 5.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Love their loud and clear F.U.'s to Game and Thrones and Veep

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Aaron — I think Cynthia is still vulnerable, with Lupita and possibly Awkwafina looking to take that fifth spot. The other four seem like sure things, though. Best Actress looks MUCH easier to predict than Best Actor this year.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterEdwin

I'm very surprised that the Hollywood Foreign Press would pass over Zhao Shuzhen in THE FAREWELL in Supporting Actress...

but maybe they didn't like the film all the much because it didn't make Best Picture either.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Hurray for!:

- Bale
- Blanchett
- Lopez
- Unbelievable noms
- Netflix getting FOUR best picture noms: Dolemite, Marriage Story, The Irishman and The Pope. Steven Spielberg must be SOOO PIZZZED of right now he he

WTF for:
- no female directors
- Lupita
- Constance Wu
- FvF or Litlle Women
- Most of the guys in supporting are basically lead performances

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterManuel

what's up with no parasite in best picture? is it not eligible as a foreign language film? (roma wasn't nominated for BP either, I just checked)

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRachel Weisz

They always reserve a spot for Helen Mirren. Kidman and Streep received nominations. I had completely forgotten about the second season of Big Little Lies. They must have loved it.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGwen

Yawn. This season is going to be unsatisfying. Also /3rtful nobody would have thought Huston or Bates wouldn’t be back, Gay Harden I could understand.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

We can say Cats is so bad even by the Golden Globe standards. (Wanna see it anyway!)

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterFeline Justice

De Niro is good but nowhere near great and Pesci wipes the floor with him.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Not only did they not nominate one woman director, they didn't nominate one film directed by a woman for their Best Picture prizes. This is inexcusable.

Half of my top 10 this year consists of films directed by women - and I haven't even seen Little Women or Portrait of a Lady on Fire yet.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterjules

but DAVID she's a totally unknown old lady and they're the Globes!

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Dudeville Year continues.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCash

@jules Hear, hear. There's an abundance of great films from female directors this year that are better than half the films nominated. Truly unacceptable and I hope Oscar corrects course.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGF

What is all the fuzz over The Two Popes?
The Morning Show is not that great, but Aniston is the best thing in it.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterFadhil

Netflix dominating in Film and TV. New normal?

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

It would have been nice to see Wang and/or Sciamma get nominated since their films got Best Picture recognition in their assigned category. But if the HFPA didn't love Little Women, Beautiful Day or Hustlers enough to nominate for Best Picture, how do they qualify for Best Director attention?

I don't really see the argument except "You are wrong for not liking ____ more than you did," which is tantamount to assigning "correct" opinions to people.

Unfortunately women aren't directing 20% of all competitive films every year so there are bound to be years where this happens. That's on the industry to fix, and they should.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAnonny

The industry has actually done quite well this year, though. I'm not advocating for one specific film; I just think it's odd to see a group nominate ten films in a year as rich with women-directed films as this one and not find one they like enough to include.

Interestingly, they didn't like When They See Us, by Ava DuVernay, either - and they were very responsive to other Netflix series and films.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterjules

The nominees align with the HFPA's taste. Why is anyone surprised?

I was expecting some more surprising nominations, but if you think about it, they did nominate Blanchett for the poorly reviewed Where'd You Go Bernadette, they did snub De Niro, they gave a lot of praise to the poorly reviewed The Morning Show, Annette Bening got a nomination when everyone thought she was going to be forgotten.

Just because films like Portrait of a Lady on Fire do well with critics does not mean that the Golden Globes would ever respond positively to that sort of thing. They like the mainstream stuff, have for years...The fact that Portrait got in for Foreign Language is good enough.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJoseph

All the people saying Zellweger will win partly because of the role must consider that Erivo can get nominated partly because of the role.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Foreign language films are eligible in all categories except in Best Picture on either Comedy/Musical or Drama. Always been that way.

Most glaring example for me is that Gandhi won Best Actor, Director amd Screenplay but wasn't nominated for Best Picture Drama. It won Foreign Film back when English-speaking overseas films were eligible there.

So two female-directed films in The Farewell and Portrait of a Lady on Fire as Best Picture.

Hanks is a lead...he's more a lead than Dafoe (who needs to be there).

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

Peggy Sue, Ana De Armas was considered a pretty safe bet, if anyone bumped Wu it was Blanchett

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMichael Troutman

Is Bombshell last year's Mary Queen of Scots?

Joker got all the nomination available.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Oh, yes! and I'm glad for her but I rather watch Clue again.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Is Lupita this year's Ethan Hawke?

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge

No one did mention the Julianne Moore snub for Gloria Bell, one of her most surprising and inspired performances of the last 15 years. I knew the movie would have been forgotten at the end of the year, bust at least I was hoping for a nod here.

Very happy for Annette. No Baumbach in Directing is unforgivable.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterFerdi

Surprising that the Emmys were better this year.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJW

@George - No. This year's Toni Collette maybe. ;-)

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

Emma Thompson is clearly best in show in the category. Should be a nominee and I believe the award is hers and that she'll at least be in the running for an Oscar nod.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

Naturally the Globes, which gave a lot of Buzz to Green Book last year, ignored Watchmen and When They See Us, and even Hustlers - all films that confront the ugliness of racial and/or class inequality.

The Globes have nominated The Greatest Showman, Nine, and Burlesque in the past. CATS must be even worse than imaginable.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

My beloved Helena Bonham Carter has the worst luck with the Golden Globes. She finally lands a juicy role in a widely seen prestige project, and she has to be up against the HFPA's all-time favorite actress. This will potentially be HBC's eighth loss, which stinks because she deserves the win (and has in the past, too, especially for Wings of the Dove).

I need to see her win a major televised award at least once in my lifetime.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMike M.

#32 for Streep!

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterbrandz

On second thought. The Kathy Bates nomination makes me sad. It just sticks out. Like my personality disorder.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Mike M.: HBC did win the BAFTA for The King's Speech.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterEdward L.

Let's hope the Oscar nominations will be better than this.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAlex Hartsell

The HFPA is notoriously terrible and populist, but I would like to thank them for the De Niro snub. It's my second-favorite thing about the nominations after nominations for all three Unbelievable ladies
