Movie City New Gurus of Gold latest predictions - i find it interesting that the ranking is all over the place with Promising Young Woman all the way from #1 to #10 (though it's on all the lists)
IndieWire There was so much awards stuff happening this week that we never discusseed Todd Haynes planning a Peggy Lee biopic with Michelle Williams. Obviously I feel bad about this because we love all three people and that sounds amazing!
Empire Got a spare 182 minutes? Directors Edgar Wright and Quentin Tarantino did a podcast together.

Steven Yeun, WandaVision, a messy Color Purple legal battle, a strange Nicole Kidman story, Edward Scissorhands at the Superbowl, and more after the jump...

Deadline Göteborg Film Festival just ended and gave awards to films that were also popular at Sundance like the animated Flee and the porn drama Pleasure but the top winner was an international sports biopic called Tigers which won the fest + Best Actor. The film is in Swedish, Italian, and English.
MUBI Rotterdam film festival also recently ended with a domestic abuse drama Pebbles from India taking the top prize
NYT Magazine long form profile of Steven Yeun. I want to believe he's going to get that Oscar nom but still not quite believing it.
Vanity Fair on that recent mind-blowing cameo in WandaVision. I was mortified (because I dont care for the actor) but most people loved it.
Daily Beast here's an odd story - police were called when a theater patron swatted Nicole Kidman with a program for giving the cast a standing ovation. WTF?
Advocate here's a messy story - an actress fired from The Color Purple in London because of her homophobia is suing her agent and theater, and claims not to have known that the main character Celie was a lesbian.
The Oatmeal a comic about video calls
IndieWire Chloe Zhao's next two pictures after Nomadland are aiming for the mainstream. First is obviously Marvel's Eternals and afterwards she's doing a new spin on Dracula.  We wish her the best but hope she doesn't lose what makes her special as she spends the next few years in franchiseland.
Variety Oscar winning screenwriter Robert C Jones (Coming Home) has died
Go Fug Yourself thinks Cicely Tyson was chic as hell and has the photogallery to prove it.

Today's Video
It's Superbowl Sunday (no joke. I never realize that until the actual day of it) which means pricey commercials and trailers. Here's one riffing on Edward Scissorhands with a hopefully very well-paid Winona Ryder and Timothée Chalamet.

There's also four ads featuring LGBTQ+ stars.

I'd rather eat glass tbh.

More Winona!

Nat: I mean, though I'd basically agree that, if you were going to recast anyway, "neither of them" would be the best option, but if it's a toss-up between him and their original choice? I can't disagree with their call, exactly.

Volvagia -- gross. But i understand I'm in the distinct minority of not finding Evan Peters charming or all that watchable in anything.

Nicole Kidman - notorious quarantine dodger. Lol. Seriously though, she should set a good example. She is a celebrity!

The NYT piece on Steven Yeun is worth reading IF you skip past the first eight paragraphs. Dude, this article is not about you. You can make the point you're trying to make about Asian/Korean American identity just as well without the extended navel-gazing intro. (And give it a rest on Amy Tan and the angst of being an MFA who wants to write "serious" literary fiction.)

Nat: I don't know if I really LIKE either of them (and, as I said, I would have pushed Feige toward someone else, if I had his ear), it's just "who do I dislike LESS" and...after I saw original Quicksilver in Nocturnal Animals...? I didn't want to see that guy EVER AGAIN afterward.

so it appears edward could hold kim...

Wait. People like the reveal on WandaVision? I *hated* it, and using Evan Peters robs that scene of any emotion it might have had otherwise.

goodbar -- i dunno if you had a palatial estate where you could hole up privately, would you really turn that down to stay in a hotel for 2 weeks? as much as i agree that celebrities should set a good example, never leaving your home for two weeks is not exactly dodging quarantine (that's what all of us did eessentially is hole up at home.)

ben1283 -- agreed.

I will say I am loving WandaVision much, much more than I anticipated. Great story telling! Looking forward to see what will happen with that special appearance!!!!!!

Sorry, I'm grumpy because I saw very bad movies this weekend.

Sorry Peggy

I cannot believe I am writing this but looking forward to the Critics Choice nominations tomorrow to get this train back on track. Raci, Lindo, Zendaya, and Burstyn all need this. My no guts, no glory prediction is Bo Burnham for BSA in Promising Young Woman.

So sorry Peggy Sue

I admit that Evan Peters is an acquired taste (I almost never enjoy his work), but...

“I was mortififed”

lol that’s such an overreaction.

Peggy with better taste you always have a decent movie in the mix to have something to appreciate.

OK possible SPOILERS for the rest of WandaVision

SPOILERS - the cameo not only opens the Pandora's Box, but also distracts the audience from the really important cue on the episode that was shown in one of the first trailers. Darcy discusses with Woo, the chance of contacting an aerospace engineer (in latin countries is defined as a "she") that kind of indicates is Susan Storm... we saw that someone makes a vehicle to enter the dome, and they have already stablished that the dome is made of cosmic radiation and hinted that Monica has earned powers by crossing it violently... I can bet that the team that will be crossing the dome would be Storm's scientific team (Reed Richards, Susan Storm, John Storm and Ben Grimm) and we may be watching the origin of the Fantastic Four during WandaVision, which makes a lot of sense for several reasons... 1) Marvel gets rid of the origin story, so they can jump into their film, without that weight 2) Agnes is supposed to be Agatha Harkness, who not only babysitted Billy and Tommy in the series but also did so with Franklin Richards, the first son of the FF 3) She also works for Mefisto in the comics, and Mefisto is heavily linked to Dr. Doom because he has his mother as hostage. 4) That doesn't mean that we'll see the FF battling Wanda, they may just be taken away for recovery after the accident. 5) They also have stablished that Wanda is somewhat telepath and brought X-Men Pietro's, so Wanda knows now that she was adopted in the MCU and her father is Magneto... 6) that is why it is quite possible that she opens even further the multiverse and brings the characters/performers that Feige is interested in keeping from both Sony and Fox's runs, prominently, Fassbender's Magneto and Reynolds' Deadpool (as he is confirmed already)

END SPOILERS.

Exciting to see if I am right on these suspictions... because everything is heavily hinted already, both within the series and also from leaks and announcements from Marvel and some actors themselves...

Jesus: Also Molina's Doc Ock. And I'm going to say something weird: I'm not certain MCU Fantastic Four is going to have Reed, Sue and Johnny. Oh, there'll BE an MCU Fantastic Four, but I'm thinking it MIGHT be Dipper (Mr. Fantastic), Mabel (Human Torch) and Wendy (Invisible Woman), from Gravity Falls + Ben Grimm, because Disney can do that and side stepping all of Reed Richards' "baggage" might be their play. Not a bad one, honestly, if that's where they're going. But, you may be asking, who is Doom if most of the Fantastic Four is from the Mystery Shack? That's where something's kind of nagging at me. Looking on IMDB, Grey Griffin is the odd person out of that cast. Why would they need a voice actress? But Grey Griffin as Victoria Von Doom (a whip smart, dictatorial scientist-sorcerer with crazy will power) would maybe make a kind of WEIRD directorial choice make more sense. I'm specifically talking about Jon Watts on Fantastic Four. He's not bad, but there's nothing about what he did with Spider-Man as a film that screams "Give Him Fantastic Four!" But if Grey Griffin is Doom, then Fantastic Four might wind up being a co-production with Warner Bros. Because Grey Griffin HAS played a whip smart dictatorial scientist-sorcerer with crazy will power before: MANDY, from Billy and Mandy, a Cartoon Network show. And if Jon Watts' job is mostly being their "co-production guy"...? It kind of clicks.
