Dino's Might

by Jason Adams

If I've said it once I've said it a million times (I've definitely said it a million times) -- Jurassic Park is my Star Wars. Lil' Jason saw the original film in the theater thirteen times when it hit in 1993, a record that stood tall until Call Me By Your Name struck fancy twenty-five years later. I was obsessed, and locked myself in for life on seeing all of the sequels no matter what.

Which has become a lot of "no matter what" since every single sequel's been more of a disappointment than the one before. Well, I maybe liked Fallen Kingdom a smidge more than the first Jurassic World, but we're splitting dino-hairs here...

The beautiful simplicity of Spielberg's first film keeps getting bogged down in great big heaps of steaming Triceratops dung. There's a bigger meaner genetically-enhanced Rapture-o-Rex every time out, and not a one's left as big a footprint as our dear old friend Tyrannosaur yet.

And yet today director Colin Trevorrow tweeted out the clapboard from the new film (see below) revealing its subtitle -- Jurassic World: Dominion -- and I can't help it, the boy can't help it, I'm excited despite myself. It sure doesn't hurt that our beloved original trio, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum AND MOST IMPORTANTLY LAURA DERN AS THE SCIENTIST AND LEGEND ELLIE SATTLER are all back... although given how they played us with Goldblum's appearance in the last film -- a minute of screentime in a courtroom??? -- we're allowed to be suspicious. Still. I can't help it. I'm gonna go put on my cargo shorts and run around the yard making roar sounds, I just know it. Anybody with me?

THe original is still one of the best summer films of all time, and has Spielberg firing on all cylinders.

That said, even I've given up with the newest batch of films. I found the Jurassic World character to be grating and the moments of nostalgia in the plot beats did nothing for me. Knowing the original cast is back is a bit tempting.

The first new film was fun enough. The second was... not. But bringing EVERYONE back for the third film means I will see it.

Oh and Joseph Mazzello, who played the little guy Tim in the original film, just hinted on Twitter he might be returning too!

I'm with you, Jason. My first viewing of Jurassic Park was magic and the magic holds on reruns. The sequels lack the magic but I will still watch them. Hopefully Laura Dern gets to do more than answer the phone this time.

While appropriate, I guess Jurassic World: The Kitchen Sink was a bit too on the nose.

I'm a sucker for any dinosaur movie, so I am in.

By the by - did you see Battle of Big Rock - the short film set after Fallen Kingdom? It's on YouTube and is pretty awesome.

I saw JP 13 times in the theatre, too. Hilarious.
