First & Last 040
Can you guess the movie from its first and last shot? The answer is after the jump when you scroll down...
If you were hallucinating giant nightmare rabbits, you've got the right movie. It's Donnie Darko (2001). That was such a cult point of conversation back in the day but I haven't heard anyone talk about it in ages. You? Do you remember the first time you saw it? Did you remember that Drew Barrymore, of all people, is in it?
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
I feel you, Drew. Donnie Darko is currently streaming on Criterion Channel

This is one of the few first / last I've ever guessed.
As a kid, Drew was my favorite actress so when I was at Blockbuster some weekend and saw her face on the cover of this movie, I decided to check it out and it became a fav of mine. If I remember correctly, she had the small role to help fund the movie or something.
By high school, I would frequently pop my Donnie Darko DVD in and have it playing in my room for no reason. It was weirdly comforting cuz it's so calm but dark -- it's a disassociated energy that perfectly encapsulated my feelings as a teenager tbh.
I was Donnie Darko for halloween in 2020 (the skeleton shirt and gray hoodie). Anyway, I guess I'll have to watch it again for the first time in ages.
I think I first saw it on cable in late 2002/early 2003 or something. It was unlike anything as I ended up buying a used DVD copy of the film later that year. It was a film that I really enjoyed though it's a shame that Richard Kelly has only made one film in his entire career that is worth noting. Southland Tales sucked and The Box was mid. I now have a new copy Donnie Darko on Blu-Ray.
One of the greatest movies ever created. Knew it easily from the closing shot. Of all the movies in my "greatest of all time" list, it is the only one where the director has failed to live up to their promise.
That last shot really makes it easy. A truly haunting and special film -- a shame Kelly could never match it.
See also: "Under the Silver Lake" for something in this same vein (although not nearly as good).
Also, great soundtrack!
Count me in among the angsty teenagers who loved this movie. Everything Philip H said.
This post inspired me to watch Donnie Darko last night. Hadn't seen it in years. Maybe a decade at this point? Idk. So glad I did. What a movie. Everything I said up there ^ stands true.
Just told a friend this eve that I watched and she had the same reaction Lucky had, so yeah... Donnie Darko is that bitch. <3
I rented this movie about 15 years ago via Netflix DVD's (remember they would mail them to you?). I watched it, loved it and rewatched it a second time immediately. I rewatched it about a year ago and it still holds up. And yes, a great soundtrack, Tears For Fears forever.
"Donnie Darko". ❤️
A little gem, an underrrated movie.
