Last few days to stream these titles!
by Nathaniel R
We've decided to do our streaming roulette feature a bit differently (and weekly) since streaming movies come and go so quickly. It's too overwelming to list everything and who's checking three weeks later anyway? We'll start on March 1st but since there's only four days left in February, here are some titles that you might want to watch now because they're leaving the services this weekend! As we do we've blind-frozen them at totally random places (no cheating) just to see what image/line comes up and sharing it with you...
-When we get home I'm going to fix you some Sal Hepatica.
-yeah, that'll settle me right down.
HUD (1963) - leaving Hulu
I had to look up 'Sal Hepatica'. Turns out it's a mineral laxative. Eww. Anyway, that's not the point. The point is if you still haven't watched this Paul Newman classic, what is the hold up? You will not regret it. Nominated for 7 Oscars but not Best Picture (one of Oscar's greatest fuck-ups... but also statistically of note) even though it's one of the very best movies of its whole decade, let alone 1963. It won three Oscars: Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Cinematography.
[painful breathing]
WITNESS (1985) leaving Hulu
I think I've mentioned that this is my mom's favourite movie. I love it, too. All anybody seems to remember about 1985 was the Out of Africa vs Color Purple sweepstakes for Best Picture but Witness is sublime and I'd argue the best (of the nominees at least). The other two Best Pic contenders were Prizzi's Honor and Kiss of the Spider Woman. And excuse me but where is Peter Weir's honorary Oscar? So many classics, six nominations, no wins. Witness was nominated for 8 Oscars, winning 2: Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
-I really don't need those.
-Oh, you REALLY do. Here you go. HERE YOU GO.
EASY A (2010) leaving Netflix
Lisa Kudrow can always bring the giggles. This movie is so strange in that the performances are top-notch but it's not that great of a movie despite all the star-making heat coming off of Emma Stone. Or perhaps you feel differently?
You had that one little feeling. You though, 'What if?' But you waved it away, though 'Ah, what the hell? Life's too short'. And you were right. Life is too short, Julie. And you should've listened.
THE LITTLE THINGS (2021) leaving HBOMax
Listen, I'm not saying you should watch The Little Things. It's terrible. But it MIGHT end up with an Oscar nomination or two (sigh) so if you're a completist, it's the last weekend to cach it outside of movie theaters with HBOMax's new arrangement for Warner Bros theatrical releases.
-Is Mr Henderson busy?
-Yes but there's a Mr Holroyd with him.
BELL BOOK & CANDLE (1958) - leaving Criterion Channel
The men being discussed are Jimmy Stewart and Jack Lemmon so it's quite a starry film but what's important here is this: Doesn't Kim Novak, playing a witch, look fabulous in her Jean-Louis costumes? Nominated for 2 Oscars: Art Direction & Costume Design (aka the 'eye candy Oscars' and/or 'Moulin Rouge! double')
But why?!?
NOW, VOYAGER (1942) leaving Criterion Channel
That's the eternal question, isn't it Bette? Now, Voyager was nominated for three Oscars in its year winning for its Max Steiner score.

Now, Voyager shouldn't work, but it does. It's my favorite Bette Davis movie.
Witness still clicks decades later.
Bell, Book, and Candle should have been a home run, but it's just boring.
Someone needs to write the cast of Easy A a better movie.
I can never decide who gives the best performance in Hud. That's how good it is.
Kyle MacLachlan joined Tik Tok!
re: Witness
Whoah. I know it's on your alphabetical top ten for 1985, but that didn't give me the impression you felt that strongly towards it. I know 1985 is thought of as the nadir of the 1980s (especially for English language film), so that's really interesting
I really hope Jared Leto wins a Razzie.
Hud is one of the best movies I've watched for the first time during the Pandemic Year. 5/5 stars. And 69/69 stars for Paul Newman in all of his tanktops in this film.
Now Voyager and Hud are so great and BOTH didn't get best picture nominations! For shame Academy.
THE LITTLE THINGS is very bad, but Jared Leto is definitely not the worst thing about it (that'd be Rami Malek, easily).
I think people should be getting ready for Hillbilly Elegy scoring Picture, Actress, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Make Up nominations and maybe even Score. And being a dark horse for the win, given how insanely overdue Adams and Close are...
... the key point? Oh well. The conservative wing of the AMPAS will cream their pants with that film. Think of Green Book, just worse (Green Book is actually a good film and with a positive message, if puerile and distorting the truth... HE is really sick).
Now, Voyager = M A S T E R P I E C E
I have never streamed a film and am unsure what happens.
"And excuse me but where is Peter Weir's honorary Oscar?" THANK YOU, NATHANIEL. Weir is a genius and he and Mike Leigh are at the top of my personal list insofar as honorary Oscars are concerned.
I just bought Criterion's edition of Now, Voyager at the 50% off sale and I can't wait to dig into the special features. The Criterion edition of All About Eve is fantastic. There is an old Bette Davis interview on the Dick Cavett show that is a hoot. I think I need to read her memoirs.
I'd love Claudio do to an Almost There on Leto if he fails to be nominated.I have yet to see the film so can't comment on him is he too hammy, too broad, acting in another universe, lethargic, what is it about him and his performance that has rankled so many
Looks like i'll have a busy movie weekend watching or rewatching Hud, Witness, and Dick Tracy
I loved Easy A ,. going so far as placing it in my top five of the year. But I haven't seen it since. I should revisit to see if it holds up for me, or if I was just jacked up on star-is-born breathless excitement for Emma Stone's A+ performance.
@Nicolas. You are not wrong. Easy A is a fun film. And I still love Emma Stone in everything, even in some of her less-than-stellar choices (cough--Magic in the Moonlight, Aloha--cough) The pairing of Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as her parents is genius; I would love to see the three of them in another film together.
Recently listened to a couple radio adaptations of Now, Voyager, one with Ida Lupino and Paul Heinreid, another with Sarah Lancashire and Anthony Stewart Head, but Bette's film version is the BOMB.
WITNESS was in my Top Ten of the 80s at the time. Well actually, I think I only had eight films I considered The Best for that decade. I'm sure I could come up with more now. I haven't seen it in 30 years though I'm sure.
HUD is brilliant of course, and I always pair it in my mind with THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. TLPS came out only eight years after HUD, but by that time it was considered a nostalgia piece. Funny how quickly life and times were changing at the time.
mark -- this is actually a good idea. i'll pitch it too Claudio ;)
Kim Novak is always a vision, like Hitchcockian goddess (Vertigo), little town girl (Picnic), black-and-white(Jeanne Eagels), full color (Strangers When We Meet), good girl(The Man With The Golden Arm), bad girl (Of Human Bondage), dramatic (Middle of the Night), comedy (Kiss me Stupid), musical(Pal Joey), supporting (Phffft) and leading(The Notorious Landlady). Have I ever said I'm a fan?
Now, one of the movies in which she is most beautiful and convincing as an actress and one of her best - and one of my favorites - is with no doubt, The Eddy Duchin Story. With the wonderful Tyrone Power. Watch, who has never seen It, without reading much about it because that's a beautiful story based on the life of the character who gives the film its title. And Bell Book and Candle is really fun but to my surprise it is little known.
