Streaming Roulette, January: Being the Lost Daughter of the Manor
What's streaming in January? You know the drill by now. We pick a handful of titles and freeze them on the scroll bar at a random place (no cheating) and share what came up. Let's go.
[Crying in distance]
The Lost Daughter (2021) on Netflix
It's apt that our streaming roulette landed on this image of Leda (Jessie Buckley) ignoring her children. The discourse about this movie has been weirdly reductive and centered on freaking out that she's a "bad mother". I have no idea what ot make of this film's Oscar chances. Critics have been kind but it's an irritable confrontational movie i.e. not what Oscar usually goes for. And Netflix has soooo much on their plate in terms of Best Picture.
Contrary to popular belief, women of the time had the tongues of filthy sailors.
The Lady of the Manor (2021) on Amazon Prime
If Yellowjackets has reminded you what a perpetual delight Melanie Lynskey is (omg Yellowjackets is good - are you watching?) she has a new comedy in which she's paired with Judy Greer.
Desire and fear baby. Just give the people what they want.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021) on HBOMax
We've already shared brief thoughts on this movie here but did you enjoy its ultra-meta quality? As if Lana Wachowski is commenting on the making of the movie even more than actually making it? Cheers to her for pitching both Jonathan Groff and Neil Patrick Harris as evil gays, though. LOL
Olé´Olé Olé ♫
Being the Ricardos (2021) on Amazon Prime
Javier Bardem hasn't been getting much attention other than arguments about casting a Spaniard as a Cuban but one thing he did remind us of in this picture is how insanely charismatic he is. People are really mad at this movie for myriad reasons (a couple of which it deserves but mostly just because it's an easy target and people like to be mad) and it makes you wonder if the problem is Aaron Sorkin Overdosing. A little of him goes a long way and it's been less than a year since Trial of the Chicago 7's Oscar run.
THAT'S MUCH LESS OF A SELECTION THAN WE USUALLY DO BUT MORE STREAMING TITLES FOLLOW... ANY REQUESTS FOR COVERAGE?

I did not enjoy The Lost Daughter. At all. OK the performances were good across the board. Coleman was solid. But the story is dull, there's no payoff, the psychological dilemma is weak, i was bored.
Yesterday on MUBI, I watched the 45-minute IMAX version of Terrence Malick's 2016 documentary Voyage of Time which is a must for anyone that loves Malick.
I do LOVE Melanie Lynskey so I’ll put that one on my list.
Someone on Twitter asked for recommendations for streaming musicals the other day and I just happened across a crazy one to add to the list. THAT DAY WE SANG (Amazon Prime) written by UK national treasure Victoria Wood, starring Imelda “freakin” Staunton and Michael Ball. Plus Sophie Thompson, Vincent Franklin, and Conleth Hill (one of the best George’s in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf I’ve ever seen). So weird, wacky, and wonderful, and I couldn’t stop watching.
I admit that I have been surprised by the reaction to THE LOST DAUGHTER. Not necessarily the film itself and especially not Olivia Colman, but people are genuinely thinking Jessie Buckley is great and they... love her scenes? Whereas it reminds me of THE WIFE in that I found its flashbacks to academia perplexing and unnecessarily fore-fronted. Gyllenhaal needn't have been so literal with its themes and I would have much preferred to parse out this part of the characters life through Colman herself. Maybe I just have so little interest in tired academic settings of lothario professors that women just fall into bed easily with (see also that Elisabeth Moss movie).
Didn't always jive with what Lana Wachowski was doing in THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS, but loves its audacity and it's one I find myself thinking about much more than most blockbusters these days. I don't think it is at all far fetched to see the similarities with Lynch's season three of Twin Peaks in terms of thematic ambition within a beloved property known for being one thing to the masses but something else to its makers.

Yellowjackets is great. I was worried it would be too gory for me, but it's worth the occasional gore. Juliette Lewis should get more opportunities!
Nicole Kidman worked really well as Lucy for me, but I could not buy Bardem as Desi. I hate to rely on physical resemblance too much, because I know intellectually it really shouldn't matter in a biopic, but emotionally it was hard for me to see him as Desi they just look nothing alike. (I wish John Leguizamo had been given that role.)
I am on episode 5 of Yellowjackets and it is terrific far!
I don't understand why Maggie Gyllenhaal gave Dakota Johnson so little to do in The Lost Daughter.
You get the sense that she's one scene (or one generous directorial choice) away from a sensational, Oscar-worthy performance. I don't know why you wouldn't give her that scene, or make that directorial choice.
DK : agreed. Though had she not rushed her last scene that would have sufficed. Nina went from thanking Leda for finding the doll to stabbing her in the space of 45 seconds or so. It felt oddly paced.
