Best Supporting Actor - "How'd he get nominated?"

The Best Supporting Actor Chart now contains a ton more information and a poll which you can vote on daily. If you fused all these men into one Oscar-Nominee they'd be a 6' tall 49 year-old veteran character actor with 41 films under their belt and experiencing their first career nomination thanks to the help of a female director. Incredibly the majority of this acting lineup was directed by a woman -- an Oscar first...
As we mentioned on the podcast we think the race for the win is between Kodi Smit-McPhee who has the largest role and the most acclaimed performance in the frontrunning film The Power of the Dog and Troy Kotsur who has a great "narrative" and is in the emotionally grabby sleeper hit CODA. And, as per usual in these charts, we love a half serious / half silly thought experiment so we're speculating how each one of them got nominated.
Here's a taste. How did J.K. Simmons get nominated?
Lucille: I thought you and Desi had a deal that you don't drink at work.

57% Coattails. They only watched __ of their screeners and while voting for Nicole & Javier...
15% Clip / Performance. He could do this in his sleep but that great bar-advice scene surely sealed it.
12% His competition was in either in a) films they didnt watch b) from considerably less famous actors or c) big stars in tiny roles
8% Role (Oscar loves actors playing actors) and I Love Lucy Nostalgia.
5% We blame the Critics Choice nomination for getting this particular party started
2% Whiplash nostalgia

As voters learn of Smit-McPhee’s heartbreaking illness that has resulted in chronic pain and the loss of vision in one eye, I suspect the admiration of this gifted actor will only grow.
After months on Netflix, POWER OF THE DOG actually opened in a theater where I live on Friday, so I went to see it again up on the big screen. I was even more impressed with a second viewing and with Smit-McPhee's performance.
My vote goes to McPhee but have a feeling Coda's Kotsur will eventually win.
I wasn't impressed with the 3 nominated actors from BTR but glad he kept out Leto
Plemmons was more than solid and has been great for a few years now and TPOTD is winning BP.
Hinds is fine and warm as the Grandfather but I prefered Dornan.
Despite not being in love with Kotsur's or Hinds's performances, I'm thrilled for them to get their first noms.
Despite not loving Simmons, really, ever, I think it's fun that he bumped out the dreaded Leto.
Which leaves the Dogboys, who I adore, and the coolness of suddenly always getting double nominees in this category after a 25 year drought
So - category is 40% quality, 100% satisfying.
Kodi's performance gets better with each re-watch (same with Plemmons). Still heartbroken for Faist even if it was a long shot, Simmons never needed this nom. The Film Bitch lineup is so much better :)

so curious if he'd have placed in your top 5 or just as a finalist/semi-finalist. I really like the performance but your chosen 5 are better.
And I guess, pour one out for how relatively close we got to a lineup made up entirely of People-caliber Sexiest Men AliveTM: Affleck, Cooper, Dornan, Bernthal,and, I don't know, David Alvarez or something.

Either Garfield in Tammy Faye or the one whose snub everyone is rejoicing.
"Power of the Dog" is a slow burn of a movie. But then Kodi shows up and lights everything on fire. Nobody in this category comes close to doing what he does. The reason the movie got so many nominations is largely due to his presence. Take him out of it, and you simply have a gorgeous, well-acted film with some good scenes.
Still want to see J.K. Simmons play Spider-Man just once as he did look good in the Spider-Man suit in that deleted scene from the 2nd film. They never should've cut that scene out. That was just too goddamn hilarious.
Super boring category, AGAIN.
Team Plemmons here. The only real supporting actor in Power of the Dog.
