10th Anniversary: A SERIOUS MAN

"I have never seen a film that mixes laugh-out-loud comedy so intimately with dead serious philosophical questioning. It packs so much into its short runtime. " - Dr strange

"This movie is one of my favorites - Michael Stuhlbarg the biggest reason, he's so heartbreakingly fantastically good in everything." -Rebecca

Lately they've been skimping on anything pre 1980s... but this week we get two Oscar nominated pleasures A Star is Born (1937) and The Bad Seed (1956). Other strong titles this week include the recent documentary Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. (which Glenn also recommends) and Nicole Kidman's international breakthough Dead Calm (1989). If you're a horror fan there are a ton of those this week including South Korean classic The Host (2006), the Goya-winning The Orphanage (2007) and early Stephen King stuff like Cujo (1983) and Cat's Eye and Silver Bullet (both 1985).

Juliet, Naked is a real charmer, particularly for Ethan Hawke fans (in fact, I just watched it for the second time last night).

Dave, me too! It's so hard to believe Julie did only three movies in the 70s. Darling Lili is so gooood. Sigh.

I finally saw Dumbo in the discount theater and I cried for most of it like I knew I would!
