Is "Elvis" going to win the Makeup and Hair Oscar?

by Nathaniel R

Austin & Elvis. Image via YouTube comparison

The Makeup and Hair Stylist Guild (MUAHS) gives out prizes in multiple categories and this weekend at their ceremony three Oscar-nominated films in the Makeup category emerged as winners: Black Panther Wakanda Forever, The Whale, and Elvis.

Only one of them can win at the Oscars. So which might it be? The last five Oscar winners  Darkest Hour, Vice, Bombshell, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and The Eyes of Tammy Faye only have have one thing in common: they all featured at least one famous actor, sometimes multiple famous actors, remade to look like another famous person via prosthetics. This bodes well for Elvis but it's not over till it's over and it has at least one formidable competitor, probably two. The MUAHS awards ceremony and complete list of winners is after the jump...

BEST PERIOD AND/OR CHARACTER MAKE-UP

  • Amsterdam (Nana Fischer, Miho Suzuki, Jason Collins)
  • Babylon (Heba Thorisdottir, Shaunna Bren Chavez, Jean Black, Mandy Artusato)
  • Blonde (Tina Roesler Kerwin, Elena Arroy, Cassie Lyons)
  • ★ Elvis (Shane Thomas, Angela Conte)
  • Till (Denise Tunnell, Janice Tunnell, Ashley Langston)

Elvis was the only one of these that landed the parallel Oscar nomination

BEST SPECIAL EFFECTS MAKE-UP

  • The Batman (Michael Marino, Mike Fontaine, Yoichi Art Sakamoto, Göran Lundström)
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Joel Harlow, Kim Felix
  • Elvis (Mark Coulier & Jason Baird)
  • Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical (Barrie Gower, Emma Faulkes, Chloe Muton-Phillips)
  • ★ The Whale (Adrien Morot, Kathy Tse, Chris Gallaher)

This is the full Oscar lineup IF ou kick out Matilda and replace it with All Quiet on the Western Front. In a head-to-head battle, Elvis lost to The Whale. We can't count out Oscar's love of fatsuits (though Elvis has two of those, too!) so The Whale could prevail on March 12th.

BEST CONTEMPORARY HAIRSTYLING

  • The Batman (Zoe Tahir, Melissa Van Tongeran, Paula Price, Andrea Lance Jones)
  • ★ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Camille Friend, Evelyn Feliciano, Marva Stokes, Victor Paz)
  • Everything Everywhere All At Once (Anissa E. Salazar, Meghan Heaney, Miki Caporusso)
  • Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Jeremy Woodhead, Tracey Smith, Leslie D. Bennett)
  • The Menu (Adruitha Lee, Monique Hyman, Kate Loftis, Barbara Sanders)

We can probably assume The Batman won't win the Oscar given that it lost to other Oscar nominees in both of its MUAHS categories. Could Wakanda Forever take the Oscar? It's a possibility given the memorable work on Namor and the glamour work on Queen Ramonda. But we don't think it will given the lotsa prosthetics appeal of its competition.

BEST PERIOD HAIR STYLING AND/OR CHARACTER HAIR STYLING

  • Amsterdam (Adruitha Lee, Lori McCoy-Bell, Cassandra L. Russek, Yvette Shelton)
  • Babylon (Jaime Leigh McIntosh, Ahou Mofid, Aubrey Marie)
  • Blonde (Jaime Leigh McIntosh, Lynnae Duley, Ahou Mofid, Robert Pickens)
  • ★ Elvis (Shane Thomas, Louise Coulston)
  • The Woman King (Louisa Anthony, Jamika Wilson, Plaxedes Kelias, Charity Gwakuka)

Same lineup as Period Makeup -- minus Till plus The Woman King -- but Elvis wins again.

You left out the contemporary makeup category where EEAAO won.

Elvis would be a well-deserved winner in my opinion but Amsterdam should have been among the nominees.

I don't understand why AQOTWF was singled out (on BAFTA as well), was it really just the mud and one damaged eye? How does it compare to Black Panther, Elvis and the fatsuits?

When it comes to hair, she's an expert we become what we behold. Too ideal for hairstyles according to each outfit, body shape and face of each subject.

I am starting to come round to the notion Butler is winning Best Actor and will win best makeup/hair to go with it.

TERRIFIER 2 was robbed.

I'm not a MUAHS expert but I love the nomination for All Quiet on the Western Front. I dug the color palette for that movie overall—the very cool blues, light browns and warm reds/oranges. To me the caked-on mud from the "crater" scene was beautiful and sticks with me. It felt like a slightly surreal and artsy make-up choice that I’d never seen before.
