Captain America vs. Captain America

Can Marvel Studio's finally win the Best Visual Effects Oscar at the Oscars via Avengers: Endgame? Or will The Lion King's photo-realism or something as yet unseen take the prize? Here's a video of the making of the Captain America vs Captain America fight.

That fight was definitely the highlight of the movie for us, especially given its perfect punchline...

It seems insane given their nominations in the category and the spectacle nature of their gazillion dollar "universe" that they haven't yet won it. Or even that they've been nominated so infrequently... but both are true. We interviewed them just last Oscar season about Infinity War and were rooting for them to finally take it. They lost again. Their nominations in the category thus far:

  • Iron Man (2008, lost to Benjamin Button)
  • Iron Man 2 (2010, lost to Inception)
  • The Avengers (2012, lost to Life of Pi)
  • Iron Man 3 (2013, lost to Gravity)
  • Captain America: Winter Soldier / Guardians of the Galaxy (2014, both lost to Interstellar)
  • Doctor Strange (2016, lost to Jungle Book)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017, lost to Blade Runner 2049)
  • Avengers Infinity War (2018, lost to First Man)

2019's Biggest Threats to the Visual Effects Oscar?
We suspect the nominations will come from this group...

  • Ad Astra
  • Avengers Endgame
  • Cats
  • Gemini Man
  • The Irishman
  • The Lion King
  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
  • Terminator: Dark Fate

Alita Battle Angel should be a contender but we suspect it won't be in the mix given its early release and low profile since it was neither a critical darling nor a massive hit.

Do you think Marvel Studios ever should have won this prize? Do you think they have a good shot this year?

IT SHOULD WIN BEST VISUAL EFFECTS!!!!!

I love that scene because it shows Cap being more aware of his flaws but also letting go some of his ideals. I love how the scene began with Cap cursing. "You've got to be shitting me"

I also enjoyed the fact that he realizes why so many people hate him as well as outsmart the other Cap and realize... "that is America's ass" and it's the ass we need.

I don't think it's gonna win. Most reviews for The Lion King have named the VE's as a high, so I'm straight up thinking Disney's gonna push that shit hard.

Re: should Marvel have already won this catagory? I'm looking at the years and their nominees, and I'm sorry but I don't think so. To be perfectly honest, I think that 2012's The Avengers was the only other time, other then Black Panther last year (but that was due to other stuff), where Disney/Marvel really had a chance to win ANY Oscars.

9 nominations in 10 years is pretty regular, honestly. It's maybe slightly light, but it's not insanely underrepresented.

The most nominations I could justify for them is 15. Where would I add the nominations?

Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger over Real Steel and Transformers 3 in 2011.
Ant-Man over Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.
Thor: Ragnarok over Kong: Skull Island in 2017.
Black Panther over Ready Player One in 2018.

As for wins? Eh, though I just added 6 nominations that would absolutely improve those ballots? The only win I'd feel justified is probably Doctor Strange. At least, for right now. Maybe the right year/film comes along for them soon, but not sure it's THIS year.

ENDGAME's direct "enemy" is THE LION KING and I believe Disney will push both really hard - THE LION KING might be more impressive visually, but ENDGAME is also a blast of a visual show and it is the highest-grossing movie ever and one of the year's critical darlings, so I think the Mickey Mouse will take this one no matter what.
.
BTW, I have a hunch Disney/Marvel will build a strong campaign in order to promote ENDGAME for Best Picture - it might be a big advantage over THE LION KING
