2023 Team Experience Awards - NOMINEES

From the team...

Poor Things earned 12 nominations from the team, including Picture, Director, Actress and two Supporting Actor citations.

Poor Things led the nominations for the Team Experience Awards for the 2023 awards season. Yorgos Lanthimos' film earned 12 nominations, the most of any film this year. Despite the team falling for a movie loved by the Oscars, they were not afraid to deviate from the expected nominees. Only six out of ten Best Picture nominees overlapped with Oscars, while Lanthimos is the only director honored by the Film Experience team and the Oscars with a nomination. The selections for these nominees were determined through a collective voting process involving all the writers at The Film Experience, with the exception of Nathaniel, who will announce his personal Film Bitch Awards separately. Be sure to visit The Film Experience on Sunday, March 2nd when the winners will be announced.

FUN FACTS & FIGURES

  • The Best Picture category featured 41 movies mentioned on at least one writer’s top 10 list.
  • Barbie earned the second highest number of nominations (9), but coincidentally did not make it into Best Picture. Still, Greta Gerwig made it into Best Director and Margot Robbie earned a Best Actress nomination, unlike at the Oscars.
  • On the other hand, Alcarrás made it into Best Picture with no other nominations in any other categories.
  • The team cited 39 films across 20 categories, which is just one more than the Oscars did this year (38).
  • The biggest disagreement between the Oscars and the Film Experience Team was in regards to Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan’s film led the Oscars with 13 nominations, while it only received 4 nominations from Team Experience.
  • Between Best Animated Feature and Best Documentary Feature, only one film earned additional nominations outside of that category. That film was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was also nominated for Best Visual Effects.

Justine Triet was nominated for an Oscar as well as Yorgos - so they both were nominated here and at the Oscars FYI

February 26, 2024 | Registered CommenterTony L

No Oppenheimer or Nolan was a ????? beginning.

But thrilled to see several of these noms, including Chau, Pike, Machado-Graner, Melton, Robbie, Priscilla for Costumes, Saltburn for Cinematography, and Asteroid City for Production Design.

February 26, 2024 | Registered CommenterFrank Zappa

Frank Zappa - understood.

MrRipley79 - great nominations and FANTASTIC winners!!

February 26, 2024 | Registered CommenterTony L

I didn’t even like Oppenheimer but I can see why it was nominated and is winning - bit of a snub lol.

Supporting lineups are joyous though. God I wish Pike had got in.

February 26, 2024 | Registered Commenterlemonzestysour1

Not even you queers nominate Patti LuPone? SMDH.

February 26, 2024 | Registered CommenterWae Mest

Still no love for Joe Hisaishi for Team Experience. Sad.

February 26, 2024 | Registered Commenterajnrules

ajnrules -- I voted for him! Justice for Joe!!!

February 26, 2024 | Registered CommenterCláudio Alves

Generally great nominations all around (Teo Yoo! Rachel McAdams! Milo Machado-Graner! "Margaret" in costumes! "Zone" in score! "Priscilla" in makeup!)

But... I can't believe The Film Experience of all places is participating in the Julianne Moore snubbery!! Her best performance in years (decades?) and for my money, one of the best, most layered, considered, and surprising performances of the year -- full stop.

February 26, 2024 | Registered CommenterMrBaxter

@MrBaxter-same. What was Julianne in that movie? I play it risky and I state that is the best performance of her career.

February 27, 2024 | Registered CommenterGallavich

MrBaxter and Gallavich, FWIW, as a TFE writer, Julianne was my number one vote. Agreed that it's one of her all-time greatest performances and it's heads and shoulders above anybody who was in the Supporting Actress conversation all season. Degree of difficulty was out of control, and she slays it.

February 28, 2024 | Registered CommenterEricB

Humm... it's complicated!

What is "Alcarrás"?
Where's Original Song nominees?
How is possible "Oppenheimer" out?
Why, why, why...?

Fortunately, this is just a joke... Maybe a bad joke...

February 28, 2024 | Registered CommenterFabio Dantas Flappers

Fabio Dantas Flappers -- It's not a joke, simply a group of people with different tastes.

Also, ALCARRÀS won the Gold Bear at Berlinale 2022 and was chosen to represent Spain at last season's Oscars. It's not especially obscure.

EricB -- I also voted for Moore, but in lead. I wonder if there was an issue of vote splitting between the two possible categorizations.

February 28, 2024 | Registered CommenterCláudio Alves

It's very strange that you include Alcarrás for best picture (which compited in 2022 and was out of the shorlists for best international picture) and then it does not appear for non englih speaking movie. It is a boring psedo-documentary that we dont know how it won the golden bear in Berlin.

It was a mistake for Spain to send this movie for the Oscars instead the great Goya-Winner As Bestas /The Beasts, released in the US cinemas in 2023. I wonder if someone has watched this great movie.

February 28, 2024 | Registered Commentertrados

La Pike & La Portman: La la la I love you.

February 28, 2024 | Registered CommenterAntônio

@trados: ALCARRÀS was released in the US in January 2023, so for the purposes of this awards, yes it qualifies for this year so it's not strange that it's here.

I voted for the film in my top 10, and clearly, I was not the only one - as evidenced by its Picture nom here - so you're clearly barking on the wrong tree here.

February 28, 2024 | Registered CommenterJuan Carlos Ojano

@Fabio Dantas Flappers:

OPPENHEIMER is out because not enough people voted for it.

How dare we TFE writers have film tastes divergent from the awards season consensus and have our own opinions, right?

Yeah, this is not a joke. This is real life.

February 28, 2024 | Registered CommenterJuan Carlos Ojano

The funny thing about Oppenheimer is that it's not even going to get a Split Decision post because there wasn't strong enough disagreement about it among the team. Don't know whether that means folks liked it but not enough, or disliked it but not enough. FWIW, it was on my own best picture ballot.

As usual, I applaud my fellow TFErs' independent thinking, even where it departed from my own. And hey, my Actress ballot was a 5-for-5 match! I feel like an honorary Actressexual. :)

February 28, 2024 | Registered CommenterLynn Lee

Mr. Alves and Mr. Ojano,

Of course, it's your taste, your choices and your responsibilities.
Fortunately you don't vote for real awards.
