Box Office: "Eternals" opens big, "Spencer" doesn't pack them in.
What did you see this past week/weekend? The public came out in droves for Marvel's disappointing Eternals because the public always comes out for Marvel's Anything. In more surprising news Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch held strong as it added theaters and continues to overperform while Spencer, despite a lot of Oscar buzz for Kristen Stewart, slightly underperformed. Of course you could also argue that it overperformed given the dire market these days for non-franchise* adult-oriented pictures.

The Harder They Fall and Lamb. Enjoyed both very much, even though they're not my usual fare. I'm really pissed that HBO Max cancelled Lovecraft Country because I want more of Jonathan Majors.
IMO, The Harder They Fall was a million times better than Tarantino's Hateful Eight; I detested that movie with a passion. The cast and soundtrack for THTF was outstanding too.
Passing, The French Dispatch.
Both were worthwhile.
Saw two "remakes": Dune on the big screen and Scenes from a Marriage on the small screen. A little Oscar Isaac Fest. And why not?
I've seen The French Dispatch twice now and I do not understand the critiques calling it empty and emotionally uninvolving. It's certainly dense and hard to get on its wavelength, but I find it extremely moving. There are so many themes and ideas repeated through the 3 stories - they're really connected and I feel subsequent viewings will be rewarding.
I had a blast at Last Night in Soho though I would agree that the screenplay is very flawed. I saw it in an odd double feature with The Humans - great performances and it had more jump scares than Soho.
Saw Spencer. Solid if unspectacular. Stewart was good but I do not think she's winning Best Actress for it.
