First & Last 016

Can you guess the movie from its first and last image?

The answer is after the jump once you scroll down...

The answer is River of No Return (1954) which sounds like a thriller but it actually a romantic western. The film stars Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe.

Marilyn had exploded in fame the previous two years with a string of major leading roles (Don't Bother to Knock, Niagara, How to Marry a Millionaire, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) after a couple of years of small but head-turning parts. Last month Cláudio investigated Criterion Channel's Marilyn collection to name her top ten roles and this film made the list despite Marilyn herself hating the picture!

(I confess to have never seen this particular film -- have you? -- though I am otherwise well-versed in Marilyn.)

River of No Return is the type of flick that should be diverting on a quiet afternoon with a glass of wine. It’s not.

The great cinematographer Joseph LaShelle provides terrific CinemaScope visuals from an on location shoot in the Canadian Rockies. Everything else is substandard.
