Lots of winners at a 'spread the wealth' kind of Gotham Awards
by Nathaniel R
A24's Everything Everywhere All At Once triumphed at the Gotham Awards last night in NYC winning two prizes: Best Feature and Best Supporting Performance (Ke Huy Quan). Since the Gothams have very few categories, the nomination leaders Tár and Aftersun had to settle for one prize each. The big awards story of the night, punditry-wise if not at the actual event since she wasn't there, was Danielle Deadwyler taking Best Lead Performance for Till. That's a nice feather in her cap and when you're less famous than your competition, every bit of media attention helps. It's always been hard to win third Oscars so perhaps Best Actress will end up very competitive and not just a cakewalk for Blanchett? Full list of winners plus a few quotes and notes after the jump...
FILM AWARDS
BEST FEATURE
- Aftersun (A24)
- Cathedral (MUBI)
- Dos Estaciones (Cinema Guild)

EEAAO is looking well positioned to score major Oscar nominations. But that was true before this win, too.
BEST DOCUMENTARY
- ★ All That Breathes (Sideshow/HBO)
- All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (NEON)
- I Didn't See You There (RePort Media)
- The Territory (National Geographic)

All That Breathes seems likely to land in the Oscar finals, but can it make the nominee list?

- The Banshees of Inisherin -Ireland (Searchlight)
- Corsage - Austria (IFC Films)
- Decision to Leave - South Korea (MUBI)
- ★ Happening - France (IFC Films)
- Saint Omer - France (Super LTD)
'How about that?' Baz Lurhmann says to writer/director Audrey Diwan as he hands her the prize. We loved Happening so much last year at Venice that it's sweet to see it being honored again after a long drought and crawl into various cinemas around the world after that first big win. If you haven't yet check out our interview with the director and star!
BREAKTHROUGH DIRECTOR
- ★ Charlotte Wells, Aftersun
- Owen Kline, Funny Pages
- Elegance Bratton, The Inspection
- Antonetta Alamat Kusijanovic, Murina
- Beth de Araujo, Soft & Quiet
- Jane Schoenbrun, We're All Going to the World's Fair
As suspected Wells won. She gave a cute humble acceptance speech and even quoted a fortune she received from "Zaltar" at Coney Island. This is the (first) official awards show that she's attended but it won't be her last. She'll likely take many "first film" or "breakthrough" prizes for this evocative artful memory piece about her father.
SCREENPLAY
- After Yang, Kogonada
- Armageddon Time, James Gray
- Catherine Called Birdy, Lena Dunham
- ★ TÁR, Todd Field
- Women Talking, Sarah Polley
'Best'. We all know that word is a cartoonish absolute with no place in any conversation about the creative endeavors. But we campaign for it. We show up for it. We pray for it. If only so the thing we made will be seen and heard and not forgotten in this noisy world.
Great choice for the win. Todd Field started with heartfelt cynicism about awards and staying power in this "noisy world" but we loved his story about this nonetheless, since it is a concern we share. The streaming world we live in is not built for endurance but for the right now and the churn.
Maggie Gyllenhaal presented the award saying "It's really fucking hard to write a script".
LEAD PERFORMANCE
- Cate Blanchett, TÁR
- ★ Danielle Deadwyler, Till
- Dale Dickey, A Love Song
- Colin Farrell, After Yang
- Brendan Fraser, The Whale
- Paul Mescal, Aftersun
- Thandiwe Newton, Gods' Country
- Aubrey Plaza, Emily the Criminal
- Taylor Russell, Bones and All
- Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Danielle Deadwyler wasn't able to attend the ceremony so her director gave the speech.
SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE
- Jessie Buckley, Women Talking
- Rául Castillo, The Inspection
- Hong Chau, The Whale
- Brian Tyree Henry, Causeway
- Nina Hoss, TÁR
- Noemie Merlant, TÁR
- ★ Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All At Once
- Mark Rylance, Bones and All
- Gabrielle Union, The Inspection
- Ben Whishaw, Women Talking
Wow this is incredible. All I was hoping for last year was just a job. And just when I think it can't get any better, it does.
He's so happy and the love that this cast and crew emanate and have received back this year has been beautiful to watch. Will the Academy love Ke Huy Quan as much as the media has for his comeback performance?
BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMER
- Anna Cobb, We're All Going to the World's Fair
- Frankie Corio, Aftersun
- Anna Diop, Nanny
- ★ Gracija Filipovic, Murina
- Kali Reis, Catch the Fair One
Antoneta, who is the director of Murina. She is the reason why I'm up here today. She taught me everything I know about the movies and art and life.
Surprise win here. Filipovic said that when she was young she dreamed of coming to New York one day while wandering around a theater in Croatia. It's a reminder to dream big.

In addition to those award categories there are also several tributes including one to Michelle Williams.
Before I ever wanted to be an actor I wanted to be a New Yorker. Which isn't technically a profession... but it kinda is.

Well Done to Quan,I think he'll fight it out with Gleeson for the Oscar.
I don't see what narrative their is for Blanchett's 3rd,we know Oscar loves a narrative, apart from her being great in the movie but with a very odd cold off putting character.
The other contenders have better narratives for the win
Yeoh Asian cinema legend, endearing role, one of the BP frontrunners, fabulous in the movie
Williams due status, playing a sort of real person,Spielberg glow,BP frontrunner status
Robbie overdue, correct age for BA love, film could be BP nominee,Brad Pitt glow,Chazelle good with actors.
Deadwyler passionate fans, movie all about her,Halle Berry's Oscar record has to be broken soon, real person.
What's Francisco Macdonald's narrative to win her third? Lmao
By the way, Cate's narrative could be that as the second greatest living actress, she is overdue for her third. Oscar
I already hate this season. Can we discuss The White Lotus instead?
