Apologies for the Momentary Lull.

Dear readers, We apologize for the lack of the normal volume of writing/updates. There have been significant unavoidable struggles off site. Because life is life, these are naturally paired with other time-consuming things that are entirely unrelated like moving apartments in a couple of weeks plus festivals (NYFF screenings begin today and then Middleburg). While we collect ourselves check out the updated Oscar charts for Picture, Director,  Actress, Actor, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, International FilmScreenplays, Visuals, Sound if you haven't yet. More soon.

Also please consider following on Instagram and subscribing to the new substack which I'll be using to experiment a bit or in case we go dark or decide to switch hosting platforms or whatnot.

Just want to acknowledge the death of Louise Fletcher. She may be a one-hit wonder, but her one hit has guaranteed her immortality. Justifiably.

And along with her Best Actress Oscar, she deserves the Oscar for Best Acceptance Speech of all time. Only competition: Peter Finch's widow.

Obviously it’s way too early to start predicting winners, but I have to think Sarah Polley has an advantage in the Best Director category just in that if Women Talking does end up being a frontrunner, the opportunity to have a third consecutive year with a female Best Director winner could be a big story.

Also just some trivia, IF Michelle Williams can win Best Actress, I believe that would make Spielberg only the fourth (unless I’m forgetting someone?) director to direct a winning performance in each of the four acting categories.

Edwin -- love that trivia! Good point about Polley, too, in that would they really feel the need to give Spielberg a third Directing Oscar... even if they love The Fabelmans.

Amy -- yes Fletcher's speech is one of the history books. I am less thrilled about the win though given her competition (mostly Adjani and Kane who were both brilliant that same year)

Nat you updated the charts thank goodness,I don't feel the seasons begun until those are done

Here's my predictions

Actor Butler,Fraser,Farrell,Nighy and Tom Cruise which is a real wildcard or Jackman

Actress Williams,Robbie,Ackie,Blanchett and either Yeoh or Colman

S Actor Whishaw,Hirsch,Dano,Gleeson and either Quan or Hopkins

S Actress Curtis,Foy,Buckley,Hoss and either Smart or Condon

Isn't like the whole point of The Fabelmans to get him that third?

September 26, 2022 | Registered CommenterPeggy Sue

@Edwin

Four directors have directed a winner in all four categories.

William Wyler (at least two wins in each category)
Elia Kazan
Martin Scorsese
Hal Ashby

Active directors with three category wins:

Woody Allen (missing Actor)
Spielberg (missing Actress)
Clint Eastwood (missing Supporting Actress)
David O. Russell (missing Actor)
James L. Brooks (missing Supporting Actor)
Robert Benton (missing Supporting Actor)

No one else has more than two

I also love Adjani and kane, but Nurse ratched is so iconic and Fletcher is so fierce/chilling that I can not say that her win was undeserved. Without her commitment and restraint the movie would not work at all. And I have to admit that Nurse ratched is the only character to ever cause me a nightmare. I still remember waking up sobing after being sent to electroshock by her in my nightmare!

@Amy Camus

I give up. Who won Best Actress in a Fred Zinnemann-directed film?

September 26, 2022 | Registered CommenterFinbar McBride

oh shit. I just realized Jane Fonda didn't win for Julia. My bad

Jonathan Demme also belongs to the 3-winners club (missing Supporting Actor)

September 26, 2022 | Registered CommenterAmy Camus
