"Babyteeth" and "Invisible Man" win at the AACTAs

The AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) awards were handed out over two COVID-normal ceremonies in the past week. Kudos to the Film Experience commenter last month who correctly predicted that Babyteeth (streaming on Hulu) would win all the “above the line” awards – it went home with Best Film, Direction, Screenplay and all four acting prizes, as well as Original Score and Casting. The rest of the craft categories were split between The Invisible Man (streaming on HBO Max) and True History Of The Kelly Gang (available to rent online). Best Film: Babyteeth
Best Direction: Shannon Murphy (Babyteeth)
This is the first feature length film from Murphy who has worked extensively in television in the past three years (including a couple of episodes of Killing Eve).
Best Lead Actor: Toby Wallace (Babyteeth)
I first came across this young man last year in a movie called Acute Misfortune, and was immediately impressed (my favourite Australian film of 2019) which is available to rent from various services.
Best Lead Actress: Eliza Scanlen (Babyteeth)
Caps off a great 12 months for the up-and-comer (Little Women, Babyteeth, The Devil All The Time all quickly following her breakout in 2018's miniseries Sharp Objects). She will next be seen next in M Night Shyamalan’s Old which is due in July.
Best Supporting Actor: Ben Mendelsohn (Babyteeth)
Mendelsohn’s third Australian Film award after winning for The Year My Voice Broke (1987) and Animal Kingdom (2010).
Best Supporting Actress: Essie Davis (Babyteeth)
This was Davis’ fourth nomination after Dad and Dave: On Our Selection (1995), Burning Man (2011) and The Babadook (2014) and finally she won!
Best Screenplay: Rita Kalnejais (Babyteeth)
Babyteeth started out its life as a play in the renowned Sydney Belvoir Street Theatre in 2012, and Kalnejais adapted her own script for the screen.
Best Indie Film: Standing Up For Sunny
The only entry in this category with another nomination (Costume Design), this film about comedians and cerebral palsy stars RJ Mitte (Breaking Bad) and Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill, Melinda & Melinda). It is available for streaming on Stan in Australia and on Amazon Prime in the US.
Best Cinematography: The Invisible Man

This feature about Australia’s iconic indigenous performing arts company is getting a cinema release in Australia in February.

Best Original Score In A Documentary: Brazen Hussies
Documentary about the start of the Women’s Liberation Movement in Australia (recommended!).

The Byron Kennedy Award: Jennifer Kent

The Byron Kennedy Award was also presented, recognising the impact of Australian low-budget genre filmmaking and celebrating the outstanding creative enterprise within the screen industry. Jennifer Kent was announced as the recipient for her international success on the AACTA Award-winning film, The Babadook.”

Very happy for BABYTEETH! It's definitely in my top 10 of the year and while I knew and expected great performances from the top cast, I didn't know anything about Toby Wallace. He was a revelation! Thanks for the rec on his other film.
Yay Babyteeth! So glad for its cast, for Murphy, and for Kalnejais. Hell, I'd've been happy if it scooped editing too. Even if I'd seen more films from this year like I normally have by now this would be up and down my ballot. Such a superb film. Also, A+ picture usage for George McKay. Forgot how fun he was to look at in that.
I'm on the record as finding the AACTAs all a bit embarrassing and not a particularly good representation of Australian film. I don't think Babyteeth quite earned that sweep, but what can you do? The Invisible Man and Kelly Gang wins are all quite spot on, though.
FWIW, Stateless swept the TV awards and while I don't agree with that (Cate Blanchett wasn't even the best supporting actress on the series), I am very happy Yvonne Strahovski won in Best Actress. Hers is my favourite performance across TV *and* film all year. Truly embarrassing that American tastemakers haven't clocked on yet. Too many middle-of-the-road American shows to bother with the likes of Stateless and Mystery Road, I assume.
Really adored Babyteeth; Wallace, Mendelsohn, and Davis in particular would easily be among the top performances I've seen in any category all year.
Babyteeth is still one of my favourite films of the year. :)

I feel ashamed that i still haven't seen BABYTEETH. so many people love it. I *will* make time this coming week.
I haven’t seen Babyteeth yet but looking forward to it. The Aactas/AFIs really go all in sometimes.. In past it’s felt a bit like they’ll go apeshit for anything with some elevated production values and a sniff of a profile in the US?
However I did love Somersault and Lantana which swept like Babyteeth so what do I know? Can’t be mad when national treasures like the lovely Kerry Armstrong & Vince Colosimo walking away with trophies right?
@Glenn I have the same opinion as you about Yvonne Strahovski in Stateless: best performance of the year, overall.
Chong, the entire organisation has changed since the days of Somersault and Lantana, though. They’re more brazen in their craving of international attention as evidenced by their embarrassing international AACTA ceremony.
