Makeup and Hairstylists nominations - Quite different than Oscar finalists!
by Nathaniel R
Apologies that we missed this announcement but the Makeup and Hairstylist Guild announced their nominees this past week. It's an interesting peek at what the makeup professionals in the industry think since it's not super reflective of what the Academy's smaller makeup branch thinks given that FOUR of Oscar's ten finalists (The Glorias, One Night in Miami, Emma, and The Little Things) are nowhere to be found. Other films that makeup and hair artists clearly did like such as Mulan, Bill & Ted Face the Music, The Prom, Promising Young Woman, and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm somehow all missed Oscar's finals.
The categories with six nominees in the list after the jump are due to ties in voting...
MOTION PICTURE – Best Contemporary Make-Up
- Bill & Ted Face the Music Bill Corso, Dennis Liddiard, Stephen Kelley
- Birds of Prey Deborah Lamia Denaver, Sabrina Wilson, Miho Suzuki, Cale Thomas
- Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Katy Fray, Lisa Layman, Thomas Kolarek
- The Prom Eryn Krueger Mekash, J. Roy Helland, Kyra Panchenko, Donald McInnes
- Promising Young Woman Angela Wells, Brigitte Hennech, Adam Christopher
Only one of these films, Birds of Prey, made the Oscar finals... reminding us yet again that Oscar really does have a problem with comtemporary films in their craft categories (it's not just costume design)
MOTION PICTURE – Best Period and/or Character Make-Up
- Bill & Ted Face the Music Bill Corso, Dennis Liddiard, Stephen Kelley, Bianca Appice
- Hillbilly Elegy Eryn Krueger Mekash, Jamie Hess, Devin Morales, Jessica Gambardella
- Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Matiki Anoff, Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Carl Fullerton, Debi Young
- Mank Gigi Williams, Michelle Audrina Kim
- Mulan Denise Kum, Rick Findlater, Georgia Lockhart-Adams, James Mackinnon
Still shocked that Mulan -- which had amazing makeup work which we loved talking about with Denise Kum -- didn't make Oscar's finals.
MOTION PICTURE – Best Special Make-Up Effects
- Bill & Ted Face the Music Bill Corso, Kevin Yagher, Steve Wang, Stephen Kelley
- Hillbilly Elegy Eryn Krueger Mekash, Matthew Mungle, Jamie Hess
- Mulan Denise Kum, Chris Fitzpatrick
- Pinocchio Mark Coulier
- The United States vs. Billie Holiday Adrian Morot
- Wonder Woman 1984 Jan Sewell, Mark Coulier
Another category wherein most of the nominees didn't make Oscar's finals (only Hilbilly Elegy and Pinnochio did)
MOTION PICTURE – Best Contemporary Hair Styling
- Bill & Ted Face the Music Donna Spahn-Jones, Budd Bird, Jeri Baker, Ulla Gaudin
- Birds of Prey Adruitha Lee, Cassie Russek, Margarita Pidgeon, Nikki Nelms
- Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Kimberly Boyenger, Tyler Ely
- The Prom Chris Clark, Natalie Driscoll, Ka’Maura Eley, J. Roy Helland
- Promising Young Woman Daniel Curet, Bryson Conley, Lee Ann Brittenham
MOTION PICTURE – Best Period Hair Styling and/or Character Hair Styling
- Hillbilly Elegy Patricia Dehaney, Tony Ward, Martial Corneville, Stacey Butterworth
- Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Mia Neal, Larry Cherry, Leah Loukas, Tywan Williams
- Mank Kimberley Spiteri, Colleen LaBaff
- Mulan Denise Kum, Rick Findlater, Georgia Lockhart-Adams, Terry Baliel
- Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey Sharon Martin, Kat Fa
Here we finally have a category that aligns with Oscar tastes. All of these made the finals except Mulan.

I think that the challenge to do the Donald Trump make up in secret, with later Baron Cohen waiting FIVE hours in a toilet to shoot his scene... it's the make up challenge of the year?
I still don't get how Borat 2 missed the shortlist. Especially considering that awful song getting. But I'm happy for the Birds of Prey, Ma Rainey, and Mank camps, and it's nice to see Promising Young Woman show up.
Well, regarding the Mulan makeup, though I think it's beautiful, it don't think it works for the film. Yifei Liu NEVER looks like man for a second and it makes other characters responding to her as a male look extremely dumb. It's even laughable at times...
Completely agree with the bafflement over the Borat Subsequent Moviefilm snub.
Not only was the makeup front-and-center, not only were the multiple intricate disguises key to several of their comedy scenes even being pulled off successfully in the first place, but also was a huge part of the "transformation" of the one part of the movie that is getting a lot of awards attention -- Maria Bakalova as Tutar!
