The Emperor's New Link(s)
Heads up! At Movie City News the first "Gurus of Gold" charts are up with yours truly along with several other pundits - apparently I'm the only one nervous about Riz Ahmed's Oscar prospects and the one who is most certain about One Night in Miami's prospects. Extremely grossed out that Aaron Sorkin makes the top five in Best Director. Yes, he's a talented writer but come on now... that's a different skill set.
• Vulture an oral history of the making of The Emperor's New Groove
• Variety 'Actors on Actors' gets Steven Yeun and Riz Ahmed talking
• Digital Spy on WandaVision's use of tv tropes to give away its secrets
Amazing cast for HBO miniseries, new Kelly Reichardt, and terrifying Pee Wee after the jump...
• Deadline Scenes from a Marriage, a limited series adaptation of the classic Ingmar Bergman that will star Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac (A Most Violent Year reunion!) now has a truly stellar supporting cast: Nicole Beharie, Corey Stoll, and Tovah Feldshuh
• MNPP Michelle Williams and Kelly Reichardt are reteaming for a fourth time! It's called Showing Up and it's billing itself as "sharply funny" which is not something we normally think of with Kelly Reichardt movies!
• Variety Netflix has 8 songs in contention so they could well land the Original Song Oscar this year
• Deadline Shrill, Aidy Bryant's very good comedy series, will be ending with its next season
• Cartoon Brew looks at the only Brazilian animated short in the running for Oscar this year
• IndieWire CBS got their new series Clarice (yes, that Clarice of Silence of the Lambs fame) by promising carte blanche to the creative team (maybe network TV will improve with fewer notes to combat ttheir many losses to streaming?)
• Vanity Fair Elliot Page is getting a divorce after three years with their wife
• Deadline has a fun photogallery of Cloris Leachman's career
"Pee-Wee Park"
Finally, I can't believe this escaped our notice until now as it was posted in August but if it's new to you too, you MUST watch this 'trailer' from the evil masterminds at Pixel Riot.
It's so beautiful. My only complaint is that the "clever girl" bit didn't use Pee Wee in drag from that hilarious scene in Big Adventure (1985)

It's killing me that Netflix are pushing Rocket To The Moon over Ultraluminary, which is far and away the better (and more fun!) song from that movie. Odd that they don't mention the many excellent songs from the otherwise pretty dreadful Eurovision film...
Some of those Gurus O' Gold predictions are downright bizarre - like The Outpost (I don't know her) nominated for Best Picture or Feels Good Man nominated for Best Animated Feature.
Steven Yeun & Riz Ahmed took my mind to inappropriate places and Iām not mad about it š
@Nat Do you like Riz so much that doubting eases the upset if he misses,i'm assuming you do like him.
Perhaps you already mentioned it and I somehow missed it, but Jane Fonda has been selected as this year's recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award (it's old news, I know).
Paul -- i think i forgot to mention it. oops
Steven Yeun is so great. I hope he makes an Oscar breakthrough this season.
Wait, is that Netflix/Best Song article accurate/complete i.e. that's ALL the songs they're putting forth? So no original song contender from The 40 Year Old Version? Also if true then I agree with Ben that it's RIDICULOUS "Ultraluminary" from Over the Moon wasn't picked. It's video on YT is 10x more popular than "Rocket to the Moon."
I honestly can't believe that I'd ever get excited about a new Kelly Reichardt project, but First Cow did it for me. "Sharply funny" can mean many things but I'm looking forward to seeing it!
Nathaniel, I know you are scared of the record of the Asian actors to the Oscars, but let's think about this... If the pundits and press continue to moan and still not predicting the Asian actors then AMPAS won't hear. After Parasite, this opens a good opportunity, why not taking a gamble and push harder the Asian actors to happen? Without promotion and buzz, they won't happen at the end.
Count me as a fan of "Rocket to the Moon" - it's the song I play the most, besides "Love Someone New," but while the latter is about acceptance and moving on, I dig the former for its portrayal of activity in the face of grief - if I focus on THIS, it will fix THAT. As for "The Forty-Year-Old Version" a lot of the songs featured on the soundtrack were first performed by Radha Blank under the RADHAMUSprime stage name years ago and were published on her YouTube page.
I think Yeun takes the fifth spot in Best Actor. I think Ahmed is a lock.
That Variety song article is... strange. Surely they just left off the Eurovision songs as well as The 40-Year-Old Version. Surely. That being said, the Taylor Swift song is the only one of those songs the article highlights that I'd even consider nominating. That Diane Lane song is "as deserving as they come"? I mean YIKES.
